Left Alive es un juego duro, tosco, difícil y, por momentos injusto (por la IA de los enemigos), con un control mejorable, un sistema de checkpoints cuestionable y otras deficiencias, técnicas incluidas. Mechas, sigilo, acción... ninguna de sus partes logra brillar al 100%. Pero, aun con todo, tiene "algo" que puede picarte a seguir jugando...

Left Alive acaba retrotrayéndonos a la época en la que el desarrollo japonés presentó las peores decisiones de diseño en videojuegos. Como título esencialmente de sigilo, Left Alive nunca consigue satisfacer al jugador, presentando multitud de situaciones que escapan a su control y vuelven al juego una completa lotería. No mejora mucho en sus fases de tiroteos porque el juego no está planteado como un shooter en tercera persona con coberturas. Suerte que al menos hay algo de combate de Wanzer, que siempre el poder destructivo de un buen mecha te deja un buen sabor de boca.

Nei mesi che hanno preceduto il suo lancio sul mercato Left Alive è sempre rimasto in disparte, mostrandosi solo timidamente e sfruttando il character design di Yoji Shinkawa per sottolineare la somiglianza con il concept dei primi Metal Gear Solid. Una vicinanza che, in fin dei conti, è solo produttiva: il nuovo gioco di Square-Enix è un tributo all'epoca d'oro degli action nipponici, della fantapolitica “stilizzata” e delle gloriose sperimentazioni con il 3D. Non ci sarebbe stato nulla di male in un recupero nostalgico di quei valori e di quel modo d'intendere il videogioco, anche accettando di avere per le mani un prodotto non troppo moderno e un po' ingessato. Avremmo anzi ben gradito un titolo lontano dalle logiche del videogioco di massa, soprattutto perché lo stealth non è un genere molto frequentato. Il problema è che Left Alive sbaglia davvero troppe cose: si presenta con un gameplay palesemente limitato, che solo nel numero e nella diversità di gadget riesce tutto sommato a convincere. Quanto si tratta di infiltrazione e sparatorie i problemi sono soverchianti, e riguardano la responsività del sistema di controllo, l'intelligenza artificiale, la varietà di approcci stealth, la struttura delle missioni. Chiude il quadro un colpo d'occhio infelice ed un numero di livelli troppo misero. Un vero peccato: la tragedia di Novo Slavia e i tratti magnetici dei personaggi di Shinkawa avrebbero meritato di meglio.

I enjoy high-tension military thrillers and stealth games, but Left Alive falls flat in every way that it attempts to stand out. Its story of surviving a technologically advanced invasion has some interesting ideas but is delivered with limp dialogue and voice acting from annoying characters. Worse, every concept introduced to its gameplay – stealth, action, crafting, and Wanzer combat – comes awash with bad ideas and uneven execution that make it feel difficult for all the wrong reasons, including bullet-sponge enemies and wildly inconsistent AI. The crafting is an interesting idea but is clunky to use in a pinch, even when it’s key to progression and survival. All these issues crushed the fun a little bit more every time they got me killed. Left Alive is probably best left unplayed.

Even with its exhaustive, laundry list of issues, it’s telling when a broken game of this magnitude still manages to rustle up some semblance of potential. But that’s perhaps why the end result of Left Alive is as depressing as it is and why the disappointment in its execution is matched (colossally so) only by the frustration in its perceived notion of competency. Left Alive is as close to as abysmal a delivery as you can get without denoting it as some utter failure through-and-through, primarily due to the most minuscule of good intentions and half-baked ideas that litter its mostly generic and uninspired game world. But with so many narrative, technical and gameplay issues that pop up at almost every turn — all wound up within some of the worst third-person stealth mechanics imaginable — Left Alive is both a horridly-conceived experience and a fundamentally unenjoyable product to even attempt to immerse one’s self in.

Le projet était intéressant, le parti pris également, mais le produit fini est trop imparfait, avec des boucles de gameplay qui ne fonctionnent tout simplement pas. À oublier.

Vous l’aurez compris, Left Alive est loin d’être le jeu de l’année. Il se classerait même plutôt du côté des pires… Entre les graphismes de très mauvaise facture et l’absence de mécanique d’infiltration indispensable dans tout jeu du genre, il est clair qu’il ne restera pas dans les annales. Il est loin d’être le digne héritier de la saga dont il s’inspire : Front Mission.

It’s a disappointing game for fans of Armored Core, or anyone who had this bought this game at full price. Perhaps, in an alternate universe like the series is based on, this game could have been an indie darling. But alas, what you see is what you get, a game of “what ifs”.

With the exception of the story, everything about this ill-conceived Front Mission spin-off feels totally broken, horribly dated, and entirely unloved. Left Alive works better as an unpolished frustration simulator than an action/stealth game.
