Fallout Shelter is at its best early on: when your fledgling vault is barely able to scrape by, and every raider attack has the potential to topple your fragile society. Once your vault is firmly established, all fear of losing, and thus the fun, fades away. Combine this with a lack of compelling longterm goals, and you have an experience that’s fun for a few days, but lacks long-term appeal.

Despite it being born from originality, I hope other developers copy Her Story’s blueprint. Not the exact story, of course, but the idea that people who play games are smart, and can take on tough, intellectual work if you give them a story worth working for. With a strong script, great use of FMV, and a simple yet empowering core game mechanic, Her Story is the most unique game I’ve played in years.

Beyond the nice upgraded graphics and framerate, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition puts all of its energy into adding three great new characters and fighting styles to Capcom’s over-the-top action game. Trish, Lady, and Vergil are the best reasons to pick up this special edition, and they’re playable in every mode. It’s a bit disappointing that Capcom didn’t take this opportunity to delete the bad points while adding in new good stuff, which means that the backtracking and annoying puzzles that pushed some people away in 2008 will do so again in this edition.

If you have an affinity for any of the four films recapped within, LEGO Jurassic World will be a worthwhile visit. Seeing the series' iconic moments recreated with cute figurines is a treat, and each of the four campaigns is fast-paced enough that completing the entire franchise in its brick-based form will only take roughly seven to eight hours, which is not much longer than the combined film running times (and amounts to brisk mini-campaigns of two hours or less each). Plus, you can tackle this one with a friend and run around as a raptor or Jeff Goldblum. Just beware that there are a few pests inhabiting the island and the line to the best parts of the park may be a bit tough to navigate.

There’s a handful of really great levels in Yoshi’s Woolly World, which makes the most of its setting and choice of character. The world is exactly what I expected, thematically and in terms of structure: sand, snow, clouds, and fire, punctuated by bosses holed-up in themed fortresses. It’s incredibly familiar, but the imaginative and attractive art style makes it feel fresh and appealing. Outside of those great few levels, Woolly World is a more forgettable and fragmented experience. Cool mechanics are cooked up, but they’re dropped into levels which never realise their full potential and fixate more on unearthing frustrating collectibles.

If this is in fact the last Rocksteady-developed Batman game, the series will end on a high note. Arkham Knight is the biggest Batman game yet, not just in map size, but in the wide range of different types of gameplay, and its collection of characters. The addition of tank combat thematically clashes with everything Batman stands for, but it is fun, and having access to the Batmobile for the first time gives us a new world of possibilities for interacting with Gotham City. Arkham Knight is an outstanding game on almost every level.

When I’m having a good time in ARK, I’m having a really good time. The problem is that those moments are usually one part to every nine parts menial grinding and crafting - especially at the later tech tiers. Having to repeat so much work after failing an attempt at a boss feels far too punishing, and some really dumb dinosaurs can take a lot of the challenge and sense of danger out of the many primal locations. Even with all of those quirks, however, I’m still hungry to play more after the 60 hours I’ve spent so far. There aren’t a lot of survival games that have legitimately held my attention that long.

Though it momentarily made me want to commit crimes against my controller at certain points when playing alone, Magicka 2’s one-of-a-kind magic system made it difficult to stay mad for very long. Add in the zany, unpredictable nature of co-op and the many ways in which you can alter the experience, and Magicka 2 can provide long lasting, if somewhat demanding and occasionally frustrating good times.

House of Wolves wisely eliminates the worst parts of The Dark Below by offering a faster method to level gear, a better campaign, and varied endgame activities, assuming you have a regular crew to partake of them with. If you don’t, expect to get a lot less out of this expansion, but overall, it’s still a step in the right direction for Destiny.

Despite its organisational problems, I’d still play Audiosurf 2 over the original in a heartbeat. The representation of the music is just so much more alive than it was before – these courses absolutely buzz with life and energy. Audiosurf 2’s core mode is still thoroughly compelling, and it represents a fantastically immersive and nearly endless way to interact with music you love.

This two-for-one Puzzle & Dragons adventure is more like a “play one and ignore the other.” The Super Mario Bros. Edition delivers the puzzle and RPG challenge I was looking for; it offers tons to do and requires strong strategizing and puzzle skills without any unnecessary story filler, and that’s the series’ strong suit in the first place. It redeems the low point of Puzzle & Dragons Z, which is bogged down by a generic and forced story that does nothing but disrupt the flow of its too-easy gameplay. There’s plenty of content in both, and I’ll be back for more Mario, at least.

Kerbal Space Program does the improbable: it makes learning a complex subject fun. Its cute, clueless characters and sense of humor turn a hardcore physics simulator into something replayable and addictive. Designing, flying, and then retrying missions again and again is a tough challenge that goes right up to the brink of frustration, but the eventual success of achieving virtual space flight is rewarding and even inspirational.

Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains lacks any sort of depth to its missions, and the story mode is a told in a jumbled manner. While it was nice to get some freedom with the Omni-Directional Maneuver gear and to play with some new items in World Mode, the missions bogged down the fun.

Though the straightforward and fetch-quest-heavy main story overstays its welcome, the option of joyfully adventuring through a rich, expansive open world was always there for me when I’d start to burn out. Even if the plot isn’t terribly interesting, the many characters who play a part in it are, and along with the excellent combat and RPG gameplay, they elevate The Witcher 3 to a plane few other RPGs inhabit.

Deep and demanding but incredibly user-friendly, Project CARS looks great, sounds fantastic, and feels even better. The action is ferocious and tactical, the weather effects are awesome, and it’s brimming with content to explore. This is real racing done right.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood places almost all its bets on the intense combat carried over from the game that came before it. The weapons feel great, and the arenas are interesting and filled with opportunity for some strategic creativity. But by doing this, The Old Blood misses out on some of the quieter moments that made The New Order so special. The Old Blood doubles down on blood and guts, but in doing so sacrifices some of its heart.
