It's been years since I played the original POP. It's a game I couldn't finish as a kid, but thanks to Gameloft's friendly redesign, I've raced through it four times now. The seeds of Ubisoft's recent Prince trilogy on Xbox can be found here -- even the dark alter-ego of the Prince plays a role. Prince of Persia Classic is certainly short, but it's oh so sweet. This is one of the best games released on XBLA to date and the template all future enhanced classic games should follow. If it weren't for the brevity of the experience, POP Classic would be, well, an instant classic. Still, if you can accept that you won't get more than a couple hours enjoyment from the $10 download, do yourself a favor and check out Prince of Persia Classic. It's one of the elite among Xbox Live Arcade games.

So it's more, more and more. That's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, all summed up. It's a true sequel to an established hit game – taking the characters, gameplay and overall feel of the original and enhancing each one. Sonic 2 became even more of a hit than its predecessor, probably thanks to word of mouth praising the first game and converted fans wanting to get in on the ground floor once the sequel hit. And because this one was such a big seller in its original release, it's since been included in a wealth of retro re-releases and classics compilations. This Virtual Console version is an easy thumbs-up, as the game itself is spectacular. But check to make sure you don't already own this same game in five other ways first – because, if so, you may want to use those 800 Wii Points for another purpose.

Gripshift è, insomma, un gioco piacevole se si considera la ridotta spesa dell'acquisto. Un buon comparto audiovideo, un gran numero di modalità di gioco, tanti tracciati ed extra da sbloccare sono le carte più alte in mano a questo riuscito porting. Sicuramente non è esente da difetti: la modalità Sfida dopo un po' di ore di gioco mostra i suoi limiti dettati, più che altro, dalla non eccessiva varietà di puzzle da risolvere; inoltre il buffo comportamento della nostra vettura in certi casi risulta fin troppo grottesco e difficilmente prevedibile, con conseguenti incidenti e fuori pista a tratti frustranti. Fortunatamente gli stages sono molto brevi ed invogliano il giocatore a ripeterne uno che in precedenza ci ha bloccato o anche solo per migliorare il nostro record. Tomb Raider Anniversary merita l’attenzione di molti giocatori. Rivisitando una tappa fondamentale (nel bene e nel male) del videogioco alla luce delle nuove conquiste tecniche, potrebbe aprire la strada per un “risorgimento” ludico, in cui le produzioni siano finalmente libere dalle spinte commerciali della massa. Perché Anniversary, in fondo, ha anche il compito di ricordare che il videogioco è un prodotto per sognatori. Estraneo alle logiche che pure avevano caratterizzato il suo immediato predecessore (Legend), l’ultimo Tomb Raider riporta in auge il gioco di pura esplorazione, che si fa vanto di strutture architettoniche complesse piuttosto che di un ritmo sostenuto da impianti d’azione (ed in questo ci ricorda anche il primo Principe di Persia, che poi ha incautamente venduto l’anima ad uno Spirito Guerriero). Di fronte a qualche debolezza tecnica, Anniversary offre ambienti immersi in un immaginario piuttosto ricco, riportando alla luce qualche piccolo prodigio locazionale che sembrava esser stato dimenticato. Fautore di una concezione dell’Avventura ancora incontaminata, il prodotto Crystal Dynamics stupisce ed ammalia. E nonostante il sistema di gioco sia leggermente abusato, la qualità delle strutture architettoniche lo proietta in un contesto increbilmente complesso e profondo, l'unico ed il solo in cui esso riscopre una nuova dimensione, mai avuta prima d'ora.

DIRT è un esperienza di gioco completa, curata ed appagante, la longevità dovrebbe attestarsi su livelli notevoli, anche solo per l'ampiezza e varietà della modalità di gioco offline. Aldilà delle considerazioni sulle scelte artistiche, su colori, contrasto e luminosità (e quindi oltre i gusti personali), DIRT gode generalmente di un comparto visivo di alta qualità, con elementi in quantità e qualità mai visti prima in un gioco di rally, con piste e situazioni di gioco che soddisferanno quasi tutti i giocatori. Tuttavia Neon, il nuovo motore grafico 3D di Codemasters, pur sfruttando a dovere le caratteristiche degli schermi ad alta definizione e le potenzialità delle nuove console, nel caso della versione Xbox360 paga il prezzo della mancanza del V-sync e l'eliminazione del Motion Blur (presente invece nella versione PC), una carenza che abbassa parzialmente la qualità finale. Il feeling di guida è la questione più spinosa: se siete amanti delle simulazioni DIRT vi farà storcere il naso, in quanto contravviene parzialmente alla "spirito guida" della serie, usualmente votata al realismo ma in questo capitolo più aperta a contaminazioni Arcade. Chi tuttavia riuscirà ad accettare il compromesso tra un'esperienza di guida leggermente semplificata ma comunque impegnativa e divertente troverà un prodotto molto interessante.

Scarface: The World is Yours was an impressive game on previous consoles, and it’s just as entertaining and immersive on Wii as ever before. IR control gives the game a more streamlined feel, and Wii owners that fit in the hardcore crowd will absolutely eat this one up, as it’s currently one of the deepest and most entertaining experiences on the system. And while the package is essentially GTA: Vice City with the Scarface license coated over it, we’ve actually had more fun exploring Miami than Vice City, as there’s more to do, better vehicle, weapon, and asset management, and nearly every hotspot from the movie is created brick for brick. When you explore Montana’s mansion, you’re in the mansion from the movie. When you head over to the beach-side club, the bartender recognizes you from the beginning of the first movie (the oh-so-famous “lizard tongue” scene, to be exact). Everything in Scarface fits with the movie, and while it suffers from the same open-world issues as GTA and the like – characters and items fade in, AI isn’t always the sharpest, and the world has a somewhat “unpolished” look to it – the control, immersion, and overall soul of the game is there. Scarface is a deep, engaging, mature title on Wii, and widely recommended to anyone who can handle its vulgar nature. Vice City, eat your heart out.

Trioncube est l'exemple même du puzzle-game au concept inabouti. Réellement amusant dans son principe mais dépourvu de toute difficulté, ce Tetris-like ne vous occupera qu'une heure ou deux avant d'avouer ses limites. Dommage aussi que les concepteurs n'aient pas cherché à utiliser les possibilités tactiles de la console, ni à varier davantage les modes de jeu proposés.

Les amoureux de réflexion seront ravis de découvrir The Adventures of Lolo, un jeu séduisant associé à la clarté d’un gameplay intelligent. Bien des éléments auraient pu transformer ce titre en référence dans sa catégorie de jeu. On espère bien revoir notre petit ami bleu pointer un jour le bout de son nez et remettre en marche certaines parties de notre cerveau, poussiéreuses et trop souvent oubliées. En effet, si vous voulez venir en aide à Lolo, la dextérité de vos doigts ne lui sera d’aucun secours.

Peut-être parce que la série n'est pas encore très présente sur le support, Tony Hawk's Project 8 s'en tire bien mieux sur PSP que sur PS2. Très complet avec un solide multijoueur ainsi qu'un large panel de niveaux, l'UMD ravira les fans de la discipline qui constateront que le plaisir de rider est bien présent.
