Layers of Fear 2023 est tout bonnement réussi. Même si ce n'est pas une nouveauté, il faut dire qu'il a été arrangé aux petits oignons ! De nouveaux graphismes avec l'Unreal Engine 5, une nouvelle protagoniste pour relier les deux jeux, l'ancien DLC plus un nouveau ! Sans oublier l'ambiance sonore qui a également été travaillée et cette superbe atmosphère horrifique qui ne se calme pratiquement jamais ! Alors n'hésitez plus, prenez votre courage à deux mains et faites attention dans le noir...

Esta versión actualizada de la saga de Bloober Team es más que un remake. En lo visual y el audio el juego cumple con creces, ofreciendo una experiencia aún más opresiva que la que pudimos disfrutar hace unos años. Además, el hecho de que el equipo de Bloober Team haya orquestado tal gesta a la hora de dar forma a toda una saga, añadiendo una nueva historia e intentando dar coherencia a todo un universo de terror, tanto para los fans como para los nuevos jugadores, y que en el camino le haya salido bien, es de aplaudir.

Layers of Fear 2023 stylishly combines Bloober Team’s flagship games into one beautifully terrifying definitive edition. The reimagined and drop dead gorgeous visuals built entirely from the ground up alone are reason enough to revisit these titles, but the added cherries on top are the brand new chapters that wrap all the narratives together. It’s a must play for anyone into psychedelic and psychological horror experiences, but may come off a little underwhelming for anyone looking for something truly scary.

Bloober Team ha omaggiato la sua serie con un pacchetto aggiornato ed esteso, sia dal punto di vista ludico, sia in materia di presentazione visiva. Grazie ad Unreal Engine 5 abbiamo affrontato un viaggio del brivido ancor più immersivo, forte peraltro di qualche inedita soluzione di gameplay. I difetti del secondo capitolo sono rimasti più o meno invariati, e crediamo che gli sviluppatori avrebbero potuto provare a limarli con più convinzione. Detto questo, l’operato del collettivo polacco ci ha convinto, quindi non possiamo che consigliare l'esperienza agli estimatori del genere.

Layers of Fear Bloober Team riprende in mano il proprio titolo di esordio nel panorama degli horror psicologici con una nuova consapevolezza. Layers of Fear non si limita a riproporre, in una veste tecnica moderna, il titolo originario, bensì tutta la serie (e relativi DLC) in un nuovo contesto narrativo, per un progetto a metà tra remaster e remake. Un pacchetto dunque capace di regalare suggestioni e brividi, pur preservando il gameplay estremamente ridotto delle versioni originali. Proprio questa è la chiave di lettura che vi potrebbe portare ad apprezzare (o meno) la produzione: se amate il brivido psicologico, il progetto saprà conquistarvi. Se, viceversa, apprezzate qualcosa di maggiormente concreto e palpabile (sia ludicamente, sia narrativamente), il titolo potrebbe non centrare il bersaglio. En definitiva, esta colección nos confirma lo que ya sabíamos: el primer Layers of Fear es una experiencia que, aunque predecible, merece la pena darle una oportunidad y descubrir los orígenes de Bloober Team en el género del terror psicológico, mientras que su continuación es una obra tan insípida como olvidable. Es una pena que Bloober no haya querido ser más ambiciosa con esta revisión de sus obras, pues se aprecia una falta de consistencia. Por ejemplo, las notas de los coleccionables que encontramos en la primera entrega vienen acompañadas de diálogos, mientras que en la segunda parte no. Además, en lo que respecta a la jugabilidad no hay grandes mejoras, no queda esa sensación que sí pretende el estudio de sentir que estás jugando a una reinvención de ambos títulos combinados. Es probable que si ya has disfrutado anteriormente de Layers of Fear aquí encuentres un pedacito de todo aquello que te gustó con nuevos elementos y un lavado de cara visual que se agradece. Pero al mismo tiempo, puede decepcionar el hecho de que se haya perdido la oportunidad de ser más consistente e impresionar.

Mit „Layers of Fear“ ist Serienschöpfer Bloober Team und den Anshar Studios ein durchaus stimmiges Gesamtpaket gelungen. Mit Teil 1 und 2, sämtlichen DLCs und sogar neuen Geschichten bietet die Mischung aus Spielesammlung, Remaster und Remake genügend Umfang, um Freunde narrativer (Action-) Adventures im Horrorgenre rund zehn Stunden lang solide zu unterhalten. Schade nur, dass der spielerische Inhalt der surrealen Reisen in die Psyche der Protagonistinnen und Protagonisten nach wie vor recht dünn ausfällt. Neben simplen Schlüsselrätseln wirken auch die neuen Laternenmechaniken auf der Flucht etwas aufgesetzt, statt wirklich zu fordern. Trotz solcher Schwächen und einiger monotoner Phasen besitzt die Reise durch wild wechselnde, bizarr inszenierte Schauplätze aber ihren Reiz. In der getesteten PS5-Version profitiert sie vor allem von der gründlich überarbeiteten Inszenierung inklusive Raytracing und hübscher Lumen-Beleuchtung aus der Unreal Engine 5. Nach und nach enthüllen Fundstücke und Symbolik immer mehr spannende Details um den gescheiterten Maler und weitere Tragödien.

Layers of Fear è indubbiamente bellissimo a vedersi, grazie all'ottimo lavoro svolto con Unreal Engine 5 (che era poi l'obiettivo dietro questa riedizione). Non guasta neppure l'idea della torcia, che permette un approccio meno frustrante ad alcune fasi del gioco nonché la possibilità di interagire meglio con i dintorni, nonostante di contro semplifichi le situazioni di tensione contro i nostri inseguitori. Dove tuttavia pecca, in impostazioni passate ma anche nell'inedita sezione della scrittrice, è nel fatto di volersi basare sempre sulle stesse soluzioni per creare tensione, ruotandole tra loro ma ricadendo alla fine in un loop molto prevedibile che penalizza l'atmosfera altrimenti ottima creata soprattutto dal sound design.

Layers of Fear serves up a series of atmospheric and often surreal trips through the shattered psyches of some seriously tortured artists. It’s made all the more eye-catching thanks to Unreal Engine 5, and the addition of the flashlight provides some interesting new ways to both interact with your surroundings and mitigate the frustration of the stalker encounters previously suffered in the original games. However, its sleight of hand scare tactics are still all too clearly telegraphed and this predictable formula grew stale long before I reached the end of each of its main story threads. Ultimately Layers of Fear comes across as a largely scare-free 13-hour crawl through a string of mildly creepy hallways as opposed to a truly terrifying trek into darkness.

The unforgivable shortcomings in Layers of Fear are a shame, because the core tools that the game is built with could be used to forge something pretty alright. The series’ issues with mental health and representation are foundational and in dire need of more evaluation than additional DLC can provide, but there’s a genuinely interesting examination of player and space here that is crying out for a better framing. Layers of Fear has all the pieces, but Bloober Team seem content to toss those bricks around an empty block instead of building something of value.
