Kao the Kangaroo does an excellent job making me nostalgic for an old-school 3D platforming series I’d never played. It doesn’t try too hard to be gimmicky, packing a colourful aesthetic and light-hearted humor to carry it through the parts where it feels unoriginal. You probably won’t find it particularly challenging outside of a few tougher platforming segments -- combat’s rather easy, and some may find the collectathon premise off-putting. Still, I never found it dull and Tate’s done a fine job reviving this obscure mascot, even if you can spot Kao’s many modern influences from a mile off. If all you’re after is a comfy platformer that’s not particularly demanding, you’ll find an excellent choice here.

Contrat rempli pour Tate Multimedia, qui avec Kao the Kangaroo modernise un héros du début des années 2000 en surfant sur une recette que les amoureux du genre platformer 3D connaissent par coeur. Au croisement d’un Crash Bandicoot et d’un Spyro the Dragon, le titre du studio polonais propose une très belle aventure cartoon qui sent bon la madeleine de Proust, avec une aventure agréable, accessible et sans prise de tête. Seulement, Kao the Kangaroo ne va pas beaucoup plus loin que ça, et en insistant sur l’hommage et en souffrant de quelques problèmes de finition, le jeu ne parvient pas à proposer des éléments marquants bien à lui qui le rendraient incontournable.

Kao the Kangaroo is a mixed bag. Far from bad, it offers decent platforming across several well-designed levels, though some issues hold it back. Some bugs certainly impact gameplay, with camera control also a gameplay-inhibiting factor. The lack of real challenge throughout most of the game will also be a limiting factor for replay value, though there is a level of exploration and several collectibles to find. While certainly not up there as one of the best platformers, Kao isn't a bad way to pass your time, and it's fortunately not priced as high as most new releases.

Kao the Kangaroo returns with a big hop in his step and a bright future ahead of him. The quality gameplay and the ease of play for all ages encourage exploration while the occasionally challenging boss fights and platforming encourage cooperation, especially if you're playing with a younger gamer. There are some unfortunate audio bugs and the occasional visual glitch, but as a package, Kao the Kangaroo is leaps and bounds ahead of some recent family-friendly releases.

Kao è un titolo tutto sommato valido, ottimo se si è amanti dei platform che spopolarono tra la fine degli anni '90 e l'inizio degli anni 2000 come Crash e Spyro. La qualità viene però sporcata da tutta una serie di problemi tecnici, alcuni che quasi farebbero pensare a un'alpha o quantomeno a una beta preliminare. Consigliabile ludicamente, ma a livello tecnico ampiamente rivedibile.;s
