Like Diabolical Mind’s previous efforts, it’s the play-cycle that truly elevates the game. Scrambling through floors until you escape with just a sliver of health and using your D-tokens to purchase new characters, weapons, and supplies has a compulsive quality. Despite being in the middle of a more sophisticated role-playing game, I found myself revisiting Demon’s Tier+, eager for its next reward. Despite unassuming, pixel-art visuals and a soundtrack that loops a bit too frequently, I was hooked on the game’s drip-feed of dividends.

Nearly two decade on, Western players can finally enjoy the inaugural entry to the Utawarerumono franchise. Although some elements of Prelude to the Fallen still feel a bit dated, the game bring the original game in line with Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth, solidifying the satisfying series. With an adept localization that’s just a hair away from Atlus’ work, engrossing characters, and a plotline that scales outstandingly, it’s great to see geographical parity for this remarkable property.

Infinite – Beyond the Mind undoubtedly draws from the classics. It’s clear developer Emilie Coyo studied the pantheon of action-platforming and pursued the exhilarate of a being a powerful protagonist who is capable to annihilating complete armies. There are enough issues that prevent the game from joining this elite tier of genre greats. But none of these blemishes are bad enough to bypass the title.

With a lot of luck and a few smart decisions, you can ride a glorious wave of fortune in Billion Road. But the message here is that success is always temporary. Inevitably, a monster or even friend will leave you penniless. It’s a tough life-lesson that makes for quite an amusing game.
