Driver: Parallel Lines for Wii isn’t a bad game, it’s just late to the party. In the last year and a half since the game’s initial release open-world games have come long way, and that shows not only on the hard-hitting HD consoles, but on Wii as well. Driver attempts to join the ranks of more successful Wii-makes such as Godfather and Scarface, but will find itself at the bottom of the open-world barrel on Nintendo’s console, as the game lacks depth, fine-tuned control, and the right mix of motion/IR control. Driving one-handed can be extremely annoying, as can dealing with the touchy nunchuk steering that can’t seem to be turned off, forcing you to constantly focus on keeping your hand straight. On foot, Driver is missing out on the speed and precision that Wii’s IR can offer, and falls short again to both Godfather and Scarface’s direct cursor control. Wrap these issues up in an open-world game that tries to blend the best of the Driver series with a few of the higher points of GTA and you’ve got a core game that is better than its control would dictate, but feels behind the times when compared to more polished, refined designs on the system. If you’re an open-world junkie, rent this one. All others should pass it up, as there are far more rewarding experiences out there on Wii.

And that's Ecco: The Tides of Time. If it sounds almost exactly like the first Ecco the Dolphin, that's because it is -- it's almost difficult to take it as a separate game, because it's essentially the same experience as what came out for the Genesis one year earlier. If you think an adventure that downplays action and promotes open-ended exploration sounds good, look into either this game or the first Ecco the Dolphin.

Missile Command is a title that stands the test of time. Despite the game's eventual tedium, it will only set players back 400 Microsoft Points (US$5), and is still a memorable experience, one that both accomplished and new missile commanders will want to experience.

Smash Court Tennis is one of the few tennis series to try and take the sport seriously, but it falls a little flat in terms of overall excitement. Some developer needs to establish a medium between over-the-top, arcade action and a simulation of real tennis. Smash Court Tennis does a good job of building a functional career mode with sponsors, fan letters, challenges on the court, and an experience point system that allows you to mold your own style of player. It’s just too bad that the actual tennis can’t keep up the same level of quality.

American gamers really do have the skill to play the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, but it was a good move by Nintendo anyway to create this less frustrating, more funky game – the American Mario 2 is still a lot of fun, and it inspired several aspects of future Super Mario titles. At 500 Wii Points, it's a great value for download. The only reason you may not want to pick it up is if, like Super Mario World, you already own it in another form – this game was re-released with enhanced graphics and a few other bonuses as Super Mario Advance for the launch of the Game Boy Advance back in 2001. As for the "real" Super Mario Bros. 2? Who knows. But the Virtual Console offers Nintendo a great avenue to distribute it here in its original 8-bit form, should the company ever decide we can handle it.

This game never should have come into existence to begin with. Deal or No Deal is not a game show that translates well to video game form. But hey, since Gravity-I went ahead and made it, they could have at least bothered to make it work. At least then Deal or No Deal would be a boring, pointless, annoying game. Instead, it's a boring, pointless, annoying game that is fundamentally broken and thus rendered completely absurd, much like Howie Mandel himself. To top it off, the game isn't even budget priced, making it an even worse deal.

It would've been nice to get a naval strategy game that actually required tactical maneuvers, strategic attacks and retreats, and naval cat and mouse games between the different ship classes that was similar to real life. It would've also been nice to get an naval action game that made you feel like you were in control of a ship or a fleet taking on all comers with tight controls and excellent visuals. Unfortunately, Steel Horizon is a little bit strategy and a little bit real time action, but not even close to enjoyable in either category.

Over the last two years, there hasn't been a single arcade shooter that competes with the Xbox 360's Geometry Wars. Super Stardust HD, however, changes that with its addictively satisfying mechanics, great visuals and tactical yet simplistic design. In truth, and I say this as a heavy duty Geometry Wars player myself, Super Stardust HD is not only just as good as Bizarre Creation's it's in many ways better.

It still doesn¿t have Season or Franchise modes, and the game mechanics are enjoyable, but the PSP version of the game is overshadowed by its issues. The slowdown doesn¿t cripple the game, but it seriously hampers the fast paced action of the title. However, it still captures the big play moments that The Bigs was designed around, which is cool. If you¿re looking for an arcade twist on baseball, you might want to keep an eye out for The Bigs, just be prepared for some technical issues along the way.

Cookie and Cream on the Nintendo DS is what you'd get if you did a mash-up with Wario Ware and a platformer. Many games throw in those touch-screen mini-games in between the platforming action; Cookie and Cream does both simultaneously. It's not overly tough to blow through from start to finish, but there's a lot of payoff for doing it all multiple times. And the multiplayer support isn't half bad either. Just make sure you have the tolerance for slide puzzles and microphone blowing.

Taito¿s Arkanoid and Nintendo¿s Alleyway were considered the best of the Breakout cloning best¿but Nervous Brickdown may have to steal the crown. I definitely love the retro gameplay of Nervous Brickdown, and the style of each of the ten different levels (and their boss battles) are fantastic, fun nods to gaming¿s past ¿ wait until you zip through a Star Wars trench trying to defeat a very Andross-like head on the upper screen with your ball. But even with the variety of styles and level ideas, the fact that the gameplay doesn¿t change a whole lot makes the experience a little repetitive ¿ thanks to the cartridge save it¿s good for quick gameplay shots, but it doesn¿t do a great job holding attention for more than a few minutes at a time.

So it’s a tricky spot that F-Zero X marks. It could be recommended as a great-feeling, tightly-controlled, fast-playing racing experience – which it is. But it can’t be ignored that its sequel GX is the superior experience, and, as it’s fully playable on the backwards-compatible Wii, we’d recommend finding a copy of it instead for first-time F-Zero initiates. Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time stand alone as timeless classics, adventures that should be experienced even though sequels like Sunshine and Twilight Princess have come along since. Star Fox 64 is still the high point of its franchise, as its follow-ups have failed to live up the standard it set in 1997. But F-Zero X isn’t in the same group as those other N64 VC releases. Its sequel did live up to its standard, and exceeded it – and in doing so rendered this release not quite obsolete, but at least much less desirable as an individual game. Don’t stray into the grey area of X, unless you’re an established fan from eight and a half years ago.
