Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny perfectly illustrates how crucial challenge and reward are to crafting a compelling game experience. When you remove these two things, even the greatest games devolve into nothing more than an empty series of button presses. While Tides of Destiny does lack polish and its execution could be tighter in spots, those aren't unforgivable flaws. Ultimately, its downfall is the policy of simplicity and accessibility it ruthlessly enforces, turning what could have been an engaging mix of different gameplay types into a series of chores.
