On the gameplay side of things, Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! is a fair conversion of the arcade original Rainbow Islands' game design for WiiWare -- so the handful of fans who've loved that game since the '80s will no doubt be delighted to see the series making a comeback today. This is a package that has a much tougher time arguing its case from a value standpoint, though, as its big brother Bubble Bobble just made a splash here on WiiWare a few weeks ago with its own revival, and it was packed with a lot more content, replay value and extra features -- for two dollars less.
Maybe Taito will one day wise up, and stop making Rainbow Islands look like Bubble Bobble's wimpy little brother by giving it some more distance in the release schedule, and a greater amount of effort in fleshing its experience out. As it is, I've got to recommend you take the eight dollars you would have spent on this one, put two of them back in your pocket, and use the rest to download Bubble Bobble Plus!. That's the game where Bubby and Bobby shine much more brightly, even without a single rainbow anywhere to be seen.
