Despite their seemingly miserable setting, both Metro games are in fact fun, diverse shooter-adventures, and the remastered 2033 does a good job of smoothing down the original's rougher edges at the expense of some of its brutal personality. Getting both in a single, enhanced package is a great way to discover (or rediscover) the Moscow Metro's unconventional charms.

This is the third time I've reviewed some version of Diablo 3, and each time I've been met by a better, more refined experience. Ultimate Evil Edition collects the entirety of that experience in a slick new wrapper, giving console owners a complete, and uncompromised version of Diablo 3.

Risen 3 has elements that are enjoyable in short spurts; exploring islands, engaging in swordplay, and the brief moments of naval combat can be fun. All of that is undermined, however, by elements that make the campaign drag. The plot never ramps up, the characters barely change, and the choice to make most NPCs a shopkeep and/or teacher makes equipping and learning new skills a mess, all of which keep Risen 3 from - ahem - rising to modern RPG expectations.

Sacred 3 is a beautifully detailed, enjoyably shallow experience that's better with friends. Sacred 2 fans hoping for a real action-RPG likely won't be pleased, but as a simple, straightforward slash-'em-up, this stands ably enough on its own.

Gods Will Be Watching can stand with other contemporary adventure games as a revitalization of the genre. By utilizing time and resource management, inside claustrophobic and violent situations, it builds tension and instills panic like very few games. It’s a demonstration that even with the simplest of interfaces and old-fashioned graphics, new combinations of storytelling with gameplay are possible.

Abyss Odyssey has everything it needs to be a great Roguelike, except the most important - a reason to keep coming back. While it lasts, it’s a gorgeous journey with great ideas and atmosphere, and in time, it may evolve into something with more longevity. For now though, just a few short hours are enough to see it, appreciate it, and never need to play it again.

One Piece Unlimited World Red offers simple but refined brawler play, and boasts attractive anime-styled scenery throughout, though it still eventually runs out of tricks to conceal the fact that it’s a repetitive beat-em-up. The only thing close to a puzzle to be found is the tricky goals to be met in tougher side-quests, and those still require the same combat and exploration skills. But with a mix of varied characters, as well as three difficulty options and a slew of side-missions and Battle Coliseum challenges, Unlimited World Red is not short on ways to extend your play.

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2015 is attractive in that it's the first of the Duels games to allow extensive freedom to create custom decks, but it stifles that potential under cumbersome menus, grindy gameplay, and near-compulsory microtransactions. It's the most drab and featureless of the Duels games, and a low mark for a series that started out with such promise.

I was excited about Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition. In fact, I volunteered to review it, because I’d heard so many good things about it from friends, and I admire its intriguing look and mysterious alien ambiance. And yet it took me about five minutes to realize that Another World is best left in their fond memories. I honestly couldn't fathom recommending Another World to anyone. I could rattle off a hundred platformers with better controls off the top of my head -- puzzle-oriented or otherwise -- that you should play before you subject yourself to these terrible controls and uninspired platforming puzzles.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn is a fast and fun brawler with enough loot-crafting and variety between modes to keep things from getting too stale too quick. Played in short bursts, it’s an amusing arcade-style distraction incorporating a long-term reward system that keeps me coming back.

As a Civilization fan with thousands of hours played in the series, it’s difficult for me to get into the simplified design of Civilization Revolution 2. That doesn’t make it a bad game – it offers good controls and variety in leaders, maps, and scenarios, and can easily keep the momentum going for several hours of grand strategy. But with some annoying busywork and annoying AI, it lacks the depth and interesting challenges that give its big siblings their staying power. It’s okay, but not in the same league as the games that made this series famous.
