Rogue Legacy 2 porta ad un livello successivo il concetto di “more of the same”. I ragazzi di Cellar Door Games hanno sfornato un sequel che migliora, in tutto e per tutto, la formula vincente del primo capitolo, lavorando molto sulla varietà di ogni run, classi e spingendo forte anche sul comparto artistico, fresco di un 2D altamente convincente e solido. Un titolo venduto ad un prezzo super competitivo su Steam che, per sua stessa natura, vi porterà via un quantitativo di ore esagerato. Un titolo sicuramente da provare, sia per i fan del primo capitolo sia per quei giocatori alla ricerca di un livello di sfida adeguato, magari da poco “sopravvissuti” all’ultimo capolavoro di From Software.

Kao the Kangaroo does an excellent job making me nostalgic for an old-school 3D platforming series I’d never played. It doesn’t try too hard to be gimmicky, packing a colourful aesthetic and light-hearted humor to carry it through the parts where it feels unoriginal. You probably won’t find it particularly challenging outside of a few tougher platforming segments -- combat’s rather easy, and some may find the collectathon premise off-putting. Still, I never found it dull and Tate’s done a fine job reviving this obscure mascot, even if you can spot Kao’s many modern influences from a mile off. If all you’re after is a comfy platformer that’s not particularly demanding, you’ll find an excellent choice here.

Contrat rempli pour Tate Multimedia, qui avec Kao the Kangaroo modernise un héros du début des années 2000 en surfant sur une recette que les amoureux du genre platformer 3D connaissent par coeur. Au croisement d’un Crash Bandicoot et d’un Spyro the Dragon, le titre du studio polonais propose une très belle aventure cartoon qui sent bon la madeleine de Proust, avec une aventure agréable, accessible et sans prise de tête. Seulement, Kao the Kangaroo ne va pas beaucoup plus loin que ça, et en insistant sur l’hommage et en souffrant de quelques problèmes de finition, le jeu ne parvient pas à proposer des éléments marquants bien à lui qui le rendraient incontournable.

Kao the Kangaroo è un omaggio ai platform 3D dei tempi d'oro, che coglie l'occasione del 21esimo anniversario del canguro boxeur per presentarsi sotto forma di reboot. Nel complesso è un'esperienza accattivante, semplice, capace di intrattenere e divertire giocatori di ogni età a dispetto di una difficoltà generale tarata verso il basso. Chissà se sarà il trampolino di lancio per la nuova vità del simpatico Kao?

Kao The Kangaroo non vuole essere né più e né meno di un titolo che omaggia la vecchia scuola dei platform, decidendo di non seguire in alcun modo le ultime e naturali evoluzioni del genere. Se siete cultori di grandi classici sullo stile di Banjo-Kazooie potrete, a vostro personalissimo gusto, far lievitare il valore finale dell'opera per motivi strettamente affettivi. Nel farlo, però, dovrete considerare che manca al gioco una fase di pulizia finale del codice che potrebbe infastidirvi non poche volte, creando qualche singulto (glitch con tanto di riavvi forzati) durante la fruizione. Forse, a un personaggio già non tra i più conosciuti, serviva una spinta maggiore per imporsi.

Kao the Kangaroo is a mixed bag. Far from bad, it offers decent platforming across several well-designed levels, though some issues hold it back. Some bugs certainly impact gameplay, with camera control also a gameplay-inhibiting factor. The lack of real challenge throughout most of the game will also be a limiting factor for replay value, though there is a level of exploration and several collectibles to find. While certainly not up there as one of the best platformers, Kao isn't a bad way to pass your time, and it's fortunately not priced as high as most new releases.

Schön, dass immer mehr Studios ihre alten Hüpfmaskottchen aus dem Ruhestand holen. Dass selbst Randfiguren wie Kao the Kangaroo eine zweite Chance verdient haben, beweist sein neues Abenteuer allemal. In seiner Kernkompetenz kann der neue 3D-Plattformer meist überzeugen. Beim präzisen Hüpfen durch Lagunen und über schwebende Felsen entfaltet sich ein schöner, klassischer Spielfluss mit passend eingeflochtenen Rätseln. In puncto Abwechslung zieht Kao aber klar den Kürzeren gegen professioneller designte Persönlichkeiten wie Mario, Crash & Co. Ein weiterer Minuspunkt sind die simpel gestrickten Fließband-Kämpfe gegen oft überforderte Standardgegner. Trotz einiger Mankos bietet das Jump’n’Run aber das passende Programm für einen entspannten Nostalgie-Trip in eine einfachere Zeit. Ich frage mich, welcher Hüpf-Oldie wohl als nächstes zurückkehrt? Ich bin zumindest noch lange nicht satt!
