Cyber Shadow is a wonderful merging of old-school aesthetic and modern design sensibilities, much like Shovel Knight was back in 2014. Sure, its story is forgettable and some of its checkpoint placements are far enough apart to make me hesitant to apply a “tough but fair” label without caveats, but the way it evolves and changes over the course of its seven to eight hour campaign thanks to excellent level, enemy, and progression design is exemplary. Combine that with what’s an early contender for best soundtrack of 2021, and it’s easy to see Cyber Shadow as the start of something great for both Mechanical Head Studios and Yacht Club Games.

There’s no better way to sum it up than just by getting straight to the point: Cyber Shadow is a fun action-platformer and one that expertly emulates the NES classic of yore. While it also kept some rather hair-pulling moments, largely thanks to a few annoying level sections, it still manages to deliver the type of classic, action-packed gameplay that the best games in the genre were known for. Throw in an engaging story, superb graphics and a few neat secrets, and this is one throwback to a twisted cybernetic future worth basking in.

Secondo noi, Mechanical Head Studio ha il talento per creare, tenendo buone le fonti di ispirazione di Cyber Shadow, un gioco più coeso e bilanciato di quest'ultimo, soprattutto considerando che la pubblicazione è avvenuta sotto l'ala protettrice di Yacht Club Games. Invece, la produzione finlandese marca il passo proprio laddove altri congeneri brillano, e cioè sulla capacità di diversificarsi dalla massa e su un aumento della difficoltà certosino e commisurato ai poteri ottenuti dal protagonista. Eppure, pur notando questi inciampi, soprattutto per chi è cresciuto a pane e Ninja Gaiden è difficile tenere il broncio a lungo alle avventure di Shadow, punteggiate da una colonna sonora di gran classe, da una cura per i dettagli fuori dal comune e da un sistema di controllo sempre preciso, che non sarà mai causa di una delle centinaia di morti in cui è inevitabile incappare. Adesso ci aspettiamo il salto di qualità da questo promettente sviluppatore, perché le premesse per un successo in stile Shovel Knight ma a tema cyberpunk ci sono tutte.

Cyber Shadow tient sa promesse sans contestation possible. Cet hommage à Ninja Gaiden pioche dans les jeux de l'époque pour nous offrir un jeu d'action/plates-formes fun et grisant. Des boss dans tous les sens, un héros agile et un challenge plutôt corsé, c'est au final exactement ce qu'on espérait. S'il surprendra moins les joueurs qu'un Shovel Knight ou un The Messenger, qui allaient plus loin dans leurs ambitions, il reste une bonne expérience pour les fans du genre.

Cyber Shadow is the exciting product of melding memorable NES classics such as Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden. It's difficult and frustrating at times, but the stylish 8-bit look, bopping soundtrack and enjoyable gameplay result in a quality action-platformer.

En définitive, Cyber Shadow est une réussite. Clair dés le départ sur ses intentions, il se pose comme un excellent hommage aux jeux du genre dont il reprend tous les meilleurs éléments pour les rendre accessibles aujourd’hui. Oui le jeu est difficile, mais rien comparé aux titres originaux de la NES qui accusaient les problèmes techniques de l’époque. En outre, il reste accessible à tous type de joueurs et joueuses fans de challenges et notamment de plateformers 2D exigeants qui convoquent vos meilleurs réflexes. Jamais injuste dans sa difficulté, le titre de Mechanical Head Studios condense à merveille l’essence d’une époque malgré un manque de personnalité évident. Un très bon élève qui connaît ses gammes mais qui manque malheureusement d’une petite touche d’audace, de génie peut-être, comme on pouvait en trouver dans The Messenger par exemple, bien plus ambitieux et inspiré. Quoi qu’il en soit, si on ne l’attendait pas plus que ça, Cyber Shadow tranche dans le vif avec maîtrise et prouve une fois de plus que l’approche old-school regorge de richesses.

Cyber Shadow è un gioco che gareggia bene fino agli ultimi cento metri, in quello scatto finale che avrebbe dovuto essere la somma di tutte le abilità apprese fino a quel momento. Sebbene il level design non sia mai stato di grandissimo impatto, fino a un preciso punto ha adempiuto al compito di guidare il giocatore nella consapevolezza delle proprie potenzialità, nonostante l'eccessiva presenza di situazioni mortali; la voglia di alzare, senza ragione, l'asticella della difficoltà lo rende un'esperienza frustrante proprio in chiusura, spezzando un ritmo ben gestito e facendogli fare un passo indietro laddove avrebbe dovuto brillare.

Shovel Knight was an example of an indie platformer that did hold up its end of the deal on both ends and that comparison doesn’t work in Cyber Shadow’s favor. Its boss fights and soundtrack can compete with other modern indie greats, but the rest of its gameplay inherits many of the antiquated parts that have been stripped out in other thoughtful throwbacks. This dichotomy makes Cyber Shadow a lot like its protagonist as it is made up of parts both old and new. But unlike Shadow, Cyber Shadow is made up of obsolete pieces, resulting in a rusty, defective cyber ninja that’s stuck in the wrong time period.
