With its Champions League licence to add to all the others, FIFA 19’s presentation is more authentic than it’s ever been. Crowds still look a bit too regimented and player movement can still sometimes be slightly wonky if you really study it, but in terms of translating the sights and sounds of professional football, no other game comes close. The slightly less frantic gameplay might even convince a few PES players to change allegiance, although online play is still overly frenetic. FIFA 19 might not reinvent football games but it’s still a winner – and to most people, that’s all that really matters.

It could have been little more than an empty exercise in nostalgia for the thirtysomething crowd. Thankfully, Doom manages to blend in just enough 21st century tweaks to appeal to the kind of Modern Warfare-raised whippersnapper who thinks “shareware” is something you keep your picnic sandwiches in. Is it an essential purchase? Not unless you’re a twitch shooter fanatic, or an old DOSer looking to relive your early FPS memories given a modern day sheen. It’s an enjoyable shooter with a decent campaign and a turbo-charged but messy multiplayer mode, but one I suspect many will hold off buying until the price drops a little – and I wouldn’t blame them.

Get beyond the cliched story and The Evil Within 2’s open-world scares are tense and refreshing – even if the borrowed tropes don’t quite gel with the genre.

Forza Motorsport 7 boasts a ridiculous commitment to realism and graphical fidelity. Whether that’s enough to sell you on the Xbox One X will depend on just how seriously you take your virtual racing. For proper petrolheads, this is pretty much gaming nirvana – and even if you don’t know the difference between a prop shaft and a parking brake, the beginner-friendly driving assists are a welcome helping hand to get you behind the wheel. There are a few irks, like an over-reliance on loot crates to expand your car collection, but these the exception, rather than the rule. Serious sim fans will probably find a bit more customisation with Project Cars 2, but for sheer fun factor, Forza wins out. Fun is, after all, what makes the Motorsport games a thrill – rather than a true approximation of what life behind the wheel might be like. There’s probably a reason why Lewis Hamilton looks miserable half the time, and we’d rather not find out why for ourselves. Unless someone’s gonna pay us an extraordinary sum to veg out in front of our Xbox, anyway.

If you can live with its lack of polish and occasional bugs, PCARS2 is as good a racing game as you’ll ever play

Like last year there’s so much to recommend about PES 2018 but it comes with significant caveats. Anyone buying it does so in the knowledge that it won’t be like playing an interactive version of Super Sunday and if you’re not prepared to at least edit the team names it’s hard to recommend. Even the most hardcore football hipster will only get so much out of playing as Eredivisie and Ligue 1 teams. If you’re willing to accept its flaws, on the pitch PES is a football game with real depth, that recreates the patterns of play you see on real pitches every Saturday afternoon more closely than ever before. It rewards teamwork, vision and patience rather than pushing people towards individual skill, although the most talented players can still do damage on their own. That makes its offline options more appealing than they might otherwise be but with its online mode still a frustrating experience you might find yourself craving new challenges before next season starts. Anyone unconvinced by PES before won’t find anything new here to tempt them now but those who had submitted to its charms won’t be disappointed.
