Aliens: Colonial Marines looks like Aliens, and sounds like Aliens, but unfortunately it just doesn’t feel like Aliens. Instead, it feels indistinguishable from almost every shooter you’ve played in the past twenty years. There are some feelings of nostalgia to be enjoyed, but it soon wears off and all that is left is some bog standard run ‘n’ gun action that brings little of note to the FPS table. Aliens: Colonial Marines has definitely been crafted with a lot of love for the franchise, it just needed a little more polish and a lot more imagination.

In this world full of distractions, we could all probably use some help with our strained attention spans. Brain Age: Concentration Training is admirable and timely by taking up that task as the series’ new goal, and I could see this game actually making a difference for those who dedicate themselves to regular use of its activities. This sequel’s real challenge, though, is going to be keeping players’ attentions long enough to be able to improve them, as its restrictions on daily play time, occasional handwriting misrecognition and unnecessary demonic imagery are all obstacles that could cause trainees to set down the game and never return to it. If you think you’d have enough concentration to be able to endure those quirks, though, Concentration Training could very well help you overcome the many distractions in your life.

Proteus is a very different sort of interactive experience. Maybe, by your definition, it's not even a game. But that doesn't matter. It's a joyous experiment in exploration from start to finish – even if it is a very, very short-lived one. Are you tired of shooting terrorists and zombies all the time? Consider Proteus a much-needed vacation.

Naruto: Powerful Shippuden is a breath of fresh air for both longtime fans of the show and brawlers in general. It’s as interesting outside of its missions as in them, with unique experience-point investing and gambling mechanics that future games in this genre should look to for inspiration. And, in adapting the wacky Rock Lee spin-off instead of the core series itself, it finds a unique, previously untapped appeal, as these characters are often at their best when they focus on simple brawling.

The combat system and the world Visceral has crafted in Dead Space 3 is so expertly built and well-wrought, I found myself consciously overlooking my main criticisms, because I love playing it and spending time with it. This is an important distinction to make: loving a game while being fully aware of its faults. Dead Space 3, when played the way I've been playing it, on New Game+, is an engrossing and satisfying experience. But it requires ignoring the bad story and the numbing to-do lists. It then becomes all about building up the most powerful, best outfitted Isaac you can imagine. It’s here and here alone that Dead Space 3 succeeds, mostly in spite of itself.

Omerta's mix of management simulation and top-down turn-based combat in the style of XCOM brims with potential but it suffers from an almost total absence of risk or failure even on the hardest difficulty. There's charm and a good soundtrack in store here, but it quickly loses its appeal amid gameplay that never stops feeling as though you're working your way through a tutorial. At $40, that makes for an offer you should have no trouble refusing.

What’s perhaps most striking about playing a Sly Cooper game late in the PS3 generation is how it proves that the brand itself is still relevant, as is the mascot-based 3D platformer. While similar PlayStation series like Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank have either disappeared entirely or gone in new and strange directions respectively, the fourth Sly Cooper game is true to itself. The decision to remain true to what made Sly great in the first place is daring in an age where the 3D platformer can come off as a dinosaur. Sure, Sly 4 has ridiculous load times, occasionally frustrating gameplay and some bizarre, archaic motion controls, but don’t let that deter you: Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is a worthy game to add to your library on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. It does so many things right and harkens back to a different time in gaming while modernizing the experience for a new generation. It may not wow you like some of the best PlayStation exclusives have in the past, but needless to say, the wait for a continuation of the Sly saga was officially worth it.

Antichamber has some of the more clever puzzles of any game I’ve played. It doesn’t have much in the way of personality, and its bizarre ending left me wondering why it was included at all, but it makes the act of exploration utterly thrilling. Each step becomes a chance to learn something new about Antichamber’s world, and you gain new skills and encounter unique and rewarding puzzles right up to the end. If you own a PC and can run an Unreal Engine 3 title, then you owe it to yourself to experience Antichamber. I wager you’ll get plenty of mental exercise and maybe learn a thing or two about life and have a blast while doing it.

Skulls’ hardcore appeal may be limited, but for those looking for a simple, easy to understand turn-based strategy title, it's really solid. You're not going to find a deep game you're going to play forever. In fact, there are definitely some glaring issues in the way that it plays. But you know what? That's just fine. There's a highly likeable campaign that's more than worth the price of admission.

I’m nearly 80 puzzles into Dokuro, and I’m still having a blast. In fact, it’s been hard to put down. I’m far from being the most talented puzzle gamer around, but Dokuro, no matter how difficult it can be at times, is rarely frustrating. Getting through each puzzle is a rewarding mixture of trial-and-error gameplay mixed with a little bit of luck, and watching the princess crouch down to pick the lone white flower at the end of each puzzle, signifying the completion of the task at hand, is a fitting reward for a job well done. Dokuro is another sign that the PlayStation Vita’s library is strengthening significantly as of late, and at $19.99, it’s an absolute steal. You should buy it, play it and enjoy the cerebral and thoughtful experience it provides.

In a way, assigning a score to Book of Shadows feels arbitrary. It’s such a niche experience that you probably already know whether or not you want to play it. Does Japanese horror porn sound appealing to you? Well then this is right up your alley, and you’re probably going to enjoy it regardless of its relative quality as a game. If not, this probably isn’t going to convert you. Despite its best efforts, the storytelling just isn’t strong enough.

Delightfully, The Cave is, in fact, a pure, puzzle-solving adventure game rife with funny lines and chuckle-inducing non sequiturs despite trying to disguise itself as a side-scrolling platformer. It doesn’t stay with you the way Gilbert’s classics did, however. You experience it, you enjoy it, but you’re not likely to catch yourself daydreaming about unforgettable sequences in The Cave the way you fondly recall Monkey 1’s insult sword-fighting or Monkey 2’s endlessly debatable ending. Maybe that’s because the story is mostly told through scattered comic-book-style panels or because the only real dialogue comes from The Cave itself and not the seven characters. But being a Ron Gilbert-built adventure game in the modern era, it’s wholly unique in the market and your game library will be a better place with it included.

There is a small amount of stupid nostalgic fun to swiping your screen and seeing 30+ retro characters drawn from the entire Final Fantasy franchise jump into action. But due to its insulting in-game purchases and inexcusably mindless & repetitive gameplay, this is an very disappointing black mark on Square-Enix’s long-running franchise.

I’d personally suggest you give the game a chance, whether you’ve got reservations going in or not. Tokyo Crash Mobs is a creative reinvention of a 15-year-old puzzler design that isn’t perfect, but is certainly unique enough to earn your attention – especially since it’s only a $5.99 download. And if it doesn’t go on to become the eShop’s next bestseller? Well, it’ll still go down in history as one of the weirdest games to ever wear the Nintendo name.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable features the same flaws and polish issues that marred the original, but also has the same addictive combat that leaves you yearning for more. The lack of split-screen co-op may seem like a downer, but the new options for local and online cooperative play for up to four players is a great alternative. With a few new levels and an awesome new playable character, 2017 Portable works as not only a good introduction to this flawed classic, but also as an excuse to play it all over again.
