There is something addictive and mindlessly fun about Minesweeper, which is why it’s been so popular over the years. But why would I want to download a $5 console installment when I can open six different versions for free on my computer and play them all as I type this? Minesweeper Flags works as advertised, so if you’re dying for the Minesweeper experience, you won’t be disappointed. But there's nothing new here that's really worth the download, multiplayer included.

Sim Animals è un titolo dedicato ai più giovani, realizzato con mestiere, anche se pecca in verve creativa. La gestione dell'ecosistema è ben strutturata ed i problemi nella precisione dei controlli non inficiano particolarmente il godimento del titolo, anche a causa del ritmo lento che permette di "prenderla con filosofia". Adatto a chi ama divertirsi in modo semplice, anche se un po' monotono, accontentandosi di un comparto tecnico funzionale ma non eccelso.

Silent Hill: Homecoming, a dispetto delle aspettative, si affaccia sul mercato come una produzione piuttosto mediocre. Per quanto coinvolgenti ed affascinanti, non bastano infatti stupende atmosfere e musiche azzeccatissime per reggere il peso di una produzione next gen. Il gameplay è pesantemente minato da un sistema di controlli impreciso, da un battle system poco curato, e dall'estrema linearità dell'avventura. La storyline, per quanto discretamente affascinante, non è sorretta da una recitazione digitale credibile e coinvolgente, né tantomeno da una sceneggiatura bilanciata e redatta con criterio. Il comparto tecnico, certamente figlio dell'inesperienza, non risulta pienamente all'altezza delle produzioni odierne, specie a meno di un mese dal debutto di Resident Evil 5, almeno graficamente su un altro pianeta. Come già accennato in precedenza tutto si regge insomma sulle atmosfere di gioco che riescono, nonostante tutto, a rendere la decina d'ore di gameplay piuttosto godibile. La nuova creatura Konami rimane quindi nel limbo: non da avere a tutti i costi ma nemmeno da sconsigliare definitivamente; una gradita forma di intrattenimento per gli amanti del terrore psicologico.

Très présent sur DS, Bomberman a le mérite de savoir se renouveler sans pour autant perdre de vue sa composante essentielle, à savoir son efficacité diabolique dans les matches en multijoueur. Ce Bomberman 2 nous propose de remplir des missions variées tout en personnalisant librement notre héros à l'aide des éléments trouvés en cours de jeu. Une idée qui relance bien le concept de base et qui confère un réel intérêt aux parties en solo.

Ultimate Band sait se mettre en valeur via deux ou trois bonnes idées qui l'aident à se démarquer de la concurrence. Cela dit, son gameplay se rapproche sans doute un peu trop de Guitar Rock Tour et sa playlist manque de titres et manque surtout de qualité et d'authenticité. Il restera une bonne alternative à ceux qui veulent s'affronter en multi ou créer leurs propres musiques !

Flower dépasse le cadre du jeu vidéo tel qu'on l'entend habituellement : il s'agit d'une expérience poétique. La console est ici utilisée comme un vecteur pour vous transmettre de fortes émotions et vous immerger dans un monde onirique. Il est certain que ce titre ne plaira pas à tout le monde, mais ceux qui aiment sortir des sentiers battus trouveront là une véritable œuvre d'art disponible à un prix modique. Vous sentez-vous prêt à plonger dans le rêve d'une fleur pour en revenir avec des étoiles dans les yeux ?

2009 got started shakily itself, as this year's January didn't look much better than last's. But now that we're into February, and now that we've seen the first fresh wave of solid games like The House of the Dead: Overkill, Deadly Creatures and Tenchu: Shadow Assassins make it out to market, we can breathe a little easier -- 2009 will certainly end up being a better year for Wii than 2008 was. As for the final fate of 2008, well, hopefully we can have a little fun with it now that we're gaining some distance from those dreadful days. And as for the worst game of 2008, well, Action Girlz Racing really is my pick. It's a horrid product full of terrible track design, lifeless characters and glitched programming that's only service to its developer and publisher is to make all their other bargain bin games look better by comparison. So let's send it off with the score seemingly most appropriate for '08 -- 0.8. Good riddance, 2008. You won't be missed.

It’s a real shame that WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 has such unorthodox controls. There is a lot of game to be had here, but the stylus controls for the sake of stylus controls make it hard to get to.

Nonostante alcuni difetti grafici, una sceneggiatura e personaggi scontati, e lo scarso coinvolgimento iniziale dovuto alle modalità di narrazione della trama troppo frammentaria e confusa, F.E.A.R. 2 se la cava egregiamente. Grazie soprattutto ad un gameplay classico ma perfetto nelle dinamiche, alla gestione e diversificazione delle armi, ad una buona varietà di situazioni ed all'IA di qualità superiore alla media. Inoltre si farà apprezzare per la spettacolarità degli scontri a fuoco e per il taglio quasi cinematografico di alcune delle visioni o degli eventi catastrofici. Peccato che Monolith non abbia saputo dosare meglio l'effetto bullet time, che di fatto limita notevolmente il potenziale di F.E.A.R. 2 come first person shooter tattico. Un gioco divertente e coinvolgente, che però risulta quasi identico al suo predecessore, rinnovato quindi solo nell'aspetto grafico. Ma questo non è necessariamente un difetto...

Dragon Quest V is a must-play RPG, pure and simple. By extension, that means that Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is also a must-play RPG, though I can’t help but wish we were getting it sooner than 17 years late, and with a bit more fanfare and polish. The core game is simply incredible, offering some of the best story, gameplay, and customization available in the Super NES era, and most of the DQ series to boot. The DS version is the only one we’ve got, and while I wouldn’t go as far as to call it the definitive version without having a chance to experience the original, the updated script is very well done, things like the fan-missed party chat option (removed from DQIV on DS) is now back, and the sheer amount of impressive gameplay found in the nearly doubled in size monster battle system is immense. The 3D design is great, the presentation is top notch, holding up what was originally done with the Super Famicom version and amplified by the PS2 remake in Japan. There are still issues with the game as a current-day DS title though, such a very plain interface, a bland top screen during battles, and an archaic menu system that really makes the game feel dated. The source material for this one is nothing short of amazing, and hands-down one of the best classic RPGs ever created. The DS conversion of that source material – while still very commendable – could have been even better after seeing some of Square’s other works on the platform. With that being said, DQV: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is a must-own game for anyone that calls themselves an RPG fan – it’s just that good.
