While it feels like a not insignificant step down from the breakout hit Until Dawn, Supermassive Games’ latest attempt at interactive horror still serves up some compelling thrills and chills. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan definitely gets better the deeper you get into its story, but traveling that path is fraught with technical issues and questionable narrative direction more often than it should be.

Pur non restituendo il senso di avventura e il collezionismo sfrenato dei giochi che compongono la serie principale di Game Freak, Pokémon Masters può rappresentare un ottimo passatempo per chi non è mai sazio di lotte tra Pocket Monsters: la produzione riesce infatti a intrattenere con una storia longeva e una discreta quantità di contenuti. Il gameplay, che unisce novità e tradizione, si dimostra frenetico e veloce, ma al tempo stesso non perde le caratteristiche che da un ventennio animano le lotte Pokémon. Al netto di qualche performance grafica non molto brillante, con la speranza che le funzionalità online riescano a impreziosire la profondità dell'esperienza, il nuovo gioco mobile targato The Pokémon Company si presenta ai nastri di partenza in una forma abbastanza interessante.

Man of Medan si mantiene a galla grazie ad un'atmosfera ricca di fascino, ad una struttura multiplayer sufficientemente originale e ad un pregevole senso di scoperta investigativa che sorregge la pur limitata esplorazione. Le numerose possibilità di scelta non sono però sempre supportate in modo adeguato da una sceneggiatura fin troppo prevedibile e da un ricorso ad un orrore alquanto manieristico, che a lungo andare finisce per ridurre la tensione. Le terribili disavventure di cinque ragazzi a bordo di una nave fantasma sono comunque solo il primo tassello di un progetto antologico più ampio, che merita di essere accolto con estremo interesse, e che intende farci capire come la paura possegga davvero tantissimi volti.

At its best, Man of Medan is every bit as gripping, beautiful, and giddily silly as Until Dawn, but technical issues, a rushed story, and a confusing approach to player choice betray the limited resources the game’s creators had to work with. Man of Medan is currently the best option for those desperate for more Until Dawn, but I'm hoping Supermassive Games can scare up something a little more substantial for future The Dark Pictures titles.

It is clear that an enormous amount of effort has gone into the creation of Whipseey and the Lost Atlas, but the very basic menu, absence of save points and lack of character development could be seen as a slight weakness compared to similar games within this genre. But for those who enjoy playing something that requires careful timing and accuracy to complete, I would almost certainly recommend giving this game a go, especially given the very reasonable price point, for an evening or two of light-hearted entertainment.

Con Man of Medan, La Dark Pictures Anthology parte col freno a mano tirato, vittima com'è di una storia scontata e banale, e di una struttura che mostra in questo caso tutti i suoi punti deboli. Relegare il destino di un personaggio a un solo tasto premuto fuori tempo o a una decisione presa a causa di una cattiva lettura, è qualcosa che non riesce davvero a convincere, soprattutto considerando che basta davvero un attimo per farsi cogliere in castagna. Per il futuro della serie, Supermassive Games ha la necessità vitale di puntare decisamente più in alto di così.

Control se déroule dans un monde paranormal aussi étrange que captivant, que je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher d’explorer. Les compétences psychiques polyvalentes de Jesse et son arme principale permettent des affrontements à distance palpitants, et explorer les méandres changeants de l’Ancienne Maison s’avère incroyablement plaisant, grâce à un solide casting de soutien, à un scénario bien écrit et aux nombreux indices intrigants distillés au fil de l’aventure. Pour toutes ces raisons, l’histoire personnelle de Jesse semble en comparaison bien secondaire, mais l'univers de Control se révèle assez riche pour que je continue à m’investir et cherche à découvrir le moindre de ses secrets, ce même une fois l’intrigue principale terminée.
