Borderlands 2 VR is a decent adaptation of the shoot-and-loot classic. While the lack of co-op, expansion content, or control over the difficulty settings is disappointing, the overall experience is positive. It’s best played with the DualShock 4, as the Move controllers simply aren’t good for shooters, and the absence of Aim controller support feels like a major oversight. Still, revisiting Pandora in this new light is mostly a hilarious, action-packed good time. It doesn’t feel as fast and frenzied as it did originally, but it’s still one of the deepest shooter experiences available on PSVR.

Big Bash Boom is a fun, flashy, family-friendly cricket game that takes the raucousness of the BBL and WBBL competitions, and ratchets up the razzle dazzle. Unfortunately its absence of additional gameplay modes, presentational cutbacks, and a miserly unlockable system hold it back from being a direct hit, particularly as a full-priced release.

Forza Horizon 4: Fortune Island is a more earnest slab of DLC aimed at the hardcore fans compared to the studio’s previous wacky work on Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels, and I like it a lot. Routes inspired by the some of the world’s most-loved driving roads, a 10-round treasure hunt powered by clues that reward being a car geek, and all wrapped up in the unbeatable Forza Horizon formula? I think it’s going to be a while before I think about heading back to the mainland.

Even after 60 hours of bug hunting with a huge assortment of weapons and abilities, the mass bug-slaughter that EDF 5 does well is deliciously unique and keeps me coming back. It looks and feels like a throwback to a simpler age of gaming and and suffers from some unpolished technical decisions and sometimes less-than-stellar late-game balance, but the vast majority of EDF 5’s missions are energetic essays on a largely forgotten philosophy of action game that deserves further exploration. And when you’re joined by others, it becomes way too much fun to miss.

By blending real-time stealth with tried-and-true tactics gameplay, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden breaks exciting new ground for the turn-based strategy game. Even with some mechanics that don’t mesh perfectly with the gameplay, it teases your brain in interesting, insightful ways.

Just Cause 4 has everything you expect from a Just Cause game, almost to a fault. Relative to Just Cause 3 the improvements are widespread across its beautiful open world, but generally minor. So while blowing up yet another dictator’s army is the same kind of mindless explosive fun and physics-based comedy the series is built on, it doesn’t do much to incorporate the new weather systems or grapple mods into combat. That leaves me with a distinct “more of the same” feeling.

Underworld Ascendant is just broken. What little roleplaying game fun there might’ve been is taken off the table by technical failings, a save system that feels like cruel and unusual punishment, and a bland story that takes place in similarly repetitive environments. Not one of the core systems for interacting with the world, be it combat, magic, or stealth impresses on its own, and that’s when they even work right. Our beleaguered Ascendant is thus sent, over and over again, into buggy dungeons to complete fetch quests and assassination missions to the best of their unimpressive abilities. Underworld Ascendant is a swing and a miss so powerful that it knocks itself off-balance, and the seeds of interesting ideas fail to be realized at nearly every juncture.

Like a fresh recruit, Battlefield V was clearly deployed into action without adequate preparation. Civilization VI is as brilliant a 4X strategy game on Switch as it is on PC, tablets, or phones. With touch and Joy-Con controls that work reasonably well in both handheld and docked modes, I wouldn't be too upset about an even longer commute because it would give me more time to play a few turns.

Hitman 2 doesn’t add much of note to the structure of its predecessor and thus feels more like Hitman 1.5 than a full-blown sequel. But that’s not a bad thing. By offering more of the deepest, fullest stealth sandboxes in gaming in one single package rather than six episodic ones, it earns its keep. The inclusion of Hitman (2016) is a bonus for those that didn’t catch the reboot initially. Here’s hoping they put more effort into the plot next time.

Toys for Bob has done a great job of filling Spyro’s first three adventures with such reinvigorated life. Worlds are packed to the brim with more detail, animations are consistently endearing, and the quality of life improvements make revisiting these once analog stick-less platformers a joy to play. They’re definitely easier thanks to some of those changes, but no less charming to play. It’s great to see Spyro’s return treated with such love and care, and I hope renewed interest in his past can light the way for his future.
