Shenmue I and II isn’t a perfect collection, but it is the best overall way to experience two remarkable games. Having the ability to enjoy the core adventure with a widescreen aspect ratio feels like it’s how the game was always meant to be enjoyed and the redone controls are much easier on the hands than the original d-pad-centric setup. The dramatic increase in overall image clarity and detail of the world helps things as well and the issue of core games having clunky English acting can now be easily resolved with Japanese voices using English subtitles — which significantly adds to the martial arts movie feel. These are epic adventures and can now be enjoyed on modern-day hardware for the first time. Anyone who loved them before should get them as soon as possible to prepare for Shenmue III, while newcomers to the series have a fantastic starting point to get fully caught up on Ryo and his adventures.

Shenmue I & II brings the Dreamcast classics to a new audience as well as those nostalgic for the old days. They are still fun, exciting games even with a few quirks due to their age and are well worth playing in 2018.

Sottovalutato all’epoca, Shenmue rischia di attirare critiche e perplessità anche dopo 19 anni. E, ancora una volta, per colpe non sue. Il valore dei due giochi originali, che non può essere messo in discussione, cozza un po’ con l’oziosa opera di rimasterizzazione operata dalla Sega del XXI secolo. D’altro canto, approcciarsi a Shenmue pensando di trovarsi di fronte a uno spin off di Yakuza – e non sarebbe vero neppure il contrario – rischia di rovinare l’esperienza all’incauto acquirente. In linea di massima, Shenmue I & II si rivolge, piuttosto che ai vecchietti, alle nuove leve. A chi, di Shenmue, ha sentito solo parlare, ma è pronto a sfidare il tempo e pure i controlli per conoscere, amare, piangere, viaggiare. La vendetta, purtroppo, non si è ancora compiuta.

Shenmue fue uno de los grandes pasos en la evolución de los videojuegos, gracias a su mundo vivo y extenso. Sin embargo, con el paso de los años su fórmula ha envejecido (en parte por culpa de la serie Yakuza, hija ilegítima de esta serie), haciendo que su propuesta sea menos digerible para los tiempos que corren. Sin embargo, si lo que buscas es rememorar las aventuras de Ryo Hazuki, o ponerte al día antes de Shenmue III, esta es la mejor ocasión que tendrás, aunque no habría estado mal encontrar una dosis extra de mejoras o de añadidos únicos, específicos de esta edición del juego.

If it weren't for some technical aspects and mechanics held back by their age, Shenmue would be easy to recommend to just about anyone. So long as Shenmue 3 really adapts itself for the modern gamer while still remaining Shenmue at its core, it could be something incredibly special. After hearing about this series for so long (both through praise and criticism), I can safely say I am a believer in Shenmue and can't wait to play 3 next year.

Qu’on se le dise, les premières heures passées à arpenter les rues grisâtres de Shenmue se révèlent assez pénibles. Les deux titres ont beaucoup vieilli, et cette édition remasterisée n’apporte finalement, en dehors d’une traduction intégrale en français, qu’un vague lifting des textures et de l’interface. Passé le plaisir de la découverte, on est assez vite rebuté par un gameplay lourd, mais surtout par un rythme très mou, presque soporifique. Fort heureusement, si les deux titres ont pris un sacré coup de vieux sur de nombreux aspects, leur trame et leur mise en scène sont toutefois au top. La plongée dans cet univers génial, peignant un Japon des années 80 et un Hong Kong labyrinthique, est passionnante, et l’on en ressort encore aujourd’hui grandi. Bien entendu, Shenmue I & II n’est pas une compilation à mettre entre toutes les mains. Toutefois, si vous pensez pouvoir faire abstraction de son aspect désuet et mollasson au profit d’une trame captivante, alors foncez !
