Gears of War is a must-have game, pure and simple. Epic has effectively created a new gaming universe, and the rich story of planet Sera holds its own with the likes of Hyrule, City 17 and the Mushroom-friggin'-Kingdom. A game so gorgeous, both visually and aurally, that is this fun to play comes along only a handful of times a console generation. There is a healthy learning curve to the cover system, but those who master it will find Epic's twisting and turning and rolling an exciting change-up in the shooter genre, a blend of fast-arcade action and basic, tactical maneuvering. The Insane difficulty level gives Gears legs months after you've finished the relatively-short campaign, and even with a friend it is an impossible, irresistible challenge. Versus is a one-trick pony, consisting of a team deathmatch with three basic variations, but damn, that mode is fun. Downloadable content is on the way, says Epic, but as it stands today, we are left wanting more. Bottom line: Gears of War is the special kind of game that makes you feel like a kid again, a sadistic little bastard obsessed with gore and chainsaws.

Don't worry, I'm not trying to fool you -- if you want the true Downhill Jam experience, don't bother with the Game Boy Advance version and stick with the Nintendo DS or Wii renditions. The GBA game is a limited experience with a bunch of problems, but in practice the game's not as bad as the first ten or so minutes will lead you to believe. If all you own is a GBA then sure, give this a shot...but otherwise, put that 30 bucks to better use on the bigger and better systems.

Malgré un tableau enthousiasmant, Gitaroo-Man Lives! n'est pas sans défaut. Le faible nombre de niveaux en solo (10) joue clairement en sa défaveur. Moins de deux heures seront nécessaires pour faire tomber le rideau final. Évidemment, il est possible de refaire les niveaux pour obtenir un S, c'est-à-dire la note ultime. De plus, une fois le jeu terminé en "facile" ou en "normal", un mode "maestro" se débloque. Ce dernier est quasiment impossible : les notes sont plus nombreuses et la moindre erreur est fatale. A plusieurs, le jeu de Koei est sympathique. Le système "jeu de combat" est bien adapté au duel à deux grâce au Wifi/Lan. Nouveauté de la version PSP, le mode "duo" permet d'allier vos forces contre deux nouveaux boss. Mais là encore, vous aurez vite fait le tour des chansons disponibles. Enfin, les joueurs possédant déjà l'opus PS2 seront également déçus par le manque de nouveauté. Toutefois, il serait dommage pour les autres de se priver d'un aussi bon jeu de rythme qui se prête merveilleusement bien au format de poche. Son ambiance décalé assortie d'un gameplay inventif font de Gitaroo-Man Lives!, un indispensable de la portable de Sony.

"This is the season". Questa è la stagione: di certo non sono parole citate a caso, perchè quest'anno FIFA ha generato un'impennata qualitativa verticale, con una versione old-gen di alto livello e una next-gen che prova a rivoluzionare il genere da troppo tempo legato a basi antiquate. Azzardando un paragone, FIFA 07 per 360 potrebbe essere l'Half Life 2 degli sportivi: sottovalutare l'introduzione della nuova tecnologia legata alla fisica e alle animazioni sarebbe un errore da parte di qualsiasi videogiocatore, perchè si appresta a divenire standard futuro per gli sviluppatori intenzionati a raggiungere il massimo del realismo. Nonstante ciò è innegabile che nel complesso il titolo è ancora imperfetto, offrendo una giocabilità forse acerba a causa della nuova impostazione (esempio è l'intelligenza artificiale, buonissima in molti casi, a volte risulta inferiore alla versione old-gen) e una riproduzione dei giocatori decisamente approssimativa nella maggior parte dei casi, con le stelle più famose identiche alle loro controparti reali tralasciando invece il resto dei giocatori internazionali. Per un appassionato della serie o semplicemente amante dei videogiochi sportivi l'acquisto è d'obbligo, anche grazie al gioco online senza lag e 4vs4, che allunga ulteriormente la longevità del titolo. A tutti gli altri, "PES-sari" compresi, consigliamo di provare il gioco con mano, perchè potrebbe offrire un'esperienza più interessante (e divertente, perchè il gioco lo è) rispetto a quanto si possa credere.

For all its undeniable charm and nostalgic worth, The Settlers II is never really more than a retro retread that will probably only appeal to those who remember the series fondly.
