Wolfenstein: Youngblood is an aggressively okay co-op shooter that doesn’t come close to recapturing the joy of its predecessor’s action or its surprisingly interesting characters and story. It doesn’t completely fumble the fun of its weapons and abilities or counteract the pleasing sensation of squishing Nazis between your toes, but it does make it harder to enjoy at seemingly every turn with an out-of-place leveling system, busted stealth gameplay, some aggravating boss fights and inadequate checkpoint saves. Frankly, I expected more from the Blazkowicz twins.

In yet another take on the Infinity Stone saga, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a fun and irreverent comic book story that pulls from an exceptionally wide pool of Marvel material. Its combat systems are fairly simple, but they were still surprisingly engaging as I excitedly experimented with different hero combinations while my roster of A, B, and C-list characters grew. Its vast array of post-game upgrades and other extras has been uninteresting so far, and there are (unsurprisingly) some inherited camera issues in co-op, but this superhero brawler is still a treat to play alone and with friends alike.

At its heart, Stranger Things 3: The Game really feels like it exists for the most die-hard fans of the show; The people who will be elated by the very idea of having the series show up in their game library in addition to their Netflix queue. It's thoughtfully conceived and strikes a good balance between following the show faithfully and adhering to the structure of the games it imitates. Still, with thin combat and repetitive quests, it fails to make a strong case for itself apart from the show and its fandom.

Despite having a title that deserves a firm slap across the face for the marketing executive who thought it up, Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered is a great get for those who may have missed it the first time around, or anyone who might want to revisit (and re-destroy) the red planet. It may not add any new content to address the empty open world and bland story, but it does perform well, and everything I loved about Red Faction: Guerrilla is still front and center and looking better than ever.

Accessible yet unapologetically authentic, F1 2019 is still best-in-class when it comes to the art of bringing a modern motorsport to life. However, besides some bold but mostly short-lived tweaks to the career mode and some new functionality for online racers, there’s a pretty strong sense of déjà vu here. F1 2019 is a very, very good game – the best F1 game to date – but it definitely doesn’t always seem like a new game.

The Sinking City’s creation of a new Lovecraftian vision paired with compelling stories, exciting environments, and memorable characters make for one of the better Cthulhu lore games I’ve played. Its commitment to tastefully updating the storytelling methods, while preserving the setting and tone of Lovecraft shines through the tedium and frustration. Though the laborious open-world travel, clunky combat, and aggravating research system can grow wearisome, there’s much to like in The Sinking City. I really hope to see a sequel from Frogwares, giving them the opportunity to refine these ideas in a sequel, because there's a lot of promise here that gets watered down by the tedious stuff.

There is no shortage of good Metroidvanias these days, but Bloodstained does show that Koji Igarashi’s particular brand of “Igavania” still has teeth. Exploring the castle’s many secrets is a delight, and there is a dizzying array of weapons and powers waiting to be bent to your will. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, one of the greatest games ever made, finally has a worthy successor on consoles and now on PC.

After at least two dozen Traveller’s Tales LEGO games bringing a grab-bag of LucasFilm, Disney, and WB properties to life, Playground Games’ take on the toy line in Forza Horizon 4: LEGO Speed Champions is the freshest twist on LEGO games in years. The realistic look of the LEGO itself is terrific and I just cannot tire of shattering it to bits. Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels remains the bigger and bolder toy adaptation though and, as a strictly car and vehicle stunt-based toy, it’s probably always going to be the more elegant fit for a madcap, unprecedented experience in the Forza world. For all its eye-catching colour and good-humoured fun, there’s a far more standard Horizon driving experience baked into LEGO Speed Champions.

Although I wish there was more depth to its detective work, Judgment’s smooth and spectacular street fighting, eclectic array of side activities, and suspenseful serial killer-based plot makes for the best original Yakuza game of this console generation. With its high-quality English-language dub and all-new cast of characters, it’s also the most approachable for newcomers. Provided you’re happy to serve justice with the swing of a sledgehammer rather than the knock of a gavel, Judgment is well worth investigating.

I’m a bit confounded after my time with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. I’ve definitely been enjoying the daily grind of hunting down Foundables, and the many goals, pools of experience points, and options add variety to an experience that has grown quite stale to me in other games. And yet, it does such a poor job of initially introducing you to all these aspects, or giving you a sense of how to prioritize them, that it often left me uncertain if I was doing it wrong. Adding onto that the quick collectible ceiling I ran into, the lack of meaningful customization, and a lack of meaningful ways to interact with other players who aren’t physically there at the moment, and I’m worried about the longevity of this walking RPG. Wizards Unite has been a fun, small dose of magic in my daily life for a week, and I plan to continue dipping into the wizarding world each day for the foreseeable future, but other than throwing a bubble around a troll, I’m not sure how engaging all of these mechanics will remain in the long run.
