Le menu taille XXL concocté par id Software est fait pour les gourmands d’action voulant toujours plus de ketchup. Entre deux tranches de rigolade à bord d’un robot géant ou sur le dos d’un dragon féroce, The Dark Ages profite de ses zones gigantesques pour laisser le guerrier décider à quelle sauce smoky BBQ il va être mangé. Les mondes plus ouverts permettent des affrontements hors-normes jamais vus dans un Doom, mais à l’instar des phases en Mecha ou en dragon, tout est fait pour provoquer des sensations fortes immédiates au risque de manquer un chouilla de profondeur. En tout cas, la production de Bethesda ne rabâche pas les mêmes formules, aussi magiques soient-elles : elle s’appuie sur un savoir-faire ancestral pour mieux s’aventurer vers des plans astraux démoniaques.

Doom: The Dark Ages llega con toda la brutalidad y espectacularidad que se espera, pero también con ganas de ser distinto y dejar su propia huella. Aquí no se trata solo de mejorar lo anterior, sino de experimentar y darle identidad propia. El nuevo escudo cambia por completo la forma de jugar: ahora no solo corres como loco, sino que te plantas, bloqueas y haces parrys, con una ventana generosa para que todo el mundo lo use. Como precuela no solo nos cuenta los hechos anteriores con cinemáticas decentes, sino que rinde homenaje al Doom clásico. Quizá el punto más distintivo sean los escenarios, más variados y abiertos. Puede dividir a los fans entre los que prefieren el frenetismo clásico y los que disfrutan explorando. En resumen, Doom sigue siendo Doom, pero cada entrega busca su propia identidad, y eso es justo lo que lo mantiene fresco.

Much like its lead character, Death end re;Quest: Code Z commits a few missteps. From near-obliged grinding to stinginess with a key resource, you will encounter frustration nearly as often as witnessing one of the franchise’s Death Ends. Players with limited patience might be better off revisiting the previous two entries.

DOOM The Dark Ages nous met donc dans une position plutôt délicate. D’un côté, on a totalement adoré incarner le Slayer dans un univers médiéval démesuré, grâce à un gameplay à la fois « old-school » et moderne plus brutal et jouissif que jamais, et même globalement plus accessible. De l’autre, les tentatives de son studio d’apporter plus de profondeur à l’histoire de la franchise et aux mécaniques de jeu tombent dans l’ensemble sérieusement à plat. Cela ne nous a cependant pas empêché de prendre un pied monstrueux à éviscérer des armées de démons et une claque graphique et technique toujours aussi magistrale.

Doom: The Dark Ages segna una svolta audace per la saga, abbandonando la frenesia di Doom Eternal in favore di un'azione più pesante e brutale. Non tutto funziona alla perfezione (trama blanda, un po’ di ripetitività nel finale, niente multiplayer, colonna sonora deludente) e i diversivi in stile Panzer Dragoon e Rampage sono poco sfruttati, ma la nuova identità del Doom Slayer, il design aperto dei livelli, la centralità dell’esplorazione e il flusso dei combattimenti regaleranno momenti di puro godimento agli amanti della serie.

DOOM: The Dark Ages è un gioco che, pur restando solido e affascinante, non riesce a replicare la potenza innovativa del suo predecessore. È un capitolo che cerca di dare una nuova rilettura alla saga, ma lo fa in modo troppo conservativo, senza riuscire a mantenere quel senso di freschezza che aveva caratterizzato la brillante direzione intrapresa da DOOM Eternal. Se da un lato la lentezza ponderata degli scontri e la complessità delle ambientazioni hanno un loro fascino, dall’altro la mancanza di quella spinta dinamica lascia un retrogusto amaro. Per i fan più affezionati, è comunque un’esperienza meritevole di essere vissuta, ma che non rappresenta l’apice della saga.

Con Doom: The Dark Ages, id Software torna alle origini del Doom Slayer con una ricetta ludica a cavallo fra passato e futuro, che riprende alcuni dei lineamenti classici del franchise e li rielabora in accordo con i caratteri della nuova ambientazione, cercando di massimizzare l'intensità degli scontri e la profondità del gameplay. Gran parte degli innesti e delle revisioni funziona alla stragrande, e si fa matrice di un nucleo ludico quantomai appagante e sfaccettato. I passaggi che si allontanano in maniera più netta da questo cuore pulsante sono anche quelli più dissonanti, ma la media qualitativa dell'esperienza si attesta comunque su livelli elevatissimi. Sì, forse The Dark Ages è un prodotto meno organico del precedente Eternal, ma ci risulta impossibile svincolarlo dalla soglia dell'eccellenza.

Doom: The Dark Ages Doom: The Dark Ages segna una svolta decisa e consapevole per il franchise, proponendo un’esperienza dark fantasy/fantascientifica per giocatore singolo più matura, viscerale e atmosferica. Abbandonata la frenesia ultratecnica di Doom Eternal, il gioco si rifà a un immaginario medievale oscuro e lovecraftiano, dando vita a uno shooter più lento, ma non per questo meno brutale o appagante. L’introduzione di nuove meccaniche di parata (grazie all'incredibile sega scudo), armi corpo a corpo, nuove e devastanti bocche da fuoco e sezioni a bordo di mech e draghi rende il gameplay sorprendentemente vario e coerente con l’ambientazione. Nonostante qualche rischio di ripetitività e l’assenza del comparto multiplayer, The Dark Ages riesce a rinnovare la formula senza tradire l’identità del Doom Slayer e a renderla - grazie alle tante funzioni di accessibilità - alla portata di qualsiasi giocatore. È un Doom diverso e, proprio per questo, dannatamente affascinante! I’ve let out a lot of rage playing DOOM: The Dark Ages. It’s cathartic in the most bloodthirsty way, and I can’t stress how nice it has been to just simply switch off my brain and get stuck into a bunch of demons. It scratches the same itch I have when I’m watching a particularly energetic ice hockey match, where the biff gets real and the atmosphere is so electric that it gets your blood pumping hard enough to hear it in your ears. The game may not be perfect, but it is a really meaty fiesta of fighting. Tearing demons asunder will never not be cool as hell, and for that reason alone, I can easily see myself coming back to DOOM: The Dark Ages time and time again – especially after a particularly stressful week.

DOOM: The Dark Ages goes for something slightly different as it turns back time for a medieval assault on hell’s legions. Not every change pays off, as the introduction of a mech and dragon adds very little to the overall experience. However, when The Dark Ages gets to the FPS action, there aren’t many who do it better than id Software. Take some time to adjust to DOOM: The Dark Ages, and you’ll discover another fantastically ferocious first-person shooter.

Doom: The Dark Ages gets so much right, that its main flaws come when the game takes you away from its main, excellent combat loop. While not every new addition works, the game’s new open zones are a treat, and the Doomslayer’s arsenal is still incredibly fun to run around with.
