Ultros est un Metroidvania à la fois générique et original. Générique parce qu’il suit à la lettre la recette éculée du genre, et le fait plutôt bien. Quant à l’originalité, nous la retrouvons dans la radicalité esthétique du soft, ainsi que dans le principe de boucle temporelle changeant un peu la manière d’appréhender le backtracking. Mais surtout, c’est dans sa mécanique centrée autour des végétaux, et ce qui se greffe autour, que le jeu trouve sa singularité. Malheureusement, il faudra passer des premières heures convenues et accepter une expérience finalement assez usante et peu mémorable, la faute au level design sans saveur, au manque de moments marquants et à un univers qui n’a pas su nous transporter comme souhaité.

Dopo averlo finito, ci è venuto da pensare che Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden è quel tipo di esperienza che solo uno studio come DON'T NOD può permettersi di fare e che andrebbe premiato anche solo per il coraggio dimostrato di proporre un'avventura simile in un'ambientazione completamente inedita, per quanto non proprio originalissima. Una rarità di questi tempi. Non è privo di problemi, tra il dover tornare fin troppo spesso sui propri passi e la mancanza di alcune informazioni utili nell'inventario, ma a conti fatti si tratta di difetti veniali per un'esperienza che si è rivelata per molti versi davvero coinvolgente e che cresce nel finale, proponendo sempre situazioni limite che mettono alla prova il giocatore da diversi punti di vista.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden è l'opera della maturità di DON'T NOD: con una grande narrativa sempre credibile e con temi importanti, una scala di grigi dove nulla è netto e ogni scelta è complicata da prendere, e un impianto di gioco preso di peso da God of War, riesce ad appassionare e convincere. Nonostante alcune incertezze e imprecisioni del combat system, e qualche piccolo singhiozzo tecnico, è davvero difficile parlar male di un'opera così solida e mai fuori fuoco.

Banishers Ghosts of New Eden est un jeu qui nous livre une histoire d’amour convaincante, qui nous donne envie de la voir arriver à sa conclusion. Le problème, c’est que la plupart des autres éléments du jeu y passent au profit de la relation entre Antea et Red. La quasi-totalité des personnages secondaires ne sont pas intéressants et la trame principale s’oublie dans un florilège de problèmes à résoudre pour les habitants de New Eden. Ce n’est pas aidé par un monde semi-ouvert dont l’exploration se montre vite ennuyante. Heureusement, les combats s’avèrent déjà plus prenants, tout comme les fameux Cas de Hantise. On se sent comme un enquêteur du paranormal, qui doit également prendre de lourdes décisions qui auront de vraies conséquences. On constate finalement que c’est un jeu qui a plein de bonnes idées, mais qui n’a pas su toutes les exécuter de la bonne façon.

2024 démarre en fanfare et compte un nouveau hit (déjà !) dans ses rangs. Banishers Ghosts Of New Eden nous transporte d’un récit sombre, poignant et émouvant où chacun de nos choix a un impact sur l’arrivée. On adhère totalement à ce que nous propose DontNod avec ce couple déchiré, cette dualité de gameplay et ce monde dangereux, mais dont on veut parcourir le moindre recoin. On ne voit pas grand-chose à reprocher à cette nouvelle production qui a tant à nous offrir et nous séduit des heures durant.

Davvero una bella sorpresa questa di Don’t Nod, che dopo produzioni decisamente più piccole torna su PC e console con il suo gioco più ambizioso di sempre. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden è infatti un action adventure in terza persona longevo, tecnicamente valido e forte di una narrazione che ha davvero poco da invidiare ai pesi massimi del genere. E se i punti di riferimento del team francese rimangono chiaramente gli ultimi due God of War (superiori però sotto quasi tutti i punti di vista), le avventure di Red e Altea sfruttano meglio il combattimento a due e raccontano una storia più sentita ed emozionante.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden è l’ennesimo centro di Don’t Nod. Si tratta di un’avventura non certo priva di sbavature e difetti, su tutti le animazioni legnose, né profonda come alcuni congeneri. Eppure, riesce ad intrattenere e divertire grazie a diverse caratteristiche interessanti. La trama, tanto per cominciare, è ottimamente scritta. Le scelte morali a cui verrete messi di fronte non sono affatto facili da sbrogliare. Alcune boss fight vi resteranno impresse. Anche la grafica, in combinazione con l’art design, sa regalare scorci suggestivi niente male. Un gioco assolutamente da tenere in considerazione, a patto di amare le avventure in cui la trama ricopre un ruolo tutt’altro che secondario.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a fun action game with a solid concept and a stellar paranormal investigation system. Its story about struggling to let go of loved ones in death is worth hearing, even when its pacing occasionally gets sluggish and indulgent. The combat system also tries some interesting new things that largely work out, only dragged down by poor enemy variety and wonky controls. Still, swapping between the corporeal and ghostly planes instantaneously is every bit as cool when solving mysteries as it is during fights, and the writing and characters help carry Banishers across its rougher patches. That made saying goodbye to them fittingly difficult, decaying flesh and all.

There's little doubt Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is Don't Nod's finest action game yet. I would also venture to say it's one of their best games, period, not to mention a great action RPG in its own right thanks to enjoyable combat, a big world with lots of content to explore and interesting stories to experience, and particularly for the amazing couple of lover protagonists.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden es una historia llena de amor, espíritus y sacrificios. Este juego cuenta con una jugabilidad muy satisfactoria y difícil, ya que obliga a los jugadores a enfrentarse a una serie de dilemas éticos, siguiendo así la tónica habitual de DON'T NOD. Inmersiva y bella, esta experiencia es capaz de enamorar a cualquier tipo de jugador.

Banishers demuestra que Dontnod sigue en constante crecimiento y no le temen a nada. Este es uno de sus juegos más ambiciosos, por escala, duración, entornos muy atractivos y una estructura de juego que quiere ser grande. Por ello, no siempre lo consigue y el combate tiene sus más y sus menos. Pero ni todo este embellecimiento puede ocultar la cara más humana y filosófica del estudio, al que le gusta siempre contarnos un cuento sobrenatural, pero no para que nos evadamos de la realidad, sino para que la afrontemos después a través de un dilema moral que abarca toda la aventura. No, no siempre es perfecto Banishers, ni jugable ni narrativamente. Pero es único. Es humano. Y no muchos juegos pueden decir eso.

Il titolo, realizzato dallo studio di sviluppo francese Don’t Nod, è un eccezionale RPG d’azione di stampo occidentale con una componente narrativa parecchio intrigante e dalle tematiche horror molto coinvolgenti che si svolge in un setting affascinante, sempre diviso tra vita e morte, e in cui ogni scelta può essere determinante. Seguiremo insieme le vicende della coppia di cacciatori di spettri Rod ed Antea, anche amanti nella vita, e soprattutto nella morte, per scoprire che, a volte, l’Amore riesce a superare i limiti terreni.
