Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth is a great and easily approachable game. The intuitive interface and flexibility of the numerous options make it an easy “yes” for any strategy gamer or Civ fan looking for something more than Earth’s history may have to offer. While the visual and stylistic choices may not prove to be to everyone’s tastes, there is plenty of both new and familiar to satisfy anyone willing to hop on aboard and see where Beyond Earth is able to take you.

It must be an interesting challenge for developers of a series so focused on history to tackle questions of humanity’s future. Obviously both subjects tap into many of the same sources, but where most Civilization games explore who we are, Beyond Earth systemizes who we could be. This is a work of speculative fiction that allows the player to speculate for themselves, starting from a similar place each time but potentially reaching vastly different conclusions. It’s also a tightly-designed, well-balanced 4X game that is sure to consume many gamers’ free time in the coming months and years. That’s one bit of speculation I’m confident in.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth è Civilization V rivisto e corretto per la colonizzazione planetaria. Considerata la base di partenza era impossibile sbagliare, ma quando le similitudini si fanno spietatamente più evidenti, ossia sulla lunga distanza, l'espressione "grossa MOD" inizia a far capolino nel cervello. Non vogliamo essere ingenerosi, perché è chiaro che l'ultima fatica di Firaxis farà felici gli appassionati della serie. Purtroppo gli manca il piacere del rischio, come fu quello che Meier si prese all'epoca dello sviluppo di Alpha Centauri, ossia non si vede quell'innovatività che fa la differenza tra un ottimo prodotto e un capolavoro. Per il resto ci troviamo di fronte al solito mastodonte della strategia a turni, capace di catturare per ore e ore nelle spire delle sue rodatissime meccaniche e di confermare che quando si parla di strategici di livello, Meier e i suoi sono ancora i punti di riferimento cui tutta l'industria deve guardare.

Civilization : Beyond Earth représente plus qu'un « Civ dans l'espace ». Avec l’introduction d'un très bon système d'affinité parfaitement intégré au jeu, d'une toile technologique riche et la cohésion à tout instant de chaque élément de gameplay par rapport à son univers SF, Beyond Earth respecte l'essence de la licence, en modernisant ses mécaniques sans les changer profondément. Ainsi, si certains pourront déplorer l'abandon de la dimension historique de Civilization, le faible dépaysement provoqué par un univers un peu terne ou encore l'absence de bouleversements fondamentaux d'une série qui reste un peu trop dans sa zone de confort, il serait regrettable de passer à côté de ce 4X spatial chronophage et réussi à bien des égards.

La grande force de Civilization : Beyond Earth réside dans son contexte futuriste, qui apporte un vrai vent de fraicheur dans la saga. Outre la forme, le fond a été modifié aussi pour proposer aux joueurs quelque chose d'accessible mais néanmoins très profond, avec notamment la toile des technologies, les valeurs, les affinités et bien sûr ces extra-terrestres, qui assurent une vraie replay value. Pour autant, la véritable révolution n'est pas encore là et on souffre encore un peu trop des tutos à rallonge, des fins de parties laborieuses ainsi que d'un certain manque lisibilité lorsque la carte est trop chargée... Mais si vous êtes fan du genre et que la dimension futuriste vous plaît, difficile de passer à côté !

Civilization Beyond Earth es un excelente punto de partida para una franquicia que, además de mirar al pasado, también quiere fijar la vista en el futuro. Se han añadido mejoras muy interesantes, tanto la red de tecnologías como el sistema de afinidades, que tienen un impacto real en el juego. Por contra, la simplificación de algunos aspectos desarrollados en la última expansión de Civilization V dejan al título algo corto respecto a su predecesor. Con todo, es un buen punto de partida para este spin off.

Beyond Earth is nowhere near the strongest game in the more than 20-year-old Civilization series, but this big collection of interesting experimental ideas definitely still kept me playing long after I should’ve gone to bed. The Affinities and streamlined military upgrade system, and a colorful change of scenery make it worth the time to figure out the difference between Protogenetics and Surrogacy, and suffering through temperamental alien wildlife.
