Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection feels like an odd release to recommend, but we’d be doing you a disservice to suggest you pass on it. On one hand, the three games are undeniably solid DRPGs that are worth your time and attention. On the other, the cost at launch feels astronomical for what are essentially straight, no-frills HD ports of decade-old portable titles. This collection is worthwhile because this series is and always has been great, but the collection itself feels subpar given the rather lackluster effort that has gone into bringing them to modern hardware. We’d still give Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection a recommendation, but with the caveat that you’re probably better off either waiting for a deep sale or just buying one of the games—we would recommend Etrian Odyssey III the most out of these three. Etrian Origins Collection may not be the 'definitive’ re-release that many hoped it would be, but these games are well-respected in the DRPG space for good reason and it's great to see them on Switch.

Etrian Odyssey wird für immer einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen haben und ich bin sehr glücklich darüber, wie gut das HD-Remaster für die Nintendo Switch gelungen ist. Der zweigeteilte Bildschirm funktioniert intuitiv und brachte mich nie aus der Game-Loop, die sich von einem Spiel ins nächste übertrug. Trotz der durchaus gelungenen optischen, technischen und auditiven Performance, spielt sich Etrian Odyssey nicht ganz so reibungslos, wie auf dem DS. Trotzdem sind Neuerungen, wie die Übersicht der Statistiken zu Gegnern oder das Auto-Mapping mehr als willkommen. Klingt etwas paradox, ist aber nur logisch, denn keines der Etrian Odyssey Spiele wurde für diese Hardware konzipiert und das ist auch okay.

Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance Of The Slayer is a competent shooter that successfully evokes the good and bad of a first-person shooter made in the late 90s. Its dated presentation is backed up by great moment-to-moment gunplay and fascinating levels. It’s not an easy recommendation to anyone, but if you stumble upon this game on Game Pass and decide to give it a shot, you might be pleasantly surprised by how high-quality this low-quality-looking shooter is. You can’t polish a turd. But what if underneath the turd is a polished gem? That’s Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance Of The Slayer.

Graficamente arretrato, per nulla originale, volgare. Ma ha anche dei difetti. Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer è in tutto e per tutto un tributo, un emulo degli FPS dei primi anni '90. Proprio per questo è difficile sconsigliarlo a chi ha vissuto quegli anni e oggi li rimpiange. L'art design, il ritmo dell'azione, la concezione del level design è volutamente derivativo. Gli sviluppatori hanno scientemente e volutamente ricalcato e riproposto le stesse formule che fecero la fortuna di giochi come Doom e Wolfenstein. Le sei, sette ore che impiegherete per compiere la vendetta di Zane sono piacevoli, adrenaliniche, divertenti al punto giusto, ma vi appassionerete davvero a questo gioco solo se siete inclini allo stile proposto. Se cercate qualcosa di originale, di innovativo, che sia al passo con i tempi guardate altrove.

Un autogoal per Piccolo Studio e il suo After Us che, per quanto concerne il concept, si tratta di un’opera artisticamente lodevole, sia dal punto di vista dell’estetica che delle musiche, che ne riescono a catturare l’essenza attraverso poche note. In quanto ad esecuzione, invece, ci sono parecchie criticità che vanno riconosciute. Prima fra tutti è la mancanza di originalità lato gameplay. L’opera difficilmente verrà ricordata, in quanto fa parte di un genere che ormai è stato proposto e riproposto in migliaia di salse differenti. I combattimenti presenti sono anti climatici ed immotivati. I livelli, invece, risultano ben congeniati e dotati di caratteristiche uniche, che rendono l’esperienza un po’ più variegata rispetto a quello che ci aspettavamo. Anche dinnanzi al comparto relativo alle prestazioni, ci ritroviamo perplessi: è un’opera dell’attuale generazione, in cui si presentano freeze e cali repentini di frame, anche se giocata in modalità prestazioni a 60 fps.

Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection è un'ottima raccolta di tre titoli che hanno fatto la storia del loro genere. L'esperienza di gioco potrà risultare anacronistica ai più giovani, ma è un'operazione nostalgia che funziona benissimo: al di là di alcuni aspetti penalizzati dalla console, come la necessità di doversi procurare un pennino non in dotazione per mappare al meglio i dungeon, siamo dinanzi a un ritorno di un pezzo di storia del Nintendo DS. Tra l'altro, la mole contenutistica in seno al pacchetto è notevole, per la gioia dei patiti della serie.

As you can see from the screenshots, Planet of Lana is a thoroughly lovely game. Panoramas showcase picturesque azure skies, voluminous clouds, and the sliver of a colossal moon. If you’re relatively new to games with logic-based brainteasers, there’s a strong chance you’ll appreciate the journey. But for those with more experience in the puzzle and stealth genres, Lana’s looks will be the biggest draw.

I had a bloody excellent time with The Tartarus Key. It hit me hard with the nostalgic presentation, and hooked me in with clever, well-crafted, and almost perfectly pitched puzzles throughout.
