Vampyr manages to deliver on its promise to make choices matter. Every decision has implications that spider out in unseen directions, often far into the future. While there are some wobbles in terms of combat and load times, the engaging storyline and premise carry this title far.

Siempre con la vista puesta en que Vampyr no está pensado como un Triple A desde sus inicios, estamos ante uno de los juegos más sólidos y con más peso narrativo de los últimos meses. Toda una oda a los vampiros, con una mecánica que por igual nos hace explorar, mezclar y sintetizar tónicos que nos enfrenta a brutales criaturas. Una gran experiencia solo lacrada por cierta tosquedad en los combates pero que se mueve a un alto nivel en ambientación, música y con una duración más que interesante. Si renunciamos a la tendencia constante de juegos online y de actualizaciones periódicas, vamos a centrarnos en uno de los títulos "single player" de mayor nivel y con una historia más interesante de la temporada. Y si ya somos fans de los seres nocturnos con colmillos... una gozada.

Though the game lacks polish in many areas, it stars a clever morality system that entices players towards both good and evil deeds, a well-rounded web of background NPCs, and an intriguing overall narrative of an undead doctor investigating the spread of the Spanish Influenza, making Vampyr a treat for any vampire fan.

Vampyr è un action RPG in grado di offrire un'esperienza coinvolgente, impegnativa, a tratti inquietante, forte di un'ambientazione perfetta per raccontare questo tipo di storie. La Londra del 1918 in cui si muove il dottor Jonathan Reid, appena creato vampiro, è oscura e minacciosa, con pericoli dietro ogni angolo che si manifestano nella forma di cacciatori e mostri, da affrontare secondo le meccaniche di un sistema da combattimento dotato di uno spessore sorprendente, tante volte spietato. È in questo contesto che si sviluppano le vicende di un set di personaggi con cui dovremo interagire e rapportarci, costruendo sulla base delle nostre scelte un epilogo differente al termine di una campagna discretamente corposa, che non mancherà di lasciare il segno. Anzi, due: rigorosamente sul collo.

Proprio come Remember Me, Vampyr è un titolo che vive di luci e ombre e che sembra uscito direttamente dalla scorsa generazione, un’epoca videoludica ricca di pregi e contraddizioni che ormai non esiste più. Brilla – non senza qualche piccola perplessità – nella narrativa, ma al contempo cade vittima di alcune ingenuità a tratti perfino grossolane e fortemente penalizzanti, almeno per un titolo che, per coerenza con il suo genere, non dovrebbe più soltanto limitarsi a raccontare una storia, bensì provare anche a fare qualcos’altro. Doveva essere il progetto della definitiva consacrazione di Dontnod, ma così, purtroppo, non è stato. Gli appassionati dei precedenti lavori dello studio d’oltralpe probabilmente lo ameranno comunque, riconoscendo nel gioco un’impronta autoriale ben visibile nella scrittura di storia e dialoghi e nell’impatto visivo. Tutti gli altri, però, dovrebbero pensarci su due volte. Se anteponete la narrativa al gameplay, Vampyr può sicuramente piacervi, ma anche in quel caso dovreste mettere in conto più di un elemento, fra cui la totale mancanza di un’interazione che non sia “fai la spola da un NPC all’altro”, prima di dargli quella chance che comunque, per determinate nicchie di pubblico, merita.

Vampyr feels like a game we haven't seen this generation. It's not triple-A but it's not indie, it falls somewhere in the middle. It has that charming amount of jank, really ambitious and original ideas, and it's a game many will sleep on because it's not as well known but those who play it likely won't regret picking it up. It may not be a perfect game but it knows how to execute on its unique premise and gameplay concepts well enough that it's one I can't help but recommend.

Avec son concept original et ses parti-pris parfois archaïques en termes de game design, Vampyr agace autant qu'il fait rêver. En laissant le libre arbitre au joueur, DONTNOD lui offre la possibilité de faire de Londres un terrain stérile, jonché de combats pas vraiment inspirés. Un tel cheminement moral, bien que possible et pris en compte, est en tout point à éviter sur Vampyr car il vous priverait de ce que le jeu a de mieux à offrir : son ambiance si particulière et ses PNJ. Univers halluciné, coincé entre la guerre, la maladies et l’ésotérisme, le monde de Vampyr nous offre une trentaine d’heures de lecture, de dialogues et de quêtes, desquelles on ressort satisfait mais forcément déçu de certaines mécaniques. Un bon jeu, qui aurait tout de même mérité plus de soin au niveau de la cohérence de ses différents systèmes.

Vampyr is a slow burn of an RPG, taking its time to ramp up its intriguing blend of science and the supernatural in an elaborately gloomy version of London. When it gets going you can see the potential of the way it offers you more power if you consume its interesting citizens. But Vampyr never commits to this idea to the point where I felt I needed to make that sacrifice to succeed in its relatively simple combat, which leaves it feeling toothless and vulnerable to having a lot of its fun sucked away by technical issues, despite its genuinely engaging story.

Dommage : c’est le premier mot qui vient à l’esprit lorsqu’on fait le bilan de Vampyr. Dommage de voir un univers aussi fascinant se casser les dents sur les règles basiques de l’open world. Dommage de voir une écriture aussi talentueuse se diluer en combats insupportables de répétitivité. Dommage de voir tant d’idées originales effacées par des égarements de game design. Si vous n’êtes pas sensibles aux expériences misant sur la narration plutôt que le gameplay, il convient même mieux d’enlever un point de plus à cette note finale. Pour les autres, Vampyr reste une expérience précieuse, bien que brouillonne, qui cache un trésor d’écriture et de maturité, où il est parfois délicieux de s’y perdre.

Vampyr fait partie de ces jeux dont les qualités l’emportent sur les défauts. Il flirte parfois dangereusement avec la frontière du ratage et ne tient pas toutes ses promesses. Pourtant, après plus de 25 heures on a envie de tout lui pardonner. On retient son atmosphère frissonnante et malsaine, ses histoires et ses personnages torturés mais aussi ses musiques que l’on a déjà envie de réécouter. Au final, on retient surtout un univers dans lequel on a hâte de replonger mais pas à n’importe quel prix. Si on doit retrouver Vampyr, il a tout intérêt à travailler ses séquences d’action et à pousser ses idées jusqu’au bout, sans quoi on ne sera peut-être pas aussi clément la seconde fois. D’ici là, on peut déjà largement se satisfaire de cet excellent jeu d’aventures un poil gâché par des envies d’action, et c’est déjà très bien comme ça.

Vampyr is a game that's mainly focused on telling a good story and developing its characters, which it does respectably. That being said, things such as combat, mission variety, and even hardware, end up getting put to the wayside. All in all, it's a rather bleak experience.
