The next time I come back to replay my all-time favorite video game, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is the version I’ll be reaching for. Its fantastic story of intrigue and betrayal mixed with one of the most satisfying RPG job systems around have endured the test of time. This is a mostly by-the-book remake, and it can’t quite be called a complete or definitive edition due to not including all content from all versions (and not doing enough to address the endgame imbalances of the original), but sometimes less is more. Stripping away the cruft of Final Fantasy Tactics while surfacing what made it special through smart UI tweaks, convenience features, and excellent new voice acting brings it almost completely up to date. It reminded me of why it was so amazing in the first place and allows me to confidently recommend it to newcomers without making excuses for the original’s 1990s creakiness.

LEGO Party doesn’t completely reinvent the tried-and-true Mario Party formula, but it does introduce some welcome tweaks to its structure, a uniformly high quality collection of minigames hard-tuned for hilarity, and an enjoyably silly game show-style presentation that’s yet to overstay its welcome. The four game boards on offer might be a few less than Super Mario Party Jamboree’s collection, but the transformative nature of their layouts brings welcome variety and surprise to each session, and the considerable minifig customisation options are a joy to tinker with. Creative, colourful, and a consistent crack up, LEGO Party is purpose-built to turn any boring old night into a block party filled with belly laughs.

Formula Legends is an earnest and consistently charming unlicensed homage to seven decades of F1 racing that’s one part Art of Rally and one part Micro Machines. With tracks, engine notes, and even visual filters that evolve dramatically over the decades, Formula Legends has me thoroughly addicted to exploring and unlocking its many eras of racing, and I was willing to put up with its laggy handling and its frustratingly inconsistent AI racers in order to take it all in.

Silent Hill f serves up a fresh new Japanese setting to explore, a fascinatingly dark story to unravel, and plenty of twisted freaks to torment you with. All of that made me wish I was a bit more enamoured with a combat system that early on seems like too much of a chore to be fun, yet eventually made me feel too overpowered at times to be consistently scared. I admire developer Neobards Entertainment for taking a big swing here, but like a laboured lurch from Hinako’s frustratingly fragile lead pipe it just hasn’t quite landed exactly where I’d like it to. Still, some spectacular art design, imaginative puzzles, and a compelling lead character means this latest mainline entry in Konami’s seminal survival horror series definitely earns a grade higher than a Silent Hill F; it’s probably closer to a Silent Hill B-.

How do you even sum up something as beautiful, special, memorable, and admirable as Hades 2? There is no one out there doing what Supergiant does as well as it does, and this exceptional action roguelite is some of this team’s best work on nearly every level (which is an astonishingly high bar to clear). It's the type of video game that reminds me why I love video games so damn much. The art is breathtaking, the characters are captivating, the combat is fast, fun, endlessly varied, and tactical, and the music is spectacular. May moonlight guide us. All of us.

I wasn’t expecting one of my favorite games of 2025 to be about a socially awkward blob in a stained onesie with such poor motor skills that he ragdolls to the ground on the slightest of uneven surfaces, but here we are. Baby Steps is a triumphantly quirky physics game that asks you to challenge yourself, both with alluring hiking obstacles that had me screaming to the heavens and a shockingly unconventional story and characters that ended up feeling like family by the end. Despite centering itself around intentionally awkward controls, it has a deceptive level of depth that made me eager to master it, and I got incredibly lost in the sauce as I tried to best its most daunting challenges. If you like a good laugh, extreme difficulty, or just hate yourself, then I can’t recommend Baby Steps enough.

Dire que Dying Light : The Beast est notre déception de la rentrée, c'est un euphémisme. Toutes les conditions étaient réunies pour livrer une belle tranche d'action-aventure resserrée sur 20 heures, sans gras ni remplissage excessif, et pourtant Techland a trouvé le moyen de trébucher sur de nombreux plans à cause d'une vision plus trouble que ce que les documents promotionnels voulaient bien laisser entendre. Du level design à l'intrigue en passant par l'omniprésence d'interminables combats contre les gros zombies de Castor Woods, les retrouvailles avec Kyle Crane sont d'abord excitantes, ensuite redondantes, puis carrément navrantes dans la dernière ligne droite. Un cas d'école de projet qui aurait dû réussir mais n'avait tout simplement pas les reins.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds fires on all cylinders with a fantastic roster of 24 of my favorite hedgehogs, foxes, echidnas, and more. The lineup of 24 main tracks and 15 Crossworld tracks is the best designed selection we've ever gotten in any Sonic racing game, and there is a generationally great soundtrack to accompany them. The racing itself feels fast, fantastic, and intuitive, with lots of options to tweak your stats to your preferred playstyle. There are plenty of modes that entertained my friends and me for hours, and CrossWorlds will probably be a regular staple of hangouts as more courses and characters are added over the coming months – though I do wish it had the option for splitscreen when playing online. The titular Crossworld mechanic is an awesome idea that keeps each race fresh, and a great way to potentially turn the tables on opponents thanks to a lengthy list of customization options. While I'm still speeding my way to complete all the challenges, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is one that I know I'll enjoy playing plenty more of in the months to come, crossing the finish line as my new favorite kart racing game of all time.

2XKO has found a way to distill what's fun about tag fighters – the insane mixups, the chaos of having assists fly in and out, the joy of landing a happy birthday as you deal damage to both your opponents characters at once – while mitigating a lot of the pain points that typically come with the territory. The simple inputs and intuitive combo logic lower the skill floor for complete newcomers, while the complex tag mechanics, Fuses, and deep offensive and defensive mechanics push the ceiling above the clouds. It is pretty slim out right now, with only 11 launch Champions and a lack of other modes beyond the very basics, but the update roadmap at least looks packed. Communication from Riot has been stellar so far as well, which has set 2XKO up to come strong out of the gate with a very promising path forward.

I would absolutely love to see the adventures of the 1x1 red and blue bricks continue, because LEGO Voyagers lays down a fantastic foundation that simply cries out for more – more story, more puzzles, and more time in this fantastically presented world. The building blocks here (sorry) are incredibly solid, and I’m confident there’s more goodness to mine in this plastic-brick well than the three-and-a-half-hour campaign can deliver. As a result, its ideas never got complex enough to blow my mind with clever solutions in the way that the best and most memorable puzzle games do. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly recommend a quick run through LEGO Voyagers with a friend or, better yet, your child if you happen to be a parent. It may be a tier below Hazelight’s Split Fiction and It Takes Two when it comes to delightful mandatory co-op games, but it’s still an excellent two-player time for gamers of almost any age.

Borderlands 4 is a badass open-world evolution of a wonderfully unhinged looter-shooter series that needed to try something new, and it largely nails the biggest swings it takes. Combat is slicker than ever thanks to exciting new movement options and some interesting enemy designs, and the entertaining story takes things in a fresh direction while still tying neatly into existing lore. The transition to an open world isn’t the smoothest, especially when troubling terrain with a few too many invisible walls can make it feel like these environments are all for show, but that’s more than worth putting up with in exchange for being able to chart your own path and freely explore the wacky, violent world of Kairos. The bugs my crew and I encountered were bad enough to occasionally sour our co-op groove, but in between them we had a great time, and my friends and I have found ourselves utterly at the mercy of its loot grind. The Borderlands series feels like it has been a bit stuck in the mud for some time now, and especially after a few patches, Borderlands 4 is exactly the kick in the pants it has needed.

NHL 26 is a competent entry in the series from EA Vancouver, even if it doesn’t do enough to stand out either from past years or other sports games. It still plays well enough, and after all these years there’s still something exciting about banking a goal in, or setting up the perfect pass. I rarely found myself unhappy with the actual gameplay, no matter how familiar it felt. On top of these things that worked well before, there are some small improvements that are welcome, like enjoying our collections of Ultimate Team players offline. At the same time, this series has stagnated visually, with relatively ugly players and crowds contrasted against beautiful hockey rinks. NHL 26 has left me feeling like I’ve just watched a 6-5 overtime win in April when my team has already been eliminated from playoff contention: there’s enjoyment to be had, but I can’t help but hope they get off to a better start next year.

Cronos: The New Dawn presents an intriguing mystery to unravel and a creepy sci-fi hellscape to explore, but its run-of-the-mill combat system prevents it from stepping out of the shadows cast by survival-horror heavyweights like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4. Its oppressively bleak environments are rich with interesting details to pore over, and a handful of its boss fights provoke a level of desperation that make them genuinely thrilling to survive, but elsewhere there’s clear padding that trips up the story’s momentum for considerable stretches at a time, and its predictable shock tactics are a step down from Silent Hill 2’s genuine scares. Like a Traveler’s corpse that’s trapped inside a temporal apocalypse, Cronos: The New Dawn contains the essence of survival horror, but there’s not quite enough spark in it to really bring it to life.

Hell is Us has a blend of exploration, puzzles, and combat that, while familiar, pushes you to really pay attention to the world around you in a way that’s both compelling and occasionally frustrating. Its stark approach to quest and map tracking forces you to use your own powers of observation and take notes to solve its challenges, and the puzzles littered throughout the world kept me on my toes more than action-adventure games like this typically do. Though its lack of enemy variety and fairly straightforward combat mean the action sections don’t stack up in the same way, though there are enough tools in Remi's arsenal to at least have a good time while taking down its monsters. Hell is Us doesn't shy away from showing the dark reality of a country ravaged by war while doing so, as well as how the worst parts of humanity are, in the end, more harrowing than our most terrifying nightmares. It holds up a mirror to us and the world we live in, pushing the boundaries of its own audience's discomfort in a way that will stick with me past any of its fights.

Belief and disappointment go hand in hand; just ask any sports fan. The crushing blow of losing lingers, but is eventually replaced by a newfound fervor – a flicker of hope that maybe this time things will be different. With the NBA 2K series, it’s mostly been frustrating in recent years because we so often end up being disappointed. Thankfully, NBA 2K26 bucks that trend with a MyCareer mode (for my money the star and core of each annual game) is the best it’s been in years thanks to its amazing prelude storyline. And like a group of reliable role players, a handful of tweaks, most notably the updated shot meter and player movement, tie everything together nicely so that the gameplay in each mode is less stressful and more rewarding. Of course, these excellent improvements make the imperfections stand out, with MyGM continuing to stick out like disgruntled benchwarmers. Overall, NBA 2K26 is the equivalent of a team that’s a few pieces away from contending, making this year’s catchphrase, “Ball Over Everything,” pretty fitting if you don’t count the endless microtransactions in all the online modes. Because when you’ve got the core performing this well, and all eyes are on the on-court action, it becomes easier to ignore those imperfections.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is still a great platformer three years later, and the Star-Crossed World DLC that comes as part of its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds a few more amusing levels to the mix – but that’s about it. A couple of cool new enemies, funny Mouthful Mode transformations, and clever ideas put its 12 stages in the top half of the heap overall, but with little beyond that, this comes across less like a proper expansion and more like a DLC level pack to invite you to come back for a weekend. It’s all fun enough that it’s fairly easy to recommend to anyone who has been dying for more Forgotten Land since finishing it, but doesn’t feel like an upgrade that will irresistibly suck you in like one of Kirby’s mouthfuls.

Off the back of 2017’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and 2020’s Streets of Rage 4, developer Lizardcube had already proven itself to be a safe pair of hands when it comes to resurrecting classic Sega series’, and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has only further cemented its reputation as a studio capable of making everything old feel new again. This is a genuinely engaging 2D action platformer, beautiful to behold and even better to play. It’s blessed with a combat system that expands in an invigorating way, as well as a healthy amount of secret side objectives that offer some serious optional challenges outside of the main story path. Like a ninja strapped onto a surfboard, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is eyecatching, deadly, and totally rad as hell.

While much of what I loved about Snake Eater is attached to the time and place of a boundary-pushing PS2 game in 2004, revisiting it through Metal Gear Solid Delta in 2025 came with a big burst of modernized nostalgia. It's not an expansive or complex game by today’s standards, and so parts can be underwhelming if you’re coming from a more modern Metal Gear. But it often shows how good stealth-action mechanics can age well, and the political drama with Kojima's signature brand of campiness is intact. To me, these are the things that make Metal Gear so memorable – and while some of it is eyerolling, the emotional highs of Snake Eater's story still hit as hard as I remember. Part of me is still curious about why this was made if it wasn’t going to come with more substantial changes outside of the big visual upgrade. However, if I were to point someone to one of the many versions available, this is the one I'd recommend, whether they're revisiting or playing for the first time. Kojima and the original team may not have been involved in this remake, but the spirit of Snake Eater persists.
