Smite's unique camera angle alone is enough to set it apart from other MOBAs, and developer Hi-Rez didn't stop there. Each map is polished, every God looks and sounds great, and exceptional Match of the Day modes offer plenty of variety. Some late-game balance issues aside, Smite’s divine execution of innovative ideas make it a worthy contender.

Goat Simulator isn’t much of a game, but it’s a hell of a good time. The small but dense map is packed with tons of jokes and bugs that should be seen rather than talked about, and there’s at least a few hours’ worth of entertainment in goofing around with the jetpack alone. It’s a clever interactive spoof of all the broken game physics we’ve seen in open worlds – almost like a greatest hits album of all the ridiculous bugs that pop up in serious games like Skyrim or Assassin’s Creed, except embraced and celebrated in a world that’s made to be broken.

To be explicitly clear, if you don’t enjoy MMORPGs, you probably won’t enjoy The Elder Scrolls Online. Its strong character progression and combat systems better suit the offline Elder Scrolls games than in most MMOs, but it’s very much a game about adventuring with other players. As a fan of both MMORPGs and the Elder Scrolls series, I found it to be one of the most rewarding games in the genre in years. Even while it’s troubled by some extremely annoying bugs and will probably never look great, I’ve loved my time questing through Tamriel, and I look forward to logging back in soon. With tons of things to do, things to make, and areas to explore, Atelier Escha & Logy is a nice fusion of alchemy, adventure, and tactics. It doesn't offer a rich story or complex characters, but it does include hours of crafting fun, fast turn-based combat, and engaging time management.

While BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is, ultimately, a new version of the same game that we’ve had the last four years, there’s quite a bit here to sink your teeth into whether you’re a grizzled veteran, or a curious outsider checking out BlazBlue for the first time. As ever, its beautiful art and rocking heavy metal soundtrack serve as great complements to the fun, fast-paced fights. The new arrivals to its existing roster of wholly unique playable fighters, along with its plentiful single-player modes and exceptional online play, makes for a whole lot to explore and enjoy.

World of Tanks is a rare combination of hardcore attitude and pick-up-and-play accessibility that’s as effective on the Xbox as it has been on the PC. Jumping in and out of multiplayer matches that reward quick reflexes and steady aim is made more thoughtful with consideration of armor facings and treads. The console version is missing many of the elements of the PC version, not least of which is the full roster of tanks, but the action is rewarding, fun, and free for at least the first several hours before grinding does its best to tempt you to spend money.

TowerFall Ascension is a fun and approachable battle royale that makes excellent use of its deceptively simple retro looks and classic arcade platforming style. Every second is a mad scramble for ammo, powerups, and survival that, while sadly limited to local play only, kept my group of four players glued to their controllers with its highly competitive action. Even the single-player and co-op Quest mode is worth playing to practice your skills before going into battle.

Pokemon Battle Trozei doesn’t use Pokemon as window dressing alone. The standard match-three gameplay is layered with strategy that uses to the main series’ established rock-paper-scissor combat system, but the UI’s lack of information leaves those without an encyclopedic knowledge of Pokemon games at a disadvantage. While filling out the Pokedex isn’t as rewarding thanks to that same general lack of expected info, the task is made much more fun when done with friends in the local-only multiplayer.

This unique crossover is a powerful draw for fans of either series, but it doesn’t make the most of its potential. It sacrifices some of both series’ challenge, and the alternate-universe story feels like a missed opportunity where there could have been more meaningful interaction between the worlds of Wright and Layton. The witty dialogue writing, however, is as charming and enjoyable as ever.

Luftrausers is a carefully engineered game with finely polished mechanics under its simple graphics. Each round is a breathless rush, every death painless enough to make restarting from scratch absolutely no hardship. Don't expect great depth or long-term thrills, but the action while it lasts is a master of both second-by-second action, and the structures that effortlessly stretch it out into a good few hours without it overstaying its welcome.

The core ideas behind MOBAs make for satisfying, team-focused gameplay, so it’s excellent that Ronimo brought them to consoles in an intelligent way. Awesomenauts Assemble! is fast, simple to learn, and great way to game with friends.

If a computer generated an elevator pitch for a game based on random, stereotypical gamer interests, it might spit out a jumble like Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. And while that could totally still be awesome, this experience is so mired in frustration that even a few well-timed jokes can’t save the day. Gaiden games have always been challenging, but they’ve also always been fair. Yaiba is not. Instead, it’s unbalanced and arbitrarily punitive, and after the first few hours, it’s not worth putting up with anymore.

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is a short but challenging game, and those willing to cast aside conventional expectations will find a lot more here than first glance might suggest. While I’m unconvinced that Kojima is quite ready to tackle more controversial narrative material, for the most part Ground Zeroes represents a new, more sophisticated era for Metal Gear. A Big Boss/Snake adventure has never looked or played better, and in it lies incredible promise for its enormous big brother.

One Piece: Romance Dawn is an attempt to fit a vast amount of story into a concise RPG, but the result is flimsy and underdeveloped. The turn-based battle is fun in a very average way, and the rest of the experience tempted me to put down my 3DS and just watch the One Piece anime instead. It’s not a complete disaster by any means, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to play a condensed version when the source material is readily available.

It’s always a good sign when a game’s only major downside is that there just isn’t enough of it. The elegant simplicity of Hearthstone’s rules, its impressive attention to detail and personality, and the true viability of playing completely for free make it easy to fall under its spell and get blissfully lost in the depths of its strategic possibilities. But, paradoxically, the way the store works and the lack of a trading economy means it’s easy to feel disappointed when you do spend money. Hearthstone’s an amazing collectible card game today, and if Blizzard can deliver a steady stream of fresh content, I’m down to log at least another 1,000 matches in the months and years to come.
