Ball x Pit is fantastic, all the way down to the fake CRT filter it subtly uses over its chunky graphics. It’s a masterful game, feeling as if it had a vision and executed on it perfectly. It also manages to ensure to not break a fundamental rule of the rogue-like genre, in that no run feels wasted. Not once during the game’s most manic failures or disaster runs did I feel as if my time was being wasted in any capacity. I didn’t get many resources or gold, but I hit retry and was back in the game in about 30 seconds. That next run saw me beat the level’s boss. I felt invincible. Ball x Pit is so good.

I’ve let out a lot of rage playing DOOM: The Dark Ages. It’s cathartic in the most bloodthirsty way, and I can’t stress how nice it has been to just simply switch off my brain and get stuck into a bunch of demons. It scratches the same itch I have when I’m watching a particularly energetic ice hockey match, where the biff gets real and the atmosphere is so electric that it gets your blood pumping hard enough to hear it in your ears. The game may not be perfect, but it is a really meaty fiesta of fighting. Tearing demons asunder will never not be cool as hell, and for that reason alone, I can easily see myself coming back to DOOM: The Dark Ages time and time again – especially after a particularly stressful week.

Without giving too much away, the deeper into Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 you get, the more you find yourself being encompassed in a whirlwind of difficult emotions. The beauty and balance of the game is that even in the most unexpected moments, there’s the potential for just a single line or discovery to hit you with a sizeable gut punch. While it’s not quite perfect, this is a really stunning showing from developer Sandfall Interactive. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had me feeling my own mortality (as someone in their early 30s, perhaps it hit a little close to home) and man, I love when a game has the narrative gumption to do that.
