Colossale, appassionante e sorprendente, Elden ring è il punto più alto mai toccato da FromSoftware. Un nuovo modo di concepire il genere che segna l’inizio di una nuova e dirompente era per il team di Miyazaki. Impreziosito da un art direction illuminata e da un inedito approccio all’esplorazione che valorizza e intensifica il senso di scoperta e di libertà del giocatore, il titolo restituisce agli appassionati elementi e sensazioni familiari, riuscendo a sfruttare al meglio tutte le potenzialità del nuovo contesto open world. Al netto di qualche imprecisione piuttosto marcata sul fronte tecnico, Elden Ring è persino più maestoso, più ricco e più appagante di quanto avessimo potuto mai immaginare. Un’esperienza ludica, intensa e totalizzante, che non dimenticheremo per molto, molto tempo.

Divine new setting aside, Dawn of Ragnarok doesn’t take the long-standing formula of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to new heights in any significant way. The Hugr-Rip and new host of supernatural abilities are a fun addition to the series, but they’re used so sparingly that they don’t feel vital. Outside of that, my 20-hour adventure through Eivor’s godly alter ego felt much like the last 100-plus hours I’ve spent with them since the main game came out 15 months ago. It’s consistently fun gameplay, yes, but also disappointing and overworn in that I’m starved for some kind of real shakeup to how it plays. Instead, the only surprises left to anticipate are how Ubisoft is going to repurpose systems we’ve already seen every bit of to fit into a new theme and setting. The banality of the mostly unaltered flow of gameplay doesn’t do the celestial locales and story any justice.

While it stumbles greatly in execution, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla - Dawn of Ragnarök reignites the magic of the main game with a vast realm to explore and myriad secrets to discover using the new Hugr powers. It’s still a ton of fun, just don’t expect the story to be all that coherent.

Dawn of Ragnarok does enough to satisfy by the time that the credits roll, but if you're burnt out on Assassin's Creed Valhalla, there isn't much here that'll reignite your interest. The mythological angle is well played, the fantastical setting is cool, and Odin makes for an intriguing lead, but after a year of DLC and updates, Valhalla's gameplay loop is wearing a bit thin.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok is a solid expansion that introduces some interesting gameplay mechanics and plenty of new content that, at the end of the day, doesn't change how the game is played in a significant way. After a long base game and two expansions, Dawn of Ragnarok definitely needed to be something more to become an essential purchase, as only those who haven't had enough of Assassin's Creed Valhalla will fully appreciate the coming of Ragnarok and the end of an age.

It may be a little rough around the edges, but Aztech Forgotten Gods certainly has its charms. It’s refreshing to see a rarely seen historical setting brought to life in a new way, and Achtli’s struggle to overcome her own past while grappling with the history of Aztec civilization makes her a worthy heroine. But while it can be an enjoyable adventure in its own right, Aztech doesn’t stand out among the more ambitious big-budget games it’s competing for attention with right now – especially when its disobedient camera, weak combat, and aggravating boss battles drag its otherwise satisfying flying back down to Earth.

Overall, Aztech: Forgotten Gods is a great palette cleanser compared to the more expansive and open-world type games you see in recent years. The charming story, satisfying gameplay loop and a well-realized world with believable characters, helps the game punch above the weight of a typical indie game. The only time the budget shows itself is in the art assets, which is mitigated by the game’s arresting art style. If you’re looking to see the great work emerging out of the independent scene, players who are fans of 3D action platformers with fast-paced boss battles should play this game.

Bungie needed a much-needed win with Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. Neither Shadowkeep nor Beyond Light did much to push the main narrative forward and ended up feeling like one-off stories. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen does this, delivering the best narrative and campaign of any Destiny release and expansion. The expansion throws out the familiar MMO-like structure of previous Destiny campaigns to tell a more thoughtful narrative with, finally, some interesting characters. The campaign is a triumph, but the expansion does suffer from its lack of newness. Subclasses, enemies and activities remain stubbornly stagnant, never offering much new from the status quo. Savathûn’s Throne World is an exotic new locale to explore but feels too empty and void of activities to the point that it never feels like it was worth losing The Tangled Shore. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is a good expansion, combining an excellent campaign and raid with a decent content offering, even though not much of it feels exactly new. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen may not be the best overall expansion in Destiny history, but this queen sure does put on a good show while it lasts.

Have A Nice Death is a punishing but satisfying roguelike with some diabolically tough boss fights. The darkly dorky setting and office humor lend it more than enough charm to make me want to discover more of its world. But it's made significantly more frustrating than it probably needs to be by very stingy long-term progression and limited defensive abilities in comparison to its huge array of fun-to-use offensive weapons. When I wasn't feeling the discouraging void inside dragging me down, I was reveling in the hundreds of ways I could make these visually and mechanically memorable undead wish they never lived at all.

Have a Nice Death è un ottimo Roguelite. Il gameplay soddisfa i palati fini, nonché quelli abituati a sfide tutt'altro che clementi. Quel che manca all'opera per spiccare davvero il salto di qualità definitivo è una diversificazione strutturale maggiore, con qualche concessione in meno alla ridondanza. Solo applausi invece per la magnifica direzione artistica e per la scrittura mortalmente divertente. Insomma, morire non è mai stato così piacevole come nell'improbabile Death Inc.
