È valsa la pena di aspettare tutto questo tempo per Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, non abbiamo dubbi in proposito. Il videogioco firmato ancora una volta da Spike Chunsoft non è magari perfetto sul piano visivo né risolve i ben noti limiti del genere degli arena fighter, ma ottimizza e sostiene l'impianto quanto basta per fare in modo che i pur frenetici e spettacolari combattimenti fra i tantissimi personaggi che compongono il roster del gioco si svolgano in maniera piacevole e soddisfacente, in un tripudio di fanservice che non mancherà di entusiasmare i tantissimi fan di Dragon Ball. Il pacchetto è un vero e proprio concentrato di contenuti, destinato anche a crescere grazie ai giocatori (vedi le battaglie personalizzate), e in questo riuscito mix spicca l'ottimo lavoro svolto con le storie alternative degli Episodi Sparking, capaci di aggiungere freschezza e interesse a un percorso narrativo che ormai conosciamo fin troppo bene.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero è senza troppi giri di parole il gioco definitivo per ogni fan di Dragon Ball. Il suo sistema di combattimento riprende e migliora esponenzialmente quello dei vecchi capitoli per PS2, rendendo ogni battaglia il più simile possibile a quelle viste negli anime e nel manga dell’opera originale. Ottime anche le varie modalità, con quella dedicata alla storia che nasconde delle belle sorprese, e la Battaglia Personalizzata che ha il potenziale per far durare il gioco molto a lungo, solo per parlare dei contenuti dedicati al single player. A questo aggiungete un roster che definire imponente è dire poco e tante piccole chicche per i fan. Certo, i difetti non mancano, specialmente legati al bilanciamento dei combattenti, ma se siete degli accaniti appassionati di Dragon Ball non preoccupatevi, perché percepirete da ogni singola scelta compiuta dagli sviluppatori che questo gioco è davvero fatto per voi.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is an impressively robust celebration of all things Dragon Ball. It's just about as bombastic as arena fighters get, and while the game could do a much better job of teaching players the ropes, there's a technical depth to combat that makes the learning curve feel incredibly rewarding. Boasting a colossal character roster and some of the best anime-based visuals in gaming, Sparking! Zero is an absolute blast.

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero est l’adaptation ultime d’un jeu de combat en 3D, à la fois jouissif et accessible, que l’on aimerait voir pour tous les shônen en général. Le casting de base est si généreux qu’il fait facilement pardonner l’avalanche de DLC à venir. Non seulement nous avons droit à un jeu Dragon Ball époustouflant grâce à l’Unreal Engine 5, mais le souci du détail à tous les niveaux démontre clairement la volonté des développeurs de satisfaire les fans de longue date. Certes, on peut chipoter sur l’absence de certains costumes, décors ou personnages, mais il est impossible de nier l’énorme travail accompli pour répondre aux attentes colossales que ce titre suscitait. Tout simplement le meilleur jeu de combat Dragon Ball à ce jour, et il le restera sans doute pendant un très, très long moment.

There’s a certain familiarity in Metaphor: ReFantazio, but Atlus takes the principles of its already excellent RPGs and refines them in a way that effortlessly ushers you through its brutal, and sometimes beautiful, new fantasy world. The Archetype system and all the new wrinkles it added to the turn-based battles build upon a strong foundation, and the social elements are streamlined to better deliver the most important aspects of the stories they tell. The sense of adventure you get from traveling across the kingdom and the powerful sense of purpose you have to do so drive its memorable journey, distinguishing itself from those that came before it. When I finally closed the book on Metaphor after 80 hours, I felt a unique warmth in its message, because it’s driven by the ideals of a just society smartly contextualized in a unique metanarrative. Metaphor: ReFantazio is poetic, and at times, idealistic, but it also understands its complexities and that change requires action, and that even far-fetched fantasy stories can serve as inspiration to make our world a better place.

Di certo Metaphor: ReFantazio non era un salto nel buio per Atlus, visto che lo Studio Zero è formato da un pugno di veterani dell'azienda e del genere JPRG. Eppure, nel mercato odierno, presentare una nuova proprietà intellettuale (peraltro con un nome impronunciabile e con un limitato battage pubblicitario) rappresenta una scommessa notevole, e siamo felici che il publisher giapponese l'abbia stravinta. Non siamo ai livelli di eccellenza di Persona 5 Royal, e d'altronde in questo caso siamo all'inizio di un cammino e non nella piena maturità del franchise, ma la libertà ed il grado di personalizzazione garantiti dal sistema degli archetipi e la riuscita ibridazione tra il rodato sistema di combattimento dei Persona e le fasi action che lo precedono sono pietre angolari su cui Studio Zero ed Atlus potranno costruire in futuro. Alla luce della differente ambientazione e della maturità dei temi trattati, Metaphor: ReFantazio non è solo un passaggio obbligato per tutti i fan dei precedenti lavori di Hashino-san e del suo team, ma anche per tutti coloro che non amassero l'ambientazione contemporanea giapponese ed il cast di adolescenti tipico del franchise Persona. La prima pietra è stata posta e le basi sono di altissimo livello: vedremo quale sarà il possibile futuro di Metaphor.

L'ultima fatica di Katsura Hashino e del suo Studio Zero è un grandissimo GDR giapponese con un problema di identità: è Persona calato in un contesto fantasy metareferenziale con evidentissimi richiami alle dinamiche collaudate della serie Atlus e del progenitore Shin Megami Tensei. Al netto di un comparto tecnico arretrato ma compensato da una direzione artistica eccellente, Metaphor: ReFantazio è un JRPG sospeso in un limbo tra innovazione e tradizione che piacerà immensamente a tutti quelli che amano questa particolare deriva, anche se sarebbe stato più entusiasmante giocare qualcosa di completamente nuovo.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a final flash from the past, sometimes to a fault, as demonstrated by its archaic menus and remedial training tools. Its Episode Battles have the kind of reaction-heavy difficulty that doesn’t really exist in most games these days, more than once crossing the line between challenging and frustrating. But the feeling of traveling back to a simpler time when games didn’t have to be balanced or competitive to be fun is a good one, especially when that action stays so true to that of the show it’s recreating. Reliving a story that was foundational to my youth, looking and sounding as great as I remember it, with the opportunity to alter it in sometimes dramatic new ways is clever, and the addition of tools to attempt to create our own stories could elevate the experiment even further if a community can figure out how to make the most of them.
