At least the price of Namco's game is right: 20 bucks for an acceptable selection of classics, complete with historical documents and (we have to say THANKFULLY) the ability to save high scores. At this point in the Nintendo DS system's lifecycle it shouldn't be difficult to put up some sort of competitive online leaderboard, so we'll play it off like we're disappointed that we can't check in with the rest of the connected Namco Museum DS crowd to see how well they're doing…even if it's such a minor gripe. But at least we're keeping an eye out on current generation expectations.

Fantasy Wars has some gameplay features that make it worthy enough to check out. It’s not as complex as many turn-based strategy titles out there, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A great use of terrain, decent number of units, and large number of unit upgrades make the strategic decision about where and when to attack both important and interesting. The turn countdown is a decent idea as well and forces players out into the field a little quicker, but can tend to cut off the chance to fully explore a map in some cases. Either way, the challenge for those that choose to try and grab the gold medal in each level is going to be pretty extreme. Fantasy Wars doesn’t have the slickest package around, but its heart is good and those looking for a pretty active turn-based combat game will likely find enough to enjoy.

The formula set forth in Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory in 2003 has evolved rather well with Quake Wars, delivering a distinct gameplay experience centered around team dynamics. It may not be the prettiest game out there or feature the greatest sound effects, but the enjoyable core of gameplay helps keep things interesting as you blast through the twelve well-designed maps. The elaborate persistent statistics system only strengthens the game's already impressive replay value, as it gives you something to work towards aside from in-game objectives. It's not the kind of mass-market gameplay that's going to appeal to every FPS arena fan out there, but it's highly entertaining nonetheless.

The framework of an incredible title is definitely here with NBA 08. The Upside Progression system is a deep and engaging way to play the game, an expanded NBA Replay mode improves on the groundbreaking mode, and the addition of commentary adds to the title. However, old gameplay issues, control problems and a regression of the court action to unrealistic action hampers what would've otherwise been an incredible game. It's too bad, because it's an enjoyable game, if you can overlook these problems.

Geon has the look and feel of an 800 Microsoft Point ($10 USD) XBLA game, but one would hope to get something a little more engaging for that amount of money. Developer Strawdog Studios was clearly aiming for a game that is easy to pick up and play, but in the end made a game that is equally easy to simply walk away from. The board design is solid. Everything around the game is well designed, with a good feature set and an attractive style. Unfortunately, that style doesn't extend into the game itself which is a real missed opportunity.

If you've got 800 Wii Points set aside for just one of the Streets of Rage titles, spend them on Streets of Rage 2. But if you've already experienced that game and want more of the same, invest eight more dollars in this third series installment without hesitation. It's hard to talk about it as a standalone game when it's right there in the shadow of one of the Genesis system's best titles, but Streets of Rage 3 is an impressive experience all on its own. Even if it has a bit of a wacked-out plot.

Jackass: The Game can be fun for a bit, but mostly because the content of the stunts is funny. Actually playing them isn't as exciting as simply seeing what happens next, which is unfortunate. If you're into unlockable items then there will be a lot for you here, but if not, you'll find that the whole thing is over rather quickly. It can be a reasonable time waster, but that's about it.

And it's that style of presentation and visual flare that would go on to inspire further games, as "Shining" got its start here with "in the Darkness," but ultimately expanded into one of SEGA's most long-running franchises. Later games dropped the first-person perspective and strict emphasis on dungeon crawling seen here – a wise move – because those, and the level-grinding tedium and likelihood of misdirection they introduce, are the two aspects that might make you want to keep your 800 Wii Points in your virtual wallet, rather than investing in a download. Give this one a try if you don't mind a little old-school RPG monotony mixed in with your fantasy adventuring, or if you're a fan of later games in the Shining series and you're curious to see how it all began.

Should these gripes keep you from playing NHL 2K8? Probably not. The game looks good in action and -- eventually -- feels fun on the ice while offering online leagues and tournaments, unlockable uniforms and more. It sucks that the interface is clunky and that people are going to scoff at the new control system, but if you play hockey games for how real they feel, you've found a winner.
