The Bureau: XCOM Declassified es un buen título de acción táctica que resuelve de forma genial el género híbrido con un sistema de gestión de órdenes que supera a su inspirador Mass Effect al que pertenece y que plantea una historia interesante y bien desarrollada a la altura de un Bioshock con algunas carencias en la IA de los agentes aliados y unos gráficos que mejoran, como no, en la versión PC gracias a los añadidos técnicos en ciertas tarjetas.

Probabilmente se avete già gettato un’occhio al voto globale della recensione vi starete chiedendo il motivo. Intendiamoci, The Bureau non è un gioco brutto, ma un prodotto grezzo, con alcune idee interessati ma mal eseguite. Proprio come il classico ragazzino difficile, quello che è svogliato, non si impegna ma ogni tanto se ne esce con qualche trovata interessante quando meno te l’aspetti. Dateci un’occhiata se, come il sottoscritto, amate la fantascienza ed entrambe le serie di XCOM e Mass Effect. Solo così potrete apprezzare tutto ciò che The Bureau ha da offrirvi.

The Bureau aurait pu être un excellent TPS, malheureusement il finit par décevoir peu à peu du fait de son immersion brisée par de nombreux problèmes (optimisation, finition, cohérence). Il reste tout de même un bon titre pour qui souhaite explorer une ambiance savoureuse mêlant invasion alien et années 60. Difficile tout de même de se prendre au jeu totalement et c'est avec une certaine distance que l'on aborde peu à peu l'aventure.

Die langatmigen Gespräche in der spielerisch leeren Basis sind symptomatisch für das Spiel: Es stecken gute Ideen drin und viele werden richtig umgesetzt. Das Entwickeln der Agenten etwa, das Kombinieren ihrer Fähigkeiten im Kampf sowie die Sorge um den Tod der Kameraden. Über die interessanten Talente meiner Agenten und das Dirigieren im Zeitraffer habe ich irgendwann den Groove des schnellen Taktik-Shooters gefunden. Dem fehlen allerdings wichtige Bausteine. Wieso darf ich meine Begleiter z.B. nicht anweisen, sich an einer entfernten Position zu verbarrikadieren? Und warum geraten sie durch unsinnige Fehler in Schwierigkeiten? Abgesehen davon steht The Bureau die rasante Action nicht gut, weil die trägen Bewegungen des Helden schlecht zum flotten Ablauf passen. Viele Vereinfachungen sind zudem faule Kompromisse: Manche Schüsse schlagen durch Wände, Versorgungskisten im feindlichen Stützpunkt zerstören die Illusion und die ständigen Checkpunkte machen das Spiel zu leicht. Unterm Strich bin ich ausgerechnet für die holprige Geschichte am Ball geblieben. Die bedient sich mit interessanten Wendungen immerhin so geschickt in der Klischeekiste, dass der Science-Fiction-Nerd in mir zufrieden war. Mehr allerdings nicht.

Don't call this XCOM. While its tactical combat works well enough to prevent The Bureau: XCOM Declassified from being straight-up bad, everything else is fumbled so often and so bizarrely that I can’t recommend it. Hell, this prequel can’t even manage to explain where the name XCOM comes from even as it shows it being coined – it’s simply pulled out of thin air. That shoddy storytelling and poorly thought-out mechanics become the most memorable thing about it, and that’s not worth much.

he Bureau‘s bright spots are all too rare. The deeper you get into the game, the more frustrating it becomes. It may not be fair to criticize a game for being something it isn’t, but it’s not unreasonable to expect a certain level of quality from your story-driven gameplay. Why didn’t 2K Marin focus more on character development? Why wasn’t there more emphasize on 1960s technology and culture? Why not try to make more distinctive aliens and alien weapons rather than just making stuff that looks so familiar from a plethora of other games? In the case of The Bureau, these questions have to be asked since the bones of a better game can be glimpsed underneath the piled bodies of your dim-witted squadmates. It could have been Mass Effect by way of Mad Men. Instead it’s just another shooter with aliens and a scratchy-voiced main character.

Overall though, The Bureau is something of a disappointment. It feels like a compromise, an awkward mix of shooter and strategy game in which neither element is allowed to shine. Shooter fans will most likely be reminded of superior titles like Uncharted and Gears of War, while strategy fans will be prompted to revisit the excellent XCOM: Enemy Unknown. As it stands, The Bureau is a perfect example of the dangers of attempting to appeal to everybody, proving that, more often than not, you won't appeal to anybody.
