We’ve all spent a lot of time playing games where the goal is to kill things and break stuff down. It’s nice to finally play a game about building something up. Turning a pristine landscape into grand palaces and irrigation systems using your own two hands while things try to kill you isn’t just an amazingly rewarding gaming experience, it’s a clever retelling of human history. In a way, this is what we’re all instinctively driven to do, and Minecraft captures it brilliantly.

OlliOlli only does one thing, but it does it with style and grace. The trick system, while initially off-putting, strikes a near perfect balance of technique, creativity, and precision without coming off as overwhelming or obtuse. Daily Grind and Spots modes showcase its strengths well, but quite literally grinding out the career mode can feel like a slog at times thanks to the limited scope of its trick and stage variety. Hopefully, we get a sequel that builds on its successes and realizes its full potential. But for now, I’ll enjoy what’s here: a technically pure skateboarding game played to a deeply evocative soundscape.

For a multitude of reasons, Aveline is the kind of character I’d like to see more of in gaming, and watching her flounder through this game all over again hurt. I wanted to see her tale succeed, but Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD is just too lacking in too many areas to make it happen. There’s no one thing to point to as overtly broken; it simply dies by a thousand tiny cuts. Its craft is sloppy, its design remains shackled by ill-conceived new ideas, as well as the limitations of the platform it hails from. It’s the definitive version of a game that had very little going for it in the first place.

The Banner Saga deserves commendation for the strength of its art and music experience alone, which shatters conventions. That experience, in turn, complements a bleak story of a world teetering before its fall, where the harshness of the Scandinavian landscape mirrors the plight of mutually distrustful refugees. It's also a tough tactical RPG that rewards thought and careful strategy, although it stumbles a bit in explaining systems beyond its combat.

Though on the surface it looks like just another “me too” indie game seeking to ride the coattails of Minecraft’s success, Terraria expands on the familiar sandbox gameplay with a greater emphasis on combat and adventure that proves very satisfying. Fresh elements – like an absurdly expansive crafting system, a broad scope of monsters to battle, and a slick retro 2D presentation – make it a stand out among the pack. Taking Terraria with you on-the-go puts an exciting spin on the absorbing formula, and the Vita version thankfully doesn't skimp on the goods. There's no depth sacrificed here. If anything, improved controls and amenities like the touch interface make a big difference over playing the PC or console versions.

A bright platformer is just what we needed on Xbox One and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood’s vibrant setting and terrain-altering puzzles deliver. But the adventure doesn’t quite feel next-gen. With unintuitive controls, puzzle mechanics that’ve been done better elsewhere, and a story with the depth of a coloring book, it’s hard to stay invested in this short adventure.

Nintendo knows the power of its back catalog, and that power isn’t always used for good. (See: Nintendoland, a milquetoast minigame collection inspired by some of the very same games featured in Retro Remix.) So it's especially cool to see Nintendo get behind a project like NES Remix, which both honors classic games and rips them apart. It’s a clever and challenging way to experience the classics without just retreading old ground. The possibilities for expanding the Remix series are so unbelievably great, too. I'm ready for the next batch now: Punch-Out!!, Kid Icarus and Metroid were cruelly ignored this time. And what about Super NES Remix? Game Boy Remix? Nintendo 64 Remix?!! But I digress.

It is surprising how much The Walking Dead: Season 2’s finale accomplishes in just two hours. Each scene studies a set of characters, analyzing their goals, their nature, and what they’ve become in the two years since the undead started roaming. No Going Back poses challenging questions about people you love, people you might be using, and those you might loathe. It is, ultimately, a test of these characters’ wills, and a look at each of their limits. Telltale Games crafted brilliant no-win scenarios for Clementine, and the outcome of each is a result of what your Clementine is willing to say, lose, or do for herself or her family. Sometimes, those two can’t be reconciled, which leads to devastating conclusions. This is perhaps the most heartbreaking and tense episode of anything Telltale has ever made. How Clementine braces for the impact of everything in front of her is up to you -- and where that takes her left me in awe.

Saint Seiya : Brave Soldiers is a disappointing effort made even more unappealing when compared to the abundance of quality fighting games currently available for fans of the genre. Almost every element is incredibly simple, creating gameplay that can be wholly experienced in the span of minutes, lending itself to tedium with each minute further. The battles are shallow, and it tells a story that can only be appreciated by fans of the anime. Its presentation goes wrong in every way. Even lovers of Saint Seiya will find little to enjoy in Brave Soldiers.

Air Conflicts: Vietnam a terribly executed arcade flight game. Though it gets the fundamentals of flying right, and aircraft are reasonably well represented, the tiny combat areas, repetitive mission design, and generation-before-last terrain graphics are a gaming quagmire from which I cannot withdraw quickly enough.

Doki-Doki Universe’s heart is in a great place, and its charm and startlingly accurate personality analysis provide a completely novel experience the likes of which I’ve never seen before. Its slant on side quests and completionism did, at first, scratch an itch for me, but Doki soon suffers from its sheer repetition, especially because it lacks any sort of tangible challenge. Doki-Doki Universe began to stumble from exceptional to acceptable as the hours wore on.

The Amazing Spider-Man has some seriously fun gameplay, but it can only really be appreciated on other platforms. Once bugs start popping up, the experience on Vita starts to become as infected as the civilians Spider-Man fights to rescue. Audio issues, frame-rate problems, and even a few game-crashing bugs all tarnish this otherwise-decent game. There is very little reason to pick up this game for your Vita.

I’ve already lost a lot of sleep to Peggle 2. Its Siren song of “just one more board” is difficult to ignore even late at night, and during the day anyone who walks by and sees it wants me to pass the controller to take a crack at besting my score. Peggle 2 is one-button joy. You think, you aim, you fire, and you sit back and watch as massive combos and bright popping colors take over. That it’s such a joyful sequel to an all-time classic stretches my grin from ear to ear, just like most of the rest of Peggle 2.

The Guided Fate Paradox suffers from uneven difficulty and customization that could charitably be called "byzantine," but it manages to overcome many of these flaws with its over-the-top sense of humor and rewarding strategy. Though it's often unforgiving, it's a good RPG, and a fine addition to the PlayStation 3 library.
