Phoenix Point: Year One Edition è un gioco di strategia, tattica e gestione sviluppato da Snapshot Games in via del tutto indipendente. E’ disponibile su Steam, Stadia, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4 e Xbox One. A distanza di un anno dalla sua pubblicazione originale, assistiamo ad un’evoluzione ed una qualità raggiunta che rasenta la perfezione stilistica di genere. Al di là delle criticità tecniche di cui il gioco soffriva, appena rilasciato, la costante ottimizzazione e la correzione tramite patch, ha portato al risultato di un gioco praticamente inattaccabile. Tecnicamente ben fatto, ritmi di gioco pressoché perfetti, sfida sempre all’altezza e nemici che si adattano allo stile di gioco dell’utente rendono ogni partita diversa dalle altre. Ogni ora di gioco diversa dalla precedente. Se di peli nell’uovo dobbiamo iniziare a parlare, possiamo dire che non è un gioco per tutti. Che non sfonderà mai come titolo “cult” al pari di produzioni più blasonate. Che qualcuno potrebbe trovare ostici il suo grado di sfida e la sua curva di apprendimento. A questi, inviteremmo a fare una passeggiata su XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, prima di millantare che Phoenix Point sia “peggiore”.

Phoenix Point è certamente un buon gioco, che però soffre di un paragone impietoso, quello con War of the Chosen. Uscito oltre due anni fa, il titolo Firaxis rimane a tutt'oggi la migliore incarnazione di X-COM sul mercato. Il gioco del team di Gollop, invece, ferma restando la solidità del design e alcune ottime idee, soffre dell'opacità di alcune meccaniche, di un certo eccesso di microgestione e di un relativa penuria di contenuti. Alla fin fine, dipende dalle aspettative: considerato come titolo a sé, Phoenix Point ha il suo fascino un po' vintage; il trono della strategia a turni rimane, però, un traguardo irraggiungibile.

Phoenix Point will appeal to you if you're a big fan of the new XCOM games but wish they had more complexity. If you're turned off by punishing strategy and a hands-off approach, Phoenix Point is not for you.

Phoenix Point offers a great return to a more complex, more involving, if not a little too slow (at times) version of the XCOM style of game. Featuring a massive amount of customisation and personalisation, from the building of your own personal Earth-saving force as well as diplomacy with the surviving factions, you have a massive amount to sink your teeth into. Add onto this some of the best tactical gameplay around and a very replayable nature, you have something that will suck you in. There are issues, it can grind to a halt at times and it can also feel a little repetitive with repeated side-missions. In the long run, this is a great game and one that is well worth spending your time with.

Malgré certains défauts évoqués plus haut, Phoenix Point n’est tout de même pas un jeu à laisser de côté. Si effectivement sa difficulté qui n’est pas toujours bien gérée pourra en rebuter plus d’un, il propose assez de bonnes idées pour que les fans de tactical au tour par tour y trouvent très certainement leur bonheur. Maintenant, il faut espérer que les principaux défauts techniques, comme des bugs souvent handicapants ou une technique pas toujours bien gérée, soient rapidement corrigés avant le portage du titre sur console, prévu pour le courant de l’année 2020.

Phoenix Point has a lot of interesting ideas to contribute to the revitalized turn-based tactics genre but many of them are in need refining and balancing. Things like managing faction relationships and disabling individual enemy body parts are great, and it strikes a good balance of complexity with inventory management. At the same time, it’s woefully underdeveloped in certain areas like mission variety and base-building, and a late-game difficulty spike is so severe and unfair-feeling that it crushed the spirit of this XCOM veteran – twice. Combine that with a general lack of polish and it leaves Phoenix Point in a state that still feels very experimental and unrefined – but it’s an interesting experiment, to be sure.
