Che Mighty No. 9 non fosse un titolo destinato a tutti lo sapevamo da sempre, da quando tre anni fa la creatura di Keiji Inafune apparve quasi dal nulla e, con un Kickstarter da 4 milioni di dollari, diede il via al sogno del Designer di riportare in vita la propria IP più amata e fortunata. Perché Mighty No. 9, a ben vedere, altri non è che Mega Man: un nuovo eroe, nuovi personaggi e una storiella dal sapore anni ’80 imbastita di tecnologia futuristica, ma la concezione alla base del gameplay, la struttura degli scenari, persino il level e il character design non necessitano di uno sguardo particolarmente attento per tradire i propri illustri natali. Un citazionismo rivolto ad una limitata frangia di giocatori, attratti da quelle sfide bidimensionali a scorrimento del passato destinate poi a cedere il passo ad altri tipi di produzione. Mighty No.9 nasce sotto questa stella, ma evidentemente sceglie l’ascendente sbagliato. Una gestazione travagliata e ricca di imprevisti si traduce in ritardi sequenziali, destinati a loro volta a riflettersi in scelte di design a volte semplici, a volte semplicistiche, a volte addirittura opinabili. Assenza di innovazione, tecnologia carente e mancanza di carisma non sono difetti di poco conto, resi ancor più evidenti dal tempo richiesto da Comcept per portare a termine lo sviluppo, forse davvero eccessivo, e dal budget non certo irrisorio a disposizione. Mighty No. 9, alla fine della fiera, passerà alla storia come l’attesa meno ripagata dell’illustre Game Designer del Sol Levante, un titolo senza infamia né lode in grado di svolgere il proprio compito, ma incapace di reggere il peso del cannone del proprio predecessore. E questo è il suo peccato più grande.

Keiji Inafune ha tratado de resucitar una de sus obras más majestuosas de su trayectoria, Mega Man, pero no ha conseguido su propósito. Y es que si bien Mighty Nº 9 posee sus virtudes y es una aventura de acción y plataformas de desarrollo 2D que puede llegar a divertir a un grupo de usuarios, lo cierto es que queda lejos de lo que muchos esperaban. La falta de inspiración y de brillantez son evidentes y es difícil pasarlas por alto.

Malgré son fort pedigree, Mighty No. 9 n'a pas l'air d'avoir saisi ce qui rendait Mega Man, et les actions-platformers en général, aussi fun. Ok, il y a bien quelques moments où la mayonnaise prend, mais ces derniers sont plombés par une animation erratique et un rendu visuel morne. L'âme du Mega Man a déserté les lieux, pire encore, le titre ne dispose même pas d'une personnalité qui lui est propre. Par conséquent, Mighty No. 9 se pose en imposteur de seconde zone plutôt qu'en digne successeur spirituel de la célèbre licence.

Despite its pedigree, Mighty No. 9 doesn’t seem to have a good sense of what was fun about Mega Man, or 2D action-platformers in general. There are brief moments where its pieces come together, but even then it’s hamstrung by its visually joyless art and animation. The soul of the Blue Bomber just isn’t here, and worse yet there’s no endearing personality of its own, and as a result, Mighty No. 9 feels much more like a second-rate imposter than a spiritual successor.

Tras tanto tiempo esperándolo, no podemos sino sentirnos decepcionados por Mighty No. 9. Keiji Inafune no ha sido capaz de representar con maestría los elementos que hicieron grande a la franquicia Mega Man con el paso de las entregas. Los fans de Mega Man se sentirán decepcionados con esta secuela espiritual. Aquellos que no conozcan la obra original, se sentirán confundidos, con un título que no aporta nada nuevo al género y se siente demasiado genérico y en rara ocasión divertido. Un intento de resurrección de todo un clásico tirado a la basura y casi 4 millones de dólares de financiación desperdiciados.

Uneven in tone and execution, Mighty No 9 is equal parts fun and frustration. Inafune won’t reignite the fire of his famed franchise with this initial effort. We can only hope that subsequent attempts to reboot the blue bomber turn out better.

If you backed Mighty No. 9's Kickstarter, this next sentence is going to sting a little, despite the fact that it's something that you're well aware of by now. The phrase that best describes Keiji Inafune's infamous spiritual successor to the classic action-platforming franchise is "aggressively mediocre." In fact, Mighty No. 9 is such an average video game that reviewers could give future mediocre games a Mighty No. 9 out of ten and it would serve as a perfect indication of their quality. Despite spending eleven hours messing around with every element present in Mighty No. 9, this is something that was evident from moment one. All jokes aside, when you consider the hype and attention surrounding Inafune's return to the 2D platforming realm, the fact that this is what we've received is nothing short of a massive disappointment. From its bland level design to its boring Playmobil-style aesthetic, Mighty No. 9 is a testament to everything that can go wrong with a crowd-funding campaign. Considering that Comcept is already talking about making a sequel, this likely isn't the last we've seen of this store-brand version of the Blue Bomber. Maybe Mighty No. 9 2 will be the Mega Man rebirth we so desperately desire, but at this point, Inafune's attempted return to glory is a bona fide swing and a miss.

En bref, Mighty No.9 est un jeu d’action plutôt réussi du point de vue du gameplay. Alors oui, l’esprit Mega Man y est : ça ressemble à du Mega Man, ça sent comme Mega Man, mais le résultat est loin d’être convaincant dans son ensemble. Le système d’assimilation des ennemis, le dash et les mouvements du héros sont plaisants à manipuler. Les modes de jeu proposés et la musique sont aussi appréciables, mais tout le reste est bien en-deçà. Les niveaux sont plutôt sympathiques mais ne sont pas transcendants. Graphiquement, on est loin de s’imaginer que le projet a été financé à près de quatre millions de dollars. Oui, nous évoquons fortement cet aspect financier, mais nous estimons que lorsqu’on obtient autant d’argent et que l’on se retrouve finalement en face d’un projet bancal, il est difficile de passer outre toutes les erreurs constatées : d’abord le DLC payant, les problèmes de performances, le manque de travail dans l’animation et la mise en scène, le manque d’approfondissement de l’histoire, des personnages, mais aussi les doublages français peu convaincants… tout cela contribue à laisser un goût amer que parvient à peine à compenser les points positifs. La plus grande interrogation qui subsiste est la suivante : Mais dans quoi est parti l’argent des contributeurs du projet ? Malgré tout, assez étonnamment, les énormes problèmes mis de côté, l’expérience a tout de même été plutôt agréable. Alors si vous savez parfaitement à quoi vous attendre et si Mega Man vous manque, vous pouvez toujours attendre une baisse de prix et tenter cette expérience de substitution un peu plus tard… en soldes.

This game could have been so much more had it not been saddled with a weight of expectation as great as being a spiritual successor of the Mega Man series. It isn’t bad, it’s just painfully average. For all the clamour and claims that had been made about the title nothing in it actually lives up to the hype.

Mighty No. 9 is an action-platform video game developed by Comcept, in conjunction with Inti Creates, and published by Deep Silver. The creation of the game was based on the online crowdfunding website Kickstarter[2] and incorporated heavy input from the public. Mighty No. 9 closely resembles the early Mega Man series in both gameplay and character design, which project lead Keiji Inafune worked on, and is considered its spiritual successor.
