Dark Souls 2 for the PC is a far cleaner port attempt than the first Dark Souls port. The death of Games for Windows Live continues to mean good things for PC gaming, the potential to tweak up the graphics for the technically capable is still on offer, and the whole experience is far more gamer-friendly right from the get-go.

Those who enjoy older RPGs like the Wizardry and Might and Magic series should enjoy Demon Gaze. Those who are used to getting instant gratification and being able to level up their characters with the snap of the fingers will be disappointed. If you can get past the shortcomings of the story, high difficulty level, and scantily dressed women, then this game is a gem. Otherwise you may want to look at some RPGs to occupy your time with the Vita.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition is a great buy if you haven’t played a game in the series in a while, and are looking for something to hold you over while you wait for the PS4’s library of games to grow, but for fans, this is not the next generation leap forward that you were hoping for.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate combines the series’ trademark combat and exploration and tosses them into a sidescrolling platformer with surprisingly pleasant results. The Deluxe Edition upgrade doesn’t make a whole lot of meaningful additions apart from some new content and slightly better visuals, but it’s still a fun game, despite its flaws.

Disney Magical World is a fun romp with a plethora of objectives to complete and items to create, but by the time you find yourself running across the same stretch of land for the umpteenth time to gather more items for that next quest, the magic starts to fade.

Not all action RPGs are alike, and maybe my expectations of Ragnarok Odyssey ACE were too high after playing Dragon’s Crown. However, the small environments, the simple combat, and monotonous gameplay wore me down rather quickly. This would have been much better as a Vita-only release since the shortcomings stand out on the PS3. If you are on the move and like the monster hunting taking precedence over story, then you can probably find yourself enjoying ACE. If you want a story and more variety in combat, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

It’s admittedly one of the most depraved games I’ve ever come across. A strategy title with a point collection system based on pain and humiliation will probably turn away the majority of sensible folks. But if you can get past the subject matter of sadistically torturing enemies, you might be surprised to find a highly challenging and well balanced action-strategy game. If you’re comfortable with demented content and you enjoy a good challenge, Deception IV: Blood Ties may be the game for you.

The status of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes was mostly unknown leading up to a week or so before launch. But its existence has been well defined since then, it is clear that Ground Zeroes is just a prologue for the forthcoming full game Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. The biggest question here revolves around if Ground Zeroes is worth the $19.99 ($29.99 for Xbox One and PS4) price tag. Despite a few setbacks, it brings in some innovative mechanics, a re-playable main mission, and fun side activities, all of which combine together to make one hell of an experience. It may be a prologue, but it’s a damn good one.

FF X / X-2 HD Remaster offers a massive amount of content in a fully polished presentation that reminds us of how good RPGs are supposed to play. The updated graphics, character models and soundtrack, along with additional content previously exclusive to the international release, revives these ageing classics into one of the best current RPG releases out today.

Resident Evil 4 was a monumental achievement upon its release back in January 2005, and it is still one that video game connoisseurs appreciate today. What many of these connoisseurs forget is just how well the game holds up nine years later. Sure, it has frustrating elements that can throw you off your positive momentum, but the strong elements of the landmark release that was Resident Evil 4 still stand tall today. In all honesty, it just feels nice to play a great Resident Evil game, even if it is nine years old.

Yoshi’s New Island looks great, plays flawlessly, and is entertaining and challenging enough for any fan to enjoy—and ultimately, that’s all that matters. If you’re a fan, you’ll find what you’re looking for here, but those still waiting for the next great and unique Nintendo title will have to keep on waiting. Some of the pieces of the game feel poorly tacked-on, but at it’s core Yoshi’s New Island is a worthy sequel to a beloved series that has been out of gamer’s lives for too long.

Answering the question of whether Titanfall lives up to the incredible amount of hype and anticipation is something that’ll take a little bit more time. It’s fun, damned fun, but the lack of single-player campaign, customization, and matchmaking options come as a bit of a surprise. What amazed me most though is what is layered throughout - accessibility. Titanfall makes every player feel like they have a role to play. Even if you are just crushing bots underfoot, you feel like a badass in a giant walking tank every second of play - I just wish there was more of it.

If you’re looking to invest in the game and have a choice, leave your older generation system behind - this is the right way to enjoy the entire line of Skylanders Toys you or your kids have amassed. The added improvements in graphics and audio will certainly outweigh any minor annoyances the Xbox One version brings. Be warned: if you already own it on any other console besides the Nintendo 3DS, it might not be worth the duplicate toys that come along with the minor bump in audio and video fidelity. This is where Activision should be looking at releasing a next-gen version with previously unreleased characters to bolster their brand in the next-gen world.

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles is definite must-have for any Playstation 3 owner and/or fan of JRPGs. It’s a great value for the money and two great games with all the extras you could want. This is your something new and something old all in one and a game that once added to your collection you’re never going to want to be without. If you even think you want it, go out and get it.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 takes the familiar plot and characters that players first met nearly four years ago and rewards them by tying it all together into a respectful and conclusive payoff. While not a flawless game, with needlessly tedious segments and the occasional glitch, it remains an overall engaging and fun experience that will satisfy any fan of the original.

One Piece: Romance Dawn probably won’t be the worst anime based RPG you play, but it will certainly be one of the laziest designed. The combat system may be engaging enough for fans who are already familiar enough with the story to know what to expect, but for newcomers this game is a disservice to the fun of the series. Someday, when a better title takes its place, Romance Dawn will have a respectful position for where it all began. But for now, this is just a dud of a game in the box of a collectible import.

Appealing to both hardcore shooter fans as well as younger and more casual players, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is entertaining, accessible, and oozing with charm. And while it’s only launching with a handful of maps, the lower price point and promise of free content down the line softens the blow considerably.
