Much as it might take close examination to appreciate the amazing craftsmanship of a totem pole, the plain presentation of Kalimba shouldn't turn you away from the originality and fun harnessed locked within this puzzle-platformer. Save for a few puzzles that lose luster due to unintuitive and touchy physics, I mostly enjoyed testing both my platforming timing and my problem-solving skills with Kalimba's brain-busters.

Thanks to its clever puzzle design and brilliant progression, Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones sets itself apart from its more obvious inspirations. While the world is mostly dark and drab, utilizing the variety of interesting multi-purpose gadgets to solve puzzles and explore the cloning facility is incredibly rewarding, and the leaderboards provide the impetus to replay sections until they are mastered. Combine all that with excellent implementation of the Wii U’s unique features, including Miiverse messages and the GamePad’s use during the robust co-op mode, and you have a game that is among the best the eShop has to offer.

The Talos Principle is a good world to get lost in. The strong, heady philosophical focus isn't as integrated into the puzzles as it initially suggested, but for those of you who like to flex your minds by action rather than heavy reading or contemplation, the puzzle sections deliver just as well. Much like Portal, The Talos Principle makes you feel smart just by playing it, as the bulk of the puzzles hit that sweet spot between too easy and near-impossible.

Xeodrifter's mix of old-school 2D platformer sensibilities and new-school visual effects is charming, and finding a new ability that unlocks a new area tickles the same pleasure centers that Metroid does. Even when it felt like a pale imitation because of severely deficient enemy variety, the fun of experimenting with different gun behaviors and revisiting old areas to find new secrets kept my interest buoyed beyond its short runtime.

It would be easy to dismiss Just Dance 2015 as the “same-old-same-old,” but that would overlook this finely tuned party game’s special-effects-laden dance numbers, complete with chorus lines and elaborate sets and costumes, and the social integration that holds the world-wide Just Dance community together. Though its overeagerness to hand out points and make everyone feel like a winner robs it of some competitive value, Just Dance 2015 just works as a fun, get-up-and-move game, with a wink and smile along the way.

The Dark Below is a huge missed opportunity, a mish-mash of recycled ideas and content that fails to reinvigorate Destiny or address any of its biggest problems. The new raid is great, and the combat is as strong as it was before, but the new progression systems are limited and ultimately unrewarding, leaving me to wonder where Destiny will wind up if this is a sign of what’s to come.

The real treasure in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris wasn't Lara’s story, bipedal alligator warriors, or a bounty of gems, but solving complex and varied environmental puzzles with friends. Playing alone, discovering the different flavors of each new temple and figuring out the solution to a brain-busting puzzle all by myself is satisfying; replaying with others doubled that satisfaction because developer Crystal Dynamics renews the challenge with creative new twists on previously conquered obstacles that require teamwork to overcome.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is a great way to whet your appetite during the long wait for Kingdom Hearts 3, or to learn why so many of your fellow gamers are anticipating it so impatiently. It contains the best versions of two of the best games in the series, with upgraded visuals, music, and some really entertaining high-level challenges. Despite Re:coded’s failure to make the series’ overarching story comprehensible, this package is a great celebration of what can happen when two completely unrelated, but equally beloved things merge together.

I went in to Rugby 15 with the hope that the arcade presentation would result in a fun, pick-up-and-play rugby game, but my expectations were quickly tackled by a never-ending stream of bugs and paradoxical design decisions. Overall, this is an experience that’s so broken it’s hard to recommend. The best thing you can do is pass.

I completed my first circumnavigation of the Earth in just over 80 Days' time limit, but only barely. If we hadn’t taken a boat headed for Hawaii, if I didn’t gamble with the ship's engines by pushing them to the brink of explosion, perhaps I could have made it. I eagerly started again immediately, with a whole new set of text-based adventure decisions -- Fogg’s enthusiasm, and 80 Days’ absence of punishment or actual sense of failure, had me excited to do it all over again. I had a spectacular, unforgettable adventure story to show for my three-hour adventure, and couldn’t wait to learn more about the world, its characters, and the human desire to discover.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is a good reason to revisit a classic arcade game. New 3D maps add depth and ideas to a tried-and-true formula, but they aren’t taken far enough to make this feel like a real sequel. Adventure mode’s poor pacing and repetition didn’t hold my interest, but King and Pacifism modes are much more interesting – as are the helpful A.I. drones, which provide more than enough reasons to go back and chase those leaderboards.

The Crew deserves credit for the frankly staggering size of its open world, and the fact that it’s absolutely filled to the brim with racing, challenges, a fat multiplayer offering, and exploration potential. This scope, however, has resulted in some noticeable visual concessions, the racing itself is too often hamstrung by AI prone to unfair bursts of speed that do nothing but frustrate, and I was surprised at how unwilling the community currently seems to join co-op missions and just how difficult the game’s often miserly winnings makes collecting the cars.

The Witcher Adventure Game is a faithful (perhaps too faithful) translation of a mildly fun tabletop experience saddled with simplistic, repetitive objectives. Learning the strategies behind playing each of the four heroes is where the fun lies, though it often feels like you’re just playing alongside other players - not against them. It doesn’t try to be more than a digital board game, either, so if you’re hoping for outrageous battle scenes and visual splendor, it’s best to hold out for The Witcher 3.

If you set This War of Mine’s theme aside, you'd have a tough and demanding survival and resource-management game – but it never lets you forget that it's about a serious and sad subject. It's full of thorny problems, and that just makes your small gains all the sweeter. As things begin to go wrong, the choices get harder. Do you intervene when you see a soldier assaulting a woman in a ruined supermarket, or do you keep your head down? Do you shoot a medicine you can’t afford? These questions don't have right answers. But posing them, and putting the moral issues in sharp relief alongside the physical ones, is what makes This War of Mine one of the year's most thoughtful games.

I like Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, but I don’t love it as much as I’ve loved previous games in the series. It definitely delivers on the promise of letting me play with charmingly realized versions of many of my favorite DC heroes and villains, and it even presents a setting with lots of great surprises, challenges, and systems that promote variety. As a longtime DC fan, I do wish it had given me the chance to dig into more locations and plot elements from the comics, but the biggest hurdle for me to clear is the bizarre cameos.

Persona Q is a 60-plus hour roleplaying experience that both charms and entertains. Though there were points when its puzzles completely stumped me, and the combat’s steep difficulty, made me want to launch my 3DS into orbit a few times, the enjoyable battle system, deep exploration, and generous dollops of fanservice made it worth the effort.

As a 3D remake, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby do a fantastic job of reintroducing Hoenn. Little details, like characters turning their heads to look as you pass or flocks of Wingulls flying overhead, make the region really come to life, and small updates and tweaks help make the journey smoother. Still, a few of its flaws are even more glaring in 3D, especially the excess water Pokémon and often dull navigation of their habitats. The added online features could help mitigate some of the type imbalances — I’m a huge fan of Wonder Trade — and there are even a few post-game surprises to encourage you to keep training well beyond the 25-hour main story.
