Double Dragon Gaiden is beholden to some unique ideas, and they’re fairly well-applied. You can experiment with mix-ups and tag team advantages, and multiplayer makes things altogether more enjoyable, although it’s restricted to local co-op. But, being associated with Double Dragon is arguably to its detriment. It’s a game that has secrets to uncover, twists to happen upon, and plenty of cash grinding and unlocking to do. While initially fun to work through, how many times you’ll feel encouraged to replay the campaign is questionable, especially with its overall pacing and neutered thrill of brutally knee-slamming someone in the face. Still, it’s certainly worthy of attention for beat 'em up fans looking for old things in new forms.

Double Dragon Gaiden focuses on replayability to its detriment. Solid combat mechanics give way to balance considerations made to justify all of the difficulty sliders and upgrade systems. If I had to pick between a game with a lot of “replayability” versus a game I simply like to play, the latter will win out every time. Double Dragon Gaiden isn’t far off from being enjoyable on the merits of the gameplay alone, but it’s far enough to consider going back to the dojo and polishing its Sou-Setsu-Ken technique.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons blends experimental elements with traditional Double Dragon gameplay. The roguelite design and the changing level structures encourage the player to complete the game multiple times to unlock all the additional characters to create experiences that feel less repetitive. This is a novel idea that works well for a couple playthroughs, but it can’t save things from feeling redundant forever. It’s fun for a couple playthroughs and does well at recreating the classic beat ’em up gameplay. Unfortunately, it also showcases the limitations of the genre, and even with the innovation approach the developers used to make subsequent play sessions different, most players will likely get their fill long before unlocking all thirteen additional fighters.

Muy posiblemente, la mejor entrega de la franquicia desde el juego original. Los pequeños problemas de ritmo no merman una experiencia nostálgica, divertida y mucho más variada de lo que parece en un principio.

Disney Illusion Island is a great all-ages platform-adventure that works hard to appeal to players of any skill level. Even those finding it too easy should be able to enjoy kicking back with the Disney cast, all of which are well animated with their personality shining through in every movement. The large number of areas can feel a bit samey after a while, and a few more enemy types would have been appreciated, but the escalating difficulty and variety of rooms and secrets makes it hard to get bored. The map tracking of collectibles makes it hard to resist going back to explore and clean up an area, and even after beating the game there can easily be a few sections left half-done. It’s a huge amount of fun to get Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy together in a single large platforming adventure, and Illusion Island doesn’t waste the opportunity to play with its cast of beloved characters.

F1 Manager 2023 improves on its predecessor in every way possible, with new driver development attributes, sprint races, more depth in car part development, more driver tactics, realistic tyre degradation, a whole new mode full of real-life scenarios, and more. The downtime between races is still a little dull, but it's finally a worthy pickup for every Formula One fan.

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is a very cutesy platforming game that does it’s job surprisingly well. The “speed tech” taught is simple but effective and the variety of level types was a pleasant surprise. The art style and the story are nothing to write home about and certainly won’t appeal to all but platforming fans who admire gameplay are encouraged to give the pirates a run for their money. It doesn’t really overstay it’s welcome (underwater levels aside) and the levels feel bite-sized which was nice. A fun game to just pick up and play for bits at a time.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a short, unexciting, and slow narrative adventure, full of unlikable characters and repetitive gameplay. Despite a great performance from Cara Gee as Drummer and a few engaging player choices, it is a waste of space.

Avevamo aspettative molto alte per The Expanse: a Telltale Series e possiamo dire che in buona parte sono state mantenute. Un'ottima scrittura dei personaggi, interpretazioni superlative e regia capace di brillare in alcuni momenti dell'avventura sono senza dubbio i punti di forza. Di contro però parliamo di una trama che mantiene una struttura schematica poggiata su binari parecchio visibili, in cui è facile leggere tra le righe. Abbiamo apprezzato molto la scelta di creare un'avventura narrativa quando, vista la natura del materiale, sarebbe stato infinitamente più facile creare un gioco di ruolo (i romanzi di The Expanse si basano su un universo narrativo creato per essere un GdR, ndr.) e apprezziamo lo sforzo. Tuttavia, confrontando la struttura di questi cinque episodi con altri lavori di Deck Nine e Telltale è un po' scoraggiante constatare che la formula non si è evoluta nel tempo. Inoltre, nel complesso, l'avventura risente di forti cali di ritmo. Sicuramente è apprezzabile la cura per i dettagli e una manciata di momenti davvero emozionanti, ma si ha un po' la sensazione di assistere ad una storia scritta con il freno a mano, e il sapere già come tutto andrà a finire smorza un po' le scelte del giocatore.

It is very easy to have a good time playing a few runs of Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons roguelike gauntlet of four levels and bosses. Jumping in and learning its satisfyingly punchy combat and long list of fun and unique playable characters that you can tag in for combos turns a somewhat shallow pond of an early game experience into an impressive lake of collaborative combat options. But things got a little too repetitive and frustrating before I even got my first clear thanks to the shallow enemy pool, few game-changing upgrades, a brutal difficulty spike if you choose to save the wrong boss for last, and lack of worthwhile unlockables to chase outside of new fighters.

Eravamo abbastanza scettici e invece Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons di cose da dire ne ha parecchie, e su diversi argomenti: come si valorizzano gli impatti in un picchiaduro, come si gestisce una struttura destinata a non esaurirsi nel giro di un paio d'ore, come si aggiunge spessore a un gameplay così classico e inflazionato. Per alcuni versi è assurdo che un gioco disegnato con così tanta attenzione mostri il fianco a un paio di mancanze tanto palesi, al punto da portarci a pensare che siano volute. E quindi niente, se vi piacciono i picchiaduro a scorrimento dovrete proprio spendere questi 24,99€.

Nadie esperaba un regreso de Double Dragon, pero tras jugar por varios días a esta entrega he de decir que ya mismo quiero ver una continuación. La gente de Secret Base parece haber dominado el balance entre la nostalgia y lo novedoso y se ha animado a meterse con una franquicia clásica, icónica en la historia de los videojuegos, y ha superado la prueba con muy buena nota. No tengas dudas, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons es uno de los mejores beat ’em ups de los últimos tiempos, y teniendo en cuenta la gran calidad que hemos tenido en el género en la actualidad, esto es más que un cumplido, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons es uno de los mejores beat ’em ups de los últimos tiempos
