Death’s Door may not have a cavernously deep combat system or a AAA blockbuster budget behind it, but it doesn’t need these things. It delivers a sharp and focused experience in an engaging world full of mystery – with memorable characters and a story that is concise and full of deeper meaning. There is a thoughtful joy to come from the sadness at the centre of its narrative, with a deeper message of hope and appreciation for what little time we have in this life. … which is not bad for a story about a rather ordinary crow.

Game Builder Garage is a simple and very accessible learning tool for budding bedroom developers to come to grips with the basic concepts, but it’s held back by a barebones feature set and rigid tutorials that suck the fun out of those first steps. Once you’ve suffered initiation and you’re comfortable to skirt its boundaries looking for openings to experimentation there’s some joy to be had, but it’s missing the longevity and community of something like Dreams to make it anything more than a curiosity.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is a very handsome remaster of a game that will no doubt hold a special place in certain people’s hearts. For those people, it’s a chance to revisit an old favourite with a great new look and enough new twists to keep things interesting. For everyone else, this offbeat, unforgiving and often bewildering platformer might seem like it should’ve stayed in the 80s. Jankenteam clearly has a love for the title though, and for just north of $25 there’s definite value for anyone who owned and loved a Master System back in the day.

Creating a grand interplanetary civilisation is one thing, but managing the needs and supplies of the subjects is tough work. Before We Leave makes logistics an easy, streamlined process through an intuitive UI and readability across its design. The fun lays in ironing out the kinks in your immense system and achieving a sustainable economy, all to overcome impending doom. While there is some underlying mundanity, the overwhelming joy and optimism the game extrudes from the player cannot be understated. And hey, if you grow tired of the system, you can always sabotage it from the inside to try and teach your Peeps to live free and naked.
