Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 is a step forward for the series on the pitch, and provides a great foundation for it to build on going forward. But it feels like it’s only taken one step forward rather than a huge leap. I don’t understand why this revamp hasn’t permeated every aspect of PES – it's as if there’s still a touch of nostalgia that’s holding the series back ever so slightly. Ultimately, it’s a real testament to the enduring satisfaction of PES’s gameplay – a football experience based on freedom and creativity – that it’s still worth recommending in spite of these obvious shortcomings.

PES 2014 es un buen comienzo para la serie de cara a la nueva generación. Konami ha conformado una simulación fluida e intensa que consigue enganchar y ofrecer gran variedad de posibilidades a los jugadores. Sin embargo hay pequeños fallos aquí y allá que enturbian el resultado, quizás por la falta de tiempo para llevar a cabo todas las ideas del equipo de desarrollo, quizás por falta de ambición. Nos referimos a detalles como las licencias, los fallos en jugabilidad, la falta de parecido físico de muchos de los jugadores...

PES 2014 is another strong entry into the second fiddle series, providing a great no frills game of soccer. With a lack of licensed assets, an uninspired presentation and an almost nonexistent soundtrack, it can’t complete with the polish or flair of FIFA 14, but the core game of soccer has been tweaked in fundamentally impressive ways. The debut of the Fox Engine signals exciting things to come for the series, already showing off some unique and realistic physics here. With improved player handling, new collision detection and the best visuals of the series, PES 2014 is simply another great soccer game.

Sans être la révolution espérée, PES 2014 poursuit son petit bonhomme de chemin et prépare ses pions en prévision de la next-gen. Fort d'un moteur graphique de qualité et d'un système de construction de jeu plus réaliste, le titre n'est cependant pas exempt de défauts. Entre les problèmes d'IA des gardiens et des arbitres, des menus peu ergonomiques, ou un contenu moins important que chez la concurrence, il y a encore matière à progresser avant de débarquer sur la prochaine génération de consoles. Il reste un épisode encourageant pour la suite de la série, et suffisamment fun pour que l'on s'y attarde : et c'est déjà une bonne chose.

Konami took a major risk stripping Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 of the usual excesses in console sports video games. Console players are accustomed to pomp and outsized feature sets, while hardcore football fans on PCs looking for a simulation experience already have the long running Football Manager series. While the gambit isn’t wholly successful – it’s hard not to wish that this game had the visual panache of early Fox Engine demoes – PES‘ philosophy allows its sweet soccer to shine. It will not topple EA’s FIFA empire, but it doesn’t need to. Instead it offers something different.

Con sensaciones encontradas recibimos a PES 2014. Por un lado es obvio que la improvisación y la falta de tiempo ha provocado graves problemas a la nueva entrega de la serie deportiva, que se traducen en notables ausencias y una manifiesta falta de pulido. Sin embargo también es cierto que hay partes que invitan a mirar al futuro con optimismo y que, de seguir trabajando en ellas para su mejora, pueden acabar generando entregas venideras de una gran calidad.
