SteamWorld Build blends Sim City-style building with Dungeon Keeper-style protection. Unlike some of its peers, the game is delightfully laid back- at least on the lower difficulty level, making for an enjoyable outing as a civil engineer. But don’t expect much longevity. However, the developers’ resourcefulness doesn’t extend across the game’s five settings, making for a fun, but tragically fleeting career.

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Yu Suzuki’s arcade games helped propel gaming into the third dimension. Coin-ops like Space Harrier, Out Run, and After Burner felt innovative, each dazzling the senses as they tested reflexes for a few fleeting moments. Air Twister, the pioneer’s latest, does little to advance the basic formula. Expectedly. It looks and sounds better and attempts to inject long-term incentive. But this feels like the arcade pioneer coasting rather than truly tapping into his creative spirit.

A few minor imperfections are found in Cuisineer’s delectable amalgam of dungeon-based action and restaurant management. But these wayward flavors aren’t enough to spoil the piquancy that BattleBrew Productions has cooked up. With lovely art and refreshingly relaxed pacing, this is a dish that fans of cozy games will savor.

At first, Aged Through Blood’s blend of Trails-style bike tricks, slow-motion gunplay, and exploration seems shrewd. But the mixture of mechanics eventually grows laborious across Laika’s 10- to 12-hour trek. If developer Brainwash Gang could get the action to match the quality of the exposition, I’d gladly ride again with this mama coyote.

With its mix of a mythological setting, frenzied action, and the regular reward of perks, Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur is poised for comparison with Hades. For some, the approach might be a bit too similar. But give Arthur a chance to revive Camelot and rescue his devoted brethren, and you’ll discover an engaging expedition that offers some interesting variations – especially with your weaponry.

Undoubtedly, Silent Hope demonstrates potential. Delving deeper into a hostile chasm recalls Riko’s harrowing descent from Made in Abyss, while the action-driven combat evokes Diablo’s loot-driven formula. Had Hope’s exposition and execution come closer to the impact of either of these properties, it would have been a recommended experience. Instead, guiding these seven characters downward too often feels routine.

NIS didn’t want to completely remove Disgaea 6’s Demonic Intelligence system, but here auto-battling’s role has been significantly reduced. Now, you’ll have to spend a resource known as poltergas when attempting to level up your party members. Additionally, D7 provides a bit more player control when programming the actions of your team- prioritizing ally units that most need healing or attacking weaker to reduce the number of incoming attacks. And while pre-launch online community is rather modest, the ability to build a custom team, program the behavior of each member, and fight asynchronous opponents offers some intriguing possibilities. Let’s hope the developers are quick to quash any potential cheating, as that could undermine things. One of Disgaea’s biggest draws is the sense of freedom. Feel like breaking the system to forge a stress-free path through the 30-hour main campaign? Simply loiter in the item world for a few hours to create god-level gear. Looking for a challenge? Beyond managing a rag-tag team of scrappy Prinnies, there’s always the possibility of building a single celestial hostess to scrap toward the generous post-game content. Given that there are now 45 different classes to pick from (the new maiko distracts male characters), there are a multitude of different ways to help Hinomoto. Mostly, you’ll have to do the work on your own this time, which is how Disgaea should be.

Whether you’re a Type-Moon follower with Saber wallpaper on your phone or just someone who appreciate virtual tourism, Fate/Samurai Remnant’s journey to Keian-Era Japan will delight. There’s a storyline that doesn’t assume familiarity with previous works that erupts in regular doses of intense, action-driven combat. But of all, the writing is a cut above any previous works set in the Fate multiverse.

Eleven years on, Legend of Nayuta still looks surprisingly modern. At least some of that stems from Peter ‘Durante’ Thoman’s team at PH3 working their customary sorcery. Not only does the title enjoy a solid sixty frame-per-second framerate, but fidelity has also been boosted, and even audio quality demonstrates a palpable improvement. The latter is especially important given the quality of Falcom Sound Team JDK’s work, with Boundless supplying an abundance of beguiling tracks. Although they tell some ambitious stories, Falcom’s mainline Trails games habitually demand familiarity from players. But The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is one of those marvelous exceptions. The game asks little more than for you to befriend its affable cast and appreciate its punchy real-time combat. Anyone with even a passing interest in action role-playing, should pay attention to Boundless’ appeal.

While a multitude of titles have paid homage to SNES-era role-playing times, Sea of Stars is one of the few efforts that truly understands what makes the source material so beloved. Charmingly wholesome and aesthetically adept, Sabotage Studio’s follow-up to The Messenger will keep you beguiled through its blissful 30- (or so) hour campaign.
