Make no mistake, Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a personal favourite purely for its loving attention to detail and will always rank amongst gaming’s most faithful and memorable movie adaptations – more than worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as The Warriors, Alien: Isolation, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay in that regard. But this marginally prettier and inconsistent remaster doesn’t really make for a profoundly different or improved experience over the 2009 original, and there was a lot of room for improvements that could’ve made it more enjoyable to play through and appreciate all of that fan service.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint seems to be trying to please everyone. Its slow-burn of a single-player story coexists with an open-world bombastic romp with friends, which leads into a play-everyday grind for PvP-rewards, faction and raid gear with seasonal content, and a realistically gritty wargame of survival. But almost every ingredient clashes with another, making them all feel a little more padded, underwhelming, or contradicting than they need to be. But fun can be salvaged if you focus on one or two of those and just limit your expectations.

Shadowkeep improves Destiny 2 in a wide assortment of ways and gives dedicated fans a taste of things to come from an independent Bungie, but it’s ultimately just a taste. Once you’ve burned through it, you’re met with a massive grind that makes up the bulk of this expansion. It also makes Destiny 2 a little tougher to recommend to the uninitiated because of the added complexity that caters to experienced Guardians. Even so, there’s a lot to love about the improvements to customization and it’s hard not to get excited about the story Shadowkeep sets up, even if it doesn’t develop it very far this time. It’s clear this is just the beginning of a brand-new chapter for Destiny 2, and I couldn’t be more excited to see where it goes from here.

It’s more streamlined than the original in terms of team management and it’s definitely way too lean on tracks, but Grid packs fun, fast-paced racing into an easy-to-digest format. Sure, it’s unrealistic for the final race to be Prototypes jumping up and down San Francisco’s iconic hills, but Grid isn’t trying to be a realistic facsimile of modern racing. Hell, with throngs of spectators dangling over the Armco, if Grid were realistic the tracks would just be a sea of severed hands and heads. Instead, it’s a hyperbolic brand of high-contact, Hollywood-style circuit and street racing delivered with style and confidence.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is an excellent 2D platformer full of surprises and delights for fans nostalgic for the glory days of the genre. With some clever approaches to the final boss fight, the overworld map, and refreshing levels for repeat playthroughs, this one sits in the top tier of platformers just below the likes of modern classics like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is a sequel that plays it very safe – which, in this particular case, is for the better. Coming back to the traditional style of co-op gameplay and puzzle solving that made the first two games so delightful is exactly the kind of refocusing that the Trine series needed after the misfire of Trine 3. Some lackluster puzzle designs, technical issues, and a lack of difficulty stand in the way of it overtaking Trine 2 as the best of the series, but Trine 4 still remains a shining example of how cooperative gaming should be, and is one of the most gorgeous looking 2.5D games of 2019.

Despite building itself on well-tread ground, Code Vein definitely moves to the beat of its own drummer, but that beat can lose its rhythm when you need it to be steady. Some changes like being able to easily switch around and experiment with classes on the fly are great, while others like its inconsistent AI partner could be more trouble than they were worth at times. But in both the good and the bad, I appreciated its enthusiasm for mixing things up and getting a little weird. If you’re looking for a unique take on a familiar type of challenge, and are open to loving and hating a game for its many mechanical quirks in the same breath, Code Vein is worth sinking your teeth into.

This year’s sub-par version of FIFA for Switch is almost indistinguishable from last year’s sub-par version of FIFA for Switch, and embodies every bad thing you’ve heard about sports games recycling their content year after year almost to the level of parody. The lack of additions to FIFA 20 Legacy Edition outside of its new, more honest name, and its refusal to innovate either on or off the pitch are disappointing, even borderline insulting. This is surely not the legacy EA had in mind.

Another opportunity to revive one of gaming’s most iconic franchises goes down as more of a disappointing whimper. If Konami hadn’t slapped the Contra name on Rogue Corps no one would’ve guessed it was supposed to be part of the series, but since it’s there it will serve only to disappoint long-term fans. It lacks the franchise’s identifiable gameplay, fumbles the tone and atmosphere, and simply isn’t a good enough twin-stick shooter to stand on its own. If you’re looking for something more like the classic Contra games of old, you should check out the Contra Anniversary Collection or indie gem Blazing Chrome instead.

The Surge 2 manages to recapture a lot of what made the original Souls-style sci-fi adventure fun, even improving on its already-solid combat and gear grind in several meaningful ways, from the added variety of weapons and enemies to the simple but oh-so-welcome ability to build multiple equipment loadouts. It’s missteps, however, made the sequel an overall lesser game than the original: uninspired environmental design and overly ambitious story choices rob it of the same level of satisfaction, even with the mechanical improvements. That said, if you're just here to chop dudes in robot suits in half as you grind up to the next power bracket or craft another piece of gear made out of severed arms, you're probably gonna have a great time. Either way you'll likely still have a good time, but will probably spend most of your playthrough fondly remembering your first time.

Volta is a significant addition to FIFA and while it doesn’t all hit the right notes, it’s a largely enjoyable way to play a wealth of content, including a story mode that’s more concise and engaging than The Journey. Elsewhere, improvements have been made to the core FIFA 20 experience, especially when it comes to defending, but overall controlling the ball feels less consistently fluid. For someone not attracted by the allure of Volta, the stilted pace, coupled with a neglect of offline modes such as Career, make it FIFA 20 an adequate but underwhelming entry into the series.

WRC 8 is a rock-solid rally racer that’s now looming very large in the rearview mirror of current off-road kingpin Dirt Rally 2.0. It’s still not quite as beautiful or broad as the latter but the additions made on top of WRC 7 – particularly the dynamic weather and the vastly improved career mode – are real gamechangers.

Sayonara Wild Hearts plays more like an extended interactive music video than it does a traditional video game, but it’s still a wonderful time. It offers little in terms of challenge (if you aren’t hunting high scores) or substantial player input, but the stirring soundtrack and impressive art and animation all lead to a moving experience that culminates in a joyful finale.
