Still Wakes the Deep è un'avventura horror che nella sua completa linearità funziona: racconta una storia tragica, spogliata di complotti o spiegazioni contorte per mostrarsi in tutto il proprio orrore. I personaggi sono persone semplici e umanissime nella loro disperazione, rese ancora più verosimili da un ottimo doppiaggio. In diverse occasioni saremo chiamati a sopravvivere tanto alle creature che popolano Beira D quanto ai pericoli strutturali propri di una piattaforma in procinto di affondare, il che distanzia il gioco da una semplice esperienza walking simulator in chiave horror. Lato gameplay c'è poca carne al fuoco soprattutto per quanto riguarda le fasi nascondino per superare le creature quasi tutte identiche tra loro, ma le meccaniche si sposano comunque abbastanza bene con l'impianto narrativo. Nel complesso, anche solo per l'ambientazione singolare e per un orrore che non cerca spiegazioni, mostrandosi nella sua crudità, Still Wakes the Deep è un gioco che senza reinventare la ruota sa offrire un'esperienza interessante.

Still Wakes the Deep è il più classico dei walking simulator. Si tratta di un horror psicologico dai sistemi di gioco striminziti, sin troppo basilari, con interazioni comandate, strade sempre guidate e nessuna reale sfida per il giocatore. Trattandosi di un titolo fortemente orientato alla narrazione, con una storia che funziona piuttosto bene e un'idea di base da manuale dell'horror, tutte queste scelte a monte potrebbero essere comprensibili; ma se al di là del comparto tecnico non si notano differenze con un gioco del 2010, allora è evidente come le mancanze siano sin troppe per chi aveva l'intenzione di ripresentarsi sul mercato con ben altre ambizioni.

Still Wakes The Deep è un'opera afflitta da numerosi problemi. La coerenza tra racconto e gameplay lascia spesso a desiderare, con pesanti conseguenze sull'efficacia della narrazione e delle fasi horror. Una volta terminato il gioco, si ha la sensazione che qualcosa durante lo sviluppo non sia andato per il verso giusto, o che il team non sia riuscito a concretizzare la propria visione. Bocciare il gioco di The Chinese Room sarebbe ingiusto, eppure rimane il rammarico per un titolo che avrebbe potuto dare molto di più, specie considerando la storia dello studio.

Fans of this studio’s previous outings will have a good idea of the general skeleton awaiting them in Still Wakes the Deep, though critically kicked up several notches. But even those who usually prefer a more open-ended gameplay-driven experience will find some pleasant surprises awaiting them here. The Chinese Room have pushed the boundaries of their story-focused formula by involving the player more in the act of traversal, from deliberate (and very short) stealth sections to QTE sequences popping up during panicked platforming. Most important is the masterful marriage of a chilling suspense story with fantastic presentation values and plenty of frights to go around, including both grotesque body horror and existential dread. If that sounds like an enjoyable Saturday night to you, then consider this your invitation to take a vacation to the North Sea – I hear there’s an opening that’s just become available on a nearby oil rig.

De 3DS-versie was destijds al behoorlijk middelmatig en deze remaster van Monster Hunter Stories weet daar geen verandering in te brengen. Vooral de suffe en kinderachtige manier van verhaalvertelling staat ons behoorlijk tegen.

Monster Hunter Stories está bien, es divertido y tiene características fundamentales de la saga principal adaptadas a un RPG táctico. Sin embargo, en general, es el mismo juego con un retexturizado y mayor resolución que la entrega de 3DS, hecho con no demasiado mimo, para adaptarlo a consolas modernas.

Atlus ha hecho algo más que un simple port con algunas mejoras y un trabajo de chapa y pintura. Con Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance ha dado a luz a un juego acertado y que supera a su predecesor, un desafío a las convenciones de la propia saga y una puerta de entrada más accesible para los nuevos jugadores, pero que los más veteranos seguirán disfrutando.

There’s simply nothing else on the market right now like this series – a tonally unhinged pop-cosmopolitan-apocrypha-anime-apocalyptic JRPG that plays like Pokemon on steroids. Just like the best SMT games, its plot is rich as syrup and just as opaque. Read too close into the nonsensical jumble of mythological creatures and themes and you’re sure to be nauseated. However, supposing you can appreciate the excess of everything and have played a few turned-based RPGs before, Vengeance is simply the most approachable and engrossing core Shin Megami Tensei game currently on the market and the best way to check out this weirdo series.
