While it feels like a not insignificant step down from the breakout hit Until Dawn, Supermassive Games’ latest attempt at interactive horror still serves up some compelling thrills and chills. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan definitely gets better the deeper you get into its story, but traveling that path is fraught with technical issues and questionable narrative direction more often than it should be.

Pur non restituendo il senso di avventura e il collezionismo sfrenato dei giochi che compongono la serie principale di Game Freak, Pokémon Masters può rappresentare un ottimo passatempo per chi non è mai sazio di lotte tra Pocket Monsters: la produzione riesce infatti a intrattenere con una storia longeva e una discreta quantità di contenuti. Il gameplay, che unisce novità e tradizione, si dimostra frenetico e veloce, ma al tempo stesso non perde le caratteristiche che da un ventennio animano le lotte Pokémon. Al netto di qualche performance grafica non molto brillante, con la speranza che le funzionalità online riescano a impreziosire la profondità dell'esperienza, il nuovo gioco mobile targato The Pokémon Company si presenta ai nastri di partenza in una forma abbastanza interessante.

Maître de l'horreur vidéoludique, Supermassive Games parvient à redonner un coup de fouet au genre narratif avec Man of Medan. Le premier volet de son anthologie rappelant American Horror Story dans l'approche introduit un mode coopératif en ligne très original. Man of Medan offre surtout le choix dans la manière d'apprécier une aventure où chaque décision compte (ou fait croire qu'elle compte). Seul, à deux avec un inconnu ou jusqu'à cinq sur un canapé, le titre édité par Bandai Namco se déguste d'une traite. Et se révèle être un candidat idéal pour tuer le temps lors d'une soirée Halloween.

Man of Medan mette sul piatto una formula già vista e collaudata, pur palesando alcune evidenti incertezze di fondo. L'idea di ambientare il gioco a bordo di una nave fantasma - prendendo spunto dalla misteriosa vicenda della SS Ourang Medan - è interessante, ma ci saremmo attesi una maggiore incisività della componente horror, nonché una migliore capacità della storia di donare emozioni forti, seppur condensata in poche ore. Per quanto la modalità cooperativa garantisca un'inedita variazione sul tema, e l'opera sia sostenuta da un ampio spettro di scelte legate alla sorte dei personaggi, riteniamo che si sia compiuto un passo indietro rispetto ad Until Dawn. Il contraltare è costituito dal prezzo, che potrebbe rappresentare un incentivo all'acquisto per quella nicchia di pubblico ancora interessata al genere.

At its best, Man of Medan is every bit as gripping, beautiful, and giddily silly as Until Dawn, but technical issues, a rushed story, and a confusing approach to player choice betray the limited resources the game’s creators had to work with. Man of Medan is currently the best option for those desperate for more Until Dawn, but I'm hoping Supermassive Games can scare up something a little more substantial for future The Dark Pictures titles.

With simple asymmetric gameplay, this game is great for kids of all ages, and a worthy tie-in to the movie. While the unskippable trailer is a poke in the eye, there’s nothing better than the cackling of a five year old while he mercilessly throws his would-be helpers around a submarine full of bombs.

Con Man of Medan, La Dark Pictures Anthology parte col freno a mano tirato, vittima com'è di una storia scontata e banale, e di una struttura che mostra in questo caso tutti i suoi punti deboli. Relegare il destino di un personaggio a un solo tasto premuto fuori tempo o a una decisione presa a causa di una cattiva lettura, è qualcosa che non riesce davvero a convincere, soprattutto considerando che basta davvero un attimo per farsi cogliere in castagna. Per il futuro della serie, Supermassive Games ha la necessità vitale di puntare decisamente più in alto di così.
