WRC 8 is a rock-solid rally racer that’s now looming very large in the rearview mirror of current off-road kingpin Dirt Rally 2.0. It’s still not quite as beautiful or broad as the latter but the additions made on top of WRC 7 – particularly the dynamic weather and the vastly improved career mode – are real gamechangers.

By far the best outing every by KT Racing/Kylotonn and in the WRC franchise as a whole. With a well-defined career mode, backed up by a wealth of stages, set across a variety of places within the world, all of which are well designed, WRC 8 offers a lot for fans who want yet another strong rally game to jump into. While not quite alongside DiRT Rally 2.0, it's certainly coming close.

While it’s a slight shame that the series this year doesn’t quite come out unscathed, WRC 8 is nonetheless a fun and well-crafted entrant in the World Rally Championship series. The series’ unrelenting, doubling-down on the simulation approach — and barely giving its players room for error — is still as prominent and bound to put off those looking for an easy ride. If you’re the kind of person who appreciates the finer detail and are looking for a racing experience that rewards smart, split-second decision-making, however, this is the kind of package that can offer so many great and engaging moments. Even if the road there may be paved with a few harsh lessons. In the end, with an expanded and much-improved career mode, some thoughtful, small-and-subtle tweaks and even more unpredictable elements to keep wary of — on top of all the care put into the physics, feedback and very sound — Kylotonn’s latest in WRC 8 stands as the studio’s best interpretation yet.

The year that Kylotonn took to get WRC 8 back into the top contenders of rally games was worth it. Its Career mode alone is enough to make you sit down for hours and plan out how to manage your team, drive your car, and meet the conditions of your contract. With the car’s level of detail being extremely high, decent driving mechanics, and the bevvy of game modes being at an all-time high, this is a racing game that any fan of racing should absolutely try.

Tout vient à point à qui sait attendre. Kylotonn a pris son temps pour couver WRC 8, et on ne va pas s'en plaindre quand l'on voit le résultat final, à savoir un nouvel opus du jeu de rallye plus profond et encore plus beau que son prédécesseur. Le mode carrière flambant neuf orienté gestion est une réussite, et se pose en nouveau souffle pour la série même s'il ne va pas très loin en termes d'immersion, du pain béni pour les fans de la discipline qui tournaient en rond avec WRC 7. Les efforts consentis sur les détails sonores et graphiques sont bien visibles, et la nouvelle météo dynamique s'avère être une vraie plus-value sur les courses et la variété du titre. Sachant que la licence n'a rien perdu de son exigence technique, on peut dire que WRC 8 se hisse cette année en vraie référence du sim-racing. Un bolide qui est en train de rouler sérieusement sur les plates-bandes de Dirt.
