UnMetal puts a parody spin on the older Metal Gear games, while also being a competent mid-80s stealth title. Its reliance on its humour in both gameplay and writing will make it a chore for some, but a joy for others.

For all the story setup and interesting characters and dialogue (shoutout to the Spanish voiceovers, I appreciated that touch), Aeterna Noctis struggles under the might of its predecessors. Everything it does, while solid and enjoyable in places, doesn’t feel as polished or precise as those it’s influenced by, and the story itself doesn’t elevate the experience as much as I was hoping. Perhaps more time could have been focused on the idea of cycles, the feeling of living one’s life over and over, which could have helped to push it beyond just another decent Metroidvania. As good as it may be, it needed just that little something extra to really get it over the line.

In the aftermath of such an event as being locked out of your save file one has to take a look at the road travelled in a very particular light. There’s a lot to like and even love about The Last Stand: Aftermath. Its moment-to-moment treasure hunting and rogue-like systems are top-notch at pulling you in and keeping you playing. I especially love the mutation system and its run-altering effects that make each volunteer you send to die uniquely fun. Frankly though, it’s hard to recommend something that clearly needs more time. If the bugs can be flattened to the point where they don’t endanger the player experience then there is a really good time to be had here. However, it might be best to stay away from this infection, at least for the time being.

Conway: Disappearance at Dahlia View feels like a paperback mystery novel you might find at the back of the bookstore. It’s not exactly a hidden gem but it does contain the occasional glint of something special. Perfunctory writing drags down the tension and a limited range of puzzles and interactivity struggles to pull it all back together. Worse though, Conway’s brutish ways filled me with unease from the first snap of the camera, rather than filling me with the joy of a good detective story, I just felt like an intruder.
