While purely online games like this often lack for content in their early days, Ubisoft is getting better and better at supporting its titles post-launch and it’s taking the right approach to future DLC here. Free maps, paid cosmetics, and extra operatives for cash or a big bundle or Renown. It’s reassuring that R6:S has a future planned but let’s hope players get more than the same objectives in shiny new packaging. Still, when you launch a coordinated pincer attack or make a heroic last stand, R6:S is a visceral, clever and hugely satisfying game. It innovates, while at the same time stripping back so much of the feature-creep of its competitors. You can almost rappel up the learning curve it’s so hardcore but that really is part of the Rainbow Six appeal. There’s no fat, no single player campaign, no forgiveness and no other shooter quite like it around at the moment.

Trying to be all things to all people is often problematic, but a game of this type probably has very little option. How else do you appeal to the greatest number of people? Reduce the price and just sell track packs, allowing players to decide which direction they want to go? Perhaps, but some of the most enjoyable tracks to play on GH games have come from unexpected places. Indeed, Katy Perry’s ‘Waking Up In Vegas’ is far more fun to play than much of the angsty white-boy rock to be found here. While Rock Band‘s return feels like a remastered special edition, GH should be commended for trying something new. In hardware terms it’s entirely successful and while it means buying new guitars, the changes are a resounding success. While we have some reservations about the songs chosen by Freestyle Games to appear on Guitar Hero Live, its GHTV mode should provide the longevity that normally only DLC can provide, especially if new songs are added as often as promised. Considering that’s all free, it makes the initial price tag easier to swallow, and the lack of any meaningful local multiplayer a little less important.

Whether a rushed release is to blame or not, WRC 5 doesn’t pay attention to the details that rally fans value most: great handling, immersive weather and co-drivers that don’t make you want to end it all a la Thelma and Louise. Its real-world sportsmen and officially licensed teams are smokescreens that do little to disguise a middle of the road racing game with some unforgivable bugs. If you’re determined to follow in the footsteps of your rally heroes by taking on miniature approximations of this year’s stages, then I’d suggest you wait until the game comes down in price. If you really can’t wait to get your teeth stuck into handbrake turns at 60mph, then it’s almost impossible to recommend this over DiRT Rally, which exceeds it in almost every regard.

Much like the real thing, then, PES 2016 is a game of two halves. Thanks to its perennial licensing issues and newfound defensive frailties, it doesn’t quite deliver the entire package – FIFA 16 is a better all-rounder. What it does do is capture the spirit of the beautiful game. Football, at its very core, is about impossible dreams and moments of magic, and PES quite rightly places that spectacle above all else.

Those allergic to stats will likely still find there’s a little too much time spent in menus weighing up the +12 damage of one sword with the +15% critical chance of another, and there are issues with the AI’s pathfinding that means your horse seems to get stuck behind just about anything and everything all the flaming time, but these are minor flaws in a game that is otherwise something of a fantasy masterpiece. Only the most RPG-phobic should avoid it – everyone else will find The Witcher 3 to be one of the finest games of recent memory.

After all this time, the Mortal Kombat games are just as addictive as ever, and MK-X is the best there is. The much improved gameplay, combined with better graphics, more variance and a well developed online component make this the ultimate 2D fighting gorefest. Netherrealm has clearly worked hard to keep everything that people have loved from the previous editions, whilst adding on even more opportunities to break your opponent apart in different and creative ways. The interactive cut scenes aren’t great and, like all fighting games, combat can get repetitive after time. Still, MK-X offers some of the violently addictive fun I’ve had in a long time.
