Call of Cthulhu is a dark ride through a mad, cosmic horror nightmare with a paranormal detective story as your vehicle. Occasionally poor level and encounter design can make the eerily atmospheric road a little bumpy, but the engaging mystery and an intriguing utilization of RPG mechanics make it one of the more enjoyable Lovecraftian games in years.

Call of Cthulhu è un avventura investigativa in prima persona basata sull'opera di Howard Phillips Lovecraft e sui suoi cicli dell'orrore cosmico: un acquisto imprescindibile per gli amanti sia della sua opera specifica, che più in generale delle tematiche angoscianti, surreali e oniriche. Parole difficili a parte, la conversione per Nintendo Switch dell'opera di Cyanide si mantiene quasi sempre buoni livelli, senza eccellere ma anche senza manifestare vistose problematiche. Il gioco aveva i suoi limiti già su PC e sulle altre console, e chiaramente la console ibrida Nintendo li eredita e vi aggiunge il suo hardware specifico, a generare ulteriori compromessi. Nessuno di loro però arreca danno alla narrazione, al gameplay e in generale alla fruizione del titolo. Se non avete ancora acquistato Call of Cthulhu, dunque, Nintendo Switch potrebbe rappresentare una valida scelta.

Già in occasione della prima recensione, nell'ottobre 2018, erano stati evidenziati tutti i limiti di un titolo incapace di lasciare il segno. Non per questo mediocre, ma sicuramente al di sotto delle aspettative. Call of Cthulhu offriva al giocatore un'esperienza di gioco sin troppo lineare, ma quantomeno non peccava sul fronte delle atmosfere. Tradotto: i fan di Lovecraft potevano sicuramente avvicinarsi al titolo Cyanide senza alcun timore. La buona notizia è che la conversione su Switch non delude: a fronte di qualche piccolo sacrificio in termini di texture e nitidezza, ci ritroviamo tra le mani un port solido e godibile. Il titolo è lo stesso di un anno fa (caricamenti eterni inclusi, purtroppo): considerando che il materiale di partenza, dal punto di vista tecnico, non faceva certo gridare al miracolo, si potrebbe quasi dire che il gioco si trovi maggiormente a proprio agio sull'ibrida Nintendo. Volete mettere portarvi Cthulhu ovunque, persino su un'isola remota?

Davantage centré sur la narration que l'interaction, Call of Cthulhu brille par son atmosphère et son écriture, mais se heurte à une interactivité assez limitée et des phases de jeu, notamment de recherche ou d'infiltration, pas toujours très heureuses. Les promesses de liberté d'action et d'histoire immersive, tenues dans le premier tiers du jeu, s'effacent dans sa dernière portion au profit d'une narration précipitée et parfois maladroite. Déjà techniquement faible sur les versions PC et consoles de salon, la version Switch du jeu pâti d'un downgrade manifeste, nettement plus apparent en mode docké qu'en mode portable, qui sera donc à privilégier Ainsi, si une épopée au cœur de la folie pendant une petite dizaine d'heures vous tente, Call of Cthulhu ne sera pas un moment désagréable, loin s'en faut, mais il faudra lui pardonner ses maladresses de forme pour en apprécier le fond.

Call of Cthulhu manages to deliver a game that’s ripe with atmosphere but is built upon tried-and-true tropes of the genre that never really manage to evolve beyond the scope of what’s already been seen and heard before. Paired with some technical hiccups, we can say that Call of Cthulhu is only really for truly dedicated fans of Lovecraft; everyone else is advised to look elsewhere for their entertainment.
