FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is one of this or any other console generation's better ports, though it is not without its issues. Not being able to conduct races on local machines is a glaring omission, and load times can certainly cut down on Party Mode's fun factor. Still, Ultimate Carnage is a solid game, and its Stunt Mode alone can be played for endless hours without a trace of boredom seeping in. Those who own the original might want to consider dropping US$50 on a title already in their collection, but those looking for a significant upgrade or an introduction to FlatOut's carnage need not look further.

Stadium-style Pokemon games have been around since 2000 on N64. We’ve watched the franchise become a worldwide phenomenon and seen its evolvution over four portable systems and three consoles. For whatever reason, however, Pokemon Battle Revolution takes a step back, actually removing content from older attempts, making the true "Stadium" experience a one-trick pony. Gone are the multiplayer mini-games, the ability to play the portable game on the big screen, the endless extra features, and overall "hub" feel of the console Pokemon experience. Pokemon Battle Revolution is neither a full-fledged RPG on Wii nor a fully-realized stadium effort, as the core of the game has been cut down to online or offline battles. The single player mode is a joke, there’s a huge lack of true customization or depth, and the multiplayer mode – while certainly appealing to core gamers – offers very little beyond what DS had. You'll pay $50 for a stripped down seven-year-old design that offers worldwide random battles in place of a full-fledged RPG, voice chat, or any actual depth found in the handheld versions. For less money you can get well over 60 hours of gameplay on DS, and far more multiplayer (both local and online) anywhere you go. Pokemon Battle Revolution is a $50 loyalty tax for Wii Pokemon fans, and was far better seven years ago on Nintendo 64.

The label "kid's game" is usually a license for a publisher to make a poor product and shove it out the door. However, Ratatouille is for the most part a well-made, but basic platformer that is usually fun despite its lack or originality. I don't think younger players will mind that the majority of the gameplay types included in the project have been done before or that Ratatouille doesn't floor anybody with its innovative usage of the Wii remote. They will undoubtedly enjoy this game because it capitalizes on the license, it's easily picked up and mastered and because it offers a single-player mode that flows along, not to mention a selection of multiplayer mini-games to back it up. Still, these are issues and we can't ignore them completely simply because a portion of the audience will.

Though a took a while for it to get to the PlayStation 3, Rainbow Six: Vegas is a great shooter and should be picked up by anyone who's even remotely into tactical shooters. The series' strength has always been its online play, but Vegas manages to bring an engaging single-player experience to the table as well. With a total of 20 multiplayer maps, the ability to play through the whole game cooperatively online, terrorist hunt and the single-player missions, there's a whole lot to this package and it shouldn't be passed up.

There might not be a Season or Franchise mode, but the arcade style of The Bigs is an extremely fun way to play a quick game or two of baseball. Extremely accessible and engaging, The Bigs captures the excitement of the big time plays that dominate baseball highlights perfectly. The games are quick to get into and complete, and the action is fast and enjoyable. Plus, the ability to take your own rookie from his first swing to the World Series is a lot of fun. If you're a baseball fan, you really should check out The Bigs.

There’s no denying that SBK-07 is a competent superbike simulation – it’s got the licensed teams and tracks and Championship mode is bursting with depth. However, the controls just are twitchy or responsive enough, plus there’s no great sense of speed as you zip around the tracks. Sure, you can do wheelies and there are plenty of options for Superbike fans to get their teeth stuck into – such as bike customisation and all the engine tinkering – but overall SBK-07 is a racing game that never shifts out of third gear.

The Bigs isn’t a bad experience on Wii. In fact, it’s exactly as we’ve rated it: “Decent.” There are a few serious issues within the design, such as a laggy swing recognition and some wonky, forced fielding motion controls, but it’s still a respectable MLB experience for Wii gamers, and a solid first effort from 2K Sports on Nintendo’s new system. There’s definitely enough of a true MLB feel in the game to attract baseball fans, and as being part of that target audience a few of us in IGN LA have had fun ripping through games and powering up players. The fact still remains, however, that The Bigs has issues, and while those issues can certainly be overlooked by sports junkies or arcade addict MLB fans, they’re still there. The Bigs is generally a fun experience, but is extremely shallow. Add in the lack of online (something available in the other versions of the games) and you’ll really start to feel just how short-lived the “lasting appeal” turns out to be. The game can be fun, but the entertainment value may wear off by this year’s All Star Game, and that’s not a ton of bang for your buck. Whether you’re a sports nut or not, we suggest a rental before purchase, as The Bigs is very hit and miss.

You¿ll want to love this game, you really will, but you won¿t be able to. It¿s evident that a lot of passion went into its creation, but the game completely ignores the rules that every successful platformer since Mario has adhered to. The collision detection in Death Jr. is atrocious, the move set and puzzling unnecessarily complicated and the controls consistently unresponsive. The visuals are engaging, but they¿re not enough to save this unplayable mess. Death Jr. has shaped up to be an adequate little series on the PSP, but on DS he¿s (here it comes) dead on arrival.

In the case of The Sims 2: Pets, it really feels like this is a solid game that won’t get its moment in even the most remote spotlight. Its predecessors came out on last-gen systems last fall, and while the game is solid Sims action, it’s going to be outshined by My Sims; a Wii-exclusive, stylistic approach to the original design. If you’re a fan of The Sims, give this one a rental, or pick it up if you’re Sims-obsessed. The IR works great, the decent look and feel of the game is still there, and there are still dozens upon dozens of hours of play in Sims, pet, and overall world customization. The actual “pets” portion of the game is really more of an add-on to the basic Sims structure, but couple that with the other elements of the franchise and you’ve got a game that’s deep, free-form, and about as “go at your own pace” as possible. Just know there’s a stronger, Wii-specific Sims product on the way in the next few months. Most players should just wait for that.

Contra III: The Alien Wars and Gunstar Heroes both took up early residence on the Virtual Console, all but rendering other genre challengers from the same era to be dead on arrival. The stronger recommendation remains for those two established titles, but if you're a lone run and gun fan looking for a game you missed out on years ago, Bloody Wolf may be worth some consideration. Just don't expect any bells, whistles, or unique gameplay ideas.

Even without the bugs and hiccups we experienced, Monster Madness would still be teetering on the brink of a fun experience. The ideas behind the game are solid, but the poor implementation too often leads to tedium or frustration. The numerous gameplay issues aren't helped by the fact that this is a full-priced title and there are more than a few multiplayer Xbox Live Arcade games that offer more fun at a fraction of the cost. Try before buying, and don't say we didn't warn you.

Shrek the Third isn’t a bad game; it’s an unpolished one. For the millions upon millions of movie-goers this summer, Shrek will work great as a compliment to the experience, though we can’t endorse it any further than a weekend rental. The game captures the feel of the franchise, but seriously lacks any sort of depth or attention to detail, as the game is ridden with buggy areas, odd animation glitches, and an entirely linear design. Any way you slice it, Shrek cuts corners, and though it’s still fun to rip through levels, beating up on enemies with simple combos and gag-based finishing attacks, players who want to dive in will find the waters shallow. For PSP specifically, the game brings the same style and gameplay as the other consoles, looking slightly weaker than PS2, and suffering from a bit more compression in the audio. Still, the experience is a decent one, and the one multiplayer level – though a step down from the console versions – is an added bonus for gaggles of PSP-owning Shrek fans; you’ll need another disc to play though. Still, the experience is a decent one, and the level-to-level feel makes it a fine licensed game for portable play. If you’re in dire need of some Shrek action this summer, give this one a rent. All others should save their cash for a more committed and in depth gaming experience; Shrek is thin even for a licensed title.
