Unicorn Overlord impressionne autant par sa richesse tactique inépuisable que par sa logique de reconquête ambitieuse qui redonne son éclat à un univers médiéval fantastique trop souvent poussiéreux. Un jeu fascinant !

Alors, au final, que penser de ce WWE 2K24 et est-ce que l’on a entre les mains la référence tant attendue des fans de catch ? Si certains points méritent encore un peu de boulot, on est à des années lumière de ce que l’on nous avait proposé il y a seulement 4 ans de cela avec WWE 2K20. Un épisode peu satisfaisant pour beaucoup de joueurs de la licence. Le roster est énorme, l’immersion et le rendu visuel propres, malgré les quelques défauts que l’on a évoqués. Côté gameplay, les contrôles sont faciles à maîtriser et la courbe de progression très agréable. L’hommage aux 40 ans de Wrestlemania dans le mode Showcase est quant à lui totalement réussi et même si ce n’est pas ce qui vous intéresse, vous trouverez forcément votre bonheur dans l’un des nombreux modes de jeu. Il nous semble donc que si l’on n’a pas encore le jeu parfait pour les fans de catch et de la WWE, on commence quand même à sérieusement s’en rapprocher.

Remarkably approachable with complex systems waiting for those willing to lose themselves to it, Balatro successfully assembles the infinitely fun gameplay loop that every great roguelike sets out to create. It takes the fundamentally simple nature of poker’s scoring hands and shuffles in deep mechanics that don’t feel like a chore to learn but are always thrilling to exploit. A deck-builder of endlessly satisfying proportions, it's the sort of fun that threatens to derail whole weekend plans as you stay awake far too late staring into the eyes of a jester tempting you in for just one more run. Simply put, Balatro is no joker, but in fact, ace.

But the reality is that if you’ve read this far you’ve a good idea of what to expect going in to WWE 2K24. While there are improvements that could be made, there’s no doubt this is an excellent way for fans of the graps to get even more enjoyment out of the sports entertainment lifestyle. There’s so much to do across so many modes, such a hefty creation suite that is all but limitless, and underneath all that a fun if sometimes frustrating gameplay system that will serve perfectly well until the next time out.

Reflecting on the incredibly diverse and remarkably creative world I explored across my 45-hour journey, any issues I had with Unicorn Overlord ended up feeling like nothing more than nitpicks. The tactical combat system is unique and complex while also being easy to understand, expertly blending mechanics from many of its peers with smart new additions of its own. The interesting terrain across the continent of Fevrith makes every fight feel unique, with some of the best map gimmicks I’ve seen in any strategy RPG. Because the campaign is told through the eyes of a diverse and creative cast, its trope-filled fantasy story is elevated in a way that a more traditional storytelling style wouldn't manage. The shorter, more personal stories work wonderfully to support a loop of exploration and liberation that had me begging to see one more tale told, one more town rebuilt, and one more battle fought.

Even amidst a huge strategy RPG boom, Unicorn Overlord stands out. It’s a smorgasbord of visual delights, intricate systems, and addictive gameplay loops that all come together to create a delightfully thrilling and deep tactical RPG. It’s so easy to get absorbed into everything the game offers, and we lapped it all up. Vanillaware has long been known for creating beautiful-looking games with unique twists on genres, but with 13 Sentinels and now Unicorn Overlord, this developer should be on absolutely everyone’s radar.
