It’s so refreshing to be able to declare a third-party Nintendo Switch title as the truly definitive edition. Disgaea 5 Complete is just that – complete. It’s a competent strategy RPG packed to the brim with content that’s bound to keep RPG aficionados entertained for hours and hours. Despite this, some rough visuals and a little bit too much of an emphasis on grinding is bound to limit Disgaea 5 Complete’s mass appeal. Putting that all aside, Disgaea 5 Complete is accessible, and more importantly, great.

While Super Mario Maker 3DS felt crippled and downgraded, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World feels equal. With the Wii U version getting updated to support Poochy & Poochy Dash there’s not too many advantages to the game, but also no downsides. If you missed this on Wii U, there’s no excuses not to pick this up, but if you do own it already you may just want to look into adding the amiibo to your collection. Now if only we had some Poochy Pup amiibo….

ARK: Survival Evolved is hard to recommend on two fronts. The Switch Version is an ugly technical mess, and if it does run well the game happens to be unwelcoming and an unfun grind to obtain the actual draw cards to the game. As a big Dinosaur fan, both issues disappoint me so much. True it would be awesome to ride Dinosaurs around and taming them, but not on this console. If this warning isn’t enough at the very least check out the mobile version (which looks better and has a better interface) and see if the game is for you. At the end of the day, ARK is playable, parts of it are even fun, but all the game and technical issues drag this behemoth-sized game back down into the tar pits.

The ability to play perfect emulations of the classics on the go, with the addition of genuinely good 3D effects should be more than enough reason for Sega fans to pick this one up.

Ultimately I found Hey! Pikmin boring and tedious to play. While younger audiences might find the game enjoyable, had I not been reviewing the game I would have dropped it after an hour or so. There’s a demo available on the eShop, and the gameplay doesn't change too dramatically from what's on offer there, so give it a download before investing your money. While Pikmin fans might be disappointed, hopefully Pikmin 4 is shown off on Switch sooner rather than later.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the biggest shake-up of the Lego game formula while also cramming nine movies into one game, like stuffing Luke into a Tauntaun. It won't be the way you remember the old levels for long-term fans, but they give you the universe to traverse in between adventures to keep you busy for hours.

Lost Sphear is an RPG that’s hard to recommend to everyone, offering a mixed and unbalanced experience. The combat is fast-paced, rewarding and challenging yet sometimes garish. The Spiritnite system is fantastic and yet the Vulcosuits feel undercooked. All in all, Lost Sphear offers an inconsistent experience that is ultimately brought down by an overwhelming sense of tedium and repetition.

While Resident Evil Revelations 2 borrows sparingly from its contemporaries, it is better than it's budget would have you believe it to be. The story is just the right amount of schlock with a smaller yet more focused cast. The tension is actually present in a moody well realised setting. The overall game feel lends itself to a much more enjoyable experience when compared to its predecessor too. Add in a comprehensive (yet slightly grindy) Raid Mode and you've got yourself a winner.

Not a Hero is a game that initially draws you in with a host of colourful characters, semi-humorous writing and an amazing soundtrack. Once you begin to look beyond that, the difficulty spikes, uninspiring environments and characters doing seemingly what they want despite your input to prevent this from being a game I could recommend.

Go Vacation can provide silly sandbox fun given the right company, but the actual structured mini-game content lacks the same level of polish, charm and depth that other Switch multiplayer games feature in spades. With such conditional dependency on enjoyment for what is a steep initial investment, it is difficult to recommend Go Vacation

Runbow is an excellent local multiplayer experience, packed with plenty of game modes and content. Solo players will miss out on the best Runbow has to offer, and I encountered some crashes along the way, but definitely consider this for your upcoming games night with friends.

Wolfenstein II on the Switch is as much a technical feat as it is a fun and solid experience. If you’re after the ultimate version of the game, this is probably not for you. But if you want a new way to play the latest instalment in the series, this is definitely worth checking out.

It’s an RPG that asks a hefty time commitment and doesn’t offer particularly deep character storylines – but the combat, overall story, and character progression make Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA a journey well worth taking.

Nintendo’s bold gambit of trusting one of their most precious franchises with Brace Yourself Games has paid off in creating an essential Switch experience. Cadence of Hyrule is a wonderful musical adventure, giving The Legend of Zelda series a delightfully fresh perspective. Also, if you didn’t already know Danny Baranowsky, you do now. It’s a bloody good time to be a Zelda fan.

Trials Rising is a great case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. It’s classic Trials, the game plays much in the same way as you’re used to. The interesting thing is how they keep you coming back with user created levels, contracts, challenges and dare I say, even the cosmetics. It’s a game with so much personality, that lets everyone also inject their own into it.

Wargroove has given us the closest thing we’re going to get to a new Advance Wars. Nintendo could’ve brought the developer onboard and branded this as an Advance Wars spin-off and made long-suffering fans very happy. I am very happy what we got with Wargroove, if anything I want more of the characters and that gameplay. Who knows, maybe through the campaign creator there’ll be even more stories shared through the community that do the proper story justice. It’s great to see a developer do this genre of game justice and more. If you’ve never played a turn-based strategy game because they can feel inaccessible to you, then Wargroove is the perfect game to jump into. For the fans of the genre, there’s finally a worthy successor.
